Legal Eagle Wedding Watch: October 1, 2006

We’re still a little behind here at Legal Eagle Wedding Watch, but we’re working diligently to catch up. This post reviews and rates couples featured in the New York Times weddings page on October 1, 2006.
The weekend of September 30-October 1 was not a big one for lawyer weddings. But we did find three couples worthy of review:

1. Lori Alvino, Matthew McGill

2. Carrie Girgenti, Gregory Sheps

3. Eunice Hong, Gerald Neugebauer III

1. Lori Alvino, Matthew McGill
Résumé score: 9.5. Readers of Underneath Their Robes are quite familiar with this dazzling couple (blogged about here and here). Lori Alvino — soon to be Lori Alvino McGill — is a former Supreme Court clerk, for Justice Ginsburg. ‘Nuff said. (For the record, she went to Columbia for college and law school.) Matt is an associate at uber-prestigious Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, in Washington, DC (where we’ll be speaking at the attorney luncheon tomorrow, btw). He went to Dartmouth for college (magna) and Stanford for law school, clerked for two federal judges, and was a Bristow Fellow in the Solicitor General’s office. Wow! (So where’s the missing 0.5? It’s because Matt McGill is not among the Elect.)
Family score: 9.1. Her father is a partner in the New York office of McDermott Will & Emery — very nice. His father is also a lawyer, a partner in Clifton Budd & DeMaria (which gets only the indefinite article from the Times, “a New York law firm”; but hey, they do have 20+ lawyers).
Balance score: 8.9. Matthew McGill’s impressive educational and professional credentials, including that incredibly prestigious Bristow Fellowship, help to close the yawning gap that typically exists between members of the Elect and the Great Unwashed.
Beauty score: 9.2. Yes, this score is very high. But Lori Alvino is a knock-out, and Matt McGill is pretty good-looking too. We base our score not on the picture in the Times, but on the superior photograph we have in our possession (above right). In addition, we have met Lori in person — on a sidewalk in Old Town Alexandria, on St. Patrick’s Day 2006 — and can confirm that she is just as gorgeous in person.
Overall score: 9.18.
Additional comments: Sigh. It’s no fun to have “Couple of the Month” decided before the month is only halfway through.
2. Carrie Girgenti, Gregory Sheps
Résumé score: 8.7. She’s an associate in the IP and tech department of Latham & Watkins’s New York office. Nice work, Carrie. He’s the director of sponsorship development at the Tribeca Film Festival, which is a neat job — he probably gets to meet lots of celebs (and spend quality time with Robert DeNiro; spending quality time with Jane Rosenthal, not so fun). She went to U. Penn and Fordham Law; he went to SUNY Albany.
Family score: 8.6. The couple’s score is kept up by Carrie’s dad. He’s the chairman and CEO of Ogilvy Healthworld, a unit of WPP Group, the British advertising giant. He’s also the vice chairman of the board of the prostate health and research center at Mount Sinai — clearly he’s done well for himself (and his prostate). Gregory’s mother is a sales rep with Isadora & Mizrahi (Issac?), a company that represents giftware and home decor manufacturers. His father retired as a sales rep for Department 56, a giftware importer.
Beauty score: 8.7. Cute; nice smiles. Her tresses are very Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Balance score: 8.2. Hard to compare across professions, but Carrie seems to have the definite edge over her husband. She seems to be more high-powered, she has a more high-powered dad, and she’s also younger than Greg (33 to 37).
Overall score: 8.55. Although lower than Lori and Matt’s score, it should be kept in mind that an 8.55 is still perfectly respectable.
3. Eunice Hong, Gerald Neugebauer III
Résumé score: 8.7. The couple met at Dickinson College (from which he graduated summa). Eunice is an interior desinger in New York, with a master’s degree from Pratt. Gerald did well for himself: NYU Law (cum laude), followed by Cleary Gottlieb.
Family score: –. Occupations unmentioned for any of the parents. How strange! Are they all colleagues of Valerie Plame?
Beauty score: 8.8. Only Eunice is pictured. She possesses the doll-like beauty of Devon Aoki.
Balance score: 8.4. Hard to say given the limited information; this represents our gut feeling.
Overall score: 8.63.
THIS WEEK’S WINNING COUPLE: That wasn’t terribly interesting, was it? But we have to call ’em as we see ’em; we won’t engage in grade inflation to generate artificial suspense. The winners this week, in a total blowout: Lori Alvino and Matthew McGill. Congrats!
