Programming Note: Legal Writing Navel-Gazing Fiesta!
We’re up in New York right now for a symposium on legal writing at New York Law School. Topics to be covered include both legal academic writing, for student-run law reviews, as well as writing about legal affairs for a lay audience (e.g., through legal journalism and blogging).
The comfortable, well-lit classroom that we’re in right now has excellent wireless internet access. So we will be blogging, both about the conference and non-conference subjects, throughout the day.
P.S. We think this conference will be very worthwhile. We’re only applying the “Dubious Conferences” tag because we’re quite proud of it, and don’t get to use it enough.

So, is NYLS the worst law school on the east coast or does that honor go to UDC?
That's a pot shot. Do you really think the marquee names speaking at the symposium would speak at NYLS if it were the worst law school? The fact that these people are participating is enough proof that it doesn't deserve to be dissed. NYLS has a lot going for it and just might be the best kept secret in legal education in NY -- it just happens to be overshadowed by its neighbors, NYU and Columbia.
Anon. 10:56,
I dunno. My best friend graduated from NYLS last year (night program, too). #4 in her class; and she got offers from, among others, Paul Weiss, Cleary, and White & Case. I graduated (respectably) from Michigan Law and didn't get offers from any of those esteemed firms.
Anecdotally, at least, I'd say they're not so shabby if their placement (albeit at the top) looks like that...
"[NYLS] just might be the best kept secret in legal education in NY -- it just happens to be overshadowed by its neighbors, NYU and Columbia."
As well as a dozen other metro NY schools, most of which are better than that toilet.
The fact they paid some attention hungry "pundits" to show up for a conference means squat.
3L evening at NYLS. BigLaw summer job coming up, 15th in class. I got lucky. You don't make it in the top 10%, you get NO offers. The top 10% get all the interviews, period. I like the faculty. The administration is horrible. If I could have gone to a better school I would have because the evening students are treated as redheaded stepchildren in comparison to day students.
That being said, NYLS has some fantastic faculty for the major doctrinal courses. For example, Nadine Strossen president of the ACLU teaches Con Law civil liberties?!? She was intense, but it was a great class. She got Scalia to come and address our Law Review’s 50th Anniversary Banquet last year. How many of you ivy leaguers have shaken a SC Justice’s hand over cocktails? See http://www.nyls.edu/pages/5382.asp
It is a terribly underrated school – not reflected in its third priciest tuition and third largest endowment in the country, but the education has been outstanding. After all, let's not forget that we're all studying for the same bar exam...
I believe you have to demonstrate a drug addiction during the admissions process. NYLS is for rich drug addicts who can't get into real schools.
