Several years ago, there was a Texas chain (they had two stores in Austin, and I think stores in other cities) called "Earful of Books" that sold and rented books-on-tape and books-on-CD.

My recollection is that the chain dissolved, not strictly for market reasons, but because there were some odd financial dealings.

The chain did predate the current download market, though, so I'm not sure how that would change things today.
