Skaddenfreude: The Updated List of Shame

100 dollar bill Above the Law Above the Law law firm salary legal blog legal tabloid Above the Law.JPGBack by popular demand: the LIST OF SHAME.

Since the last publication of the list, one week ago, there have been some changes. Baker Botts has matched market in New York, so they are kinda-sorta off the list -- "kinda-sorta" because we don't think they've raised in other offices, including their Texas offices.

(Some of you have bitched about that, in poesy as well as prose.)

Thelen Reid is off the list, as of today. They were so eager to be removed from the LIST OF SHAME that they issued a press release touting their associate pay raises.

So here's the latest list. If you see inaccuracies, please email us (with supporting documentation). Thanks.

40. Baker Botts
43. Baker & McKenzie
50. Fulbright & Jaworski
58. Vinson & Elkins
70. Hunton & Williams
75. Nixon Peabody
77. Bryan Cave
82. Reed Smith
83. Dorsey & Whitney
86. McGuireWoods
90. Baker & Hostetler
91. Thelen Reid
92. Mintz Levin
95. Dickstein Shapiro
98. Kelley Drye
100. Seyfarth Shaw

TEXAS should be spelled TTTEXAS. Thanks for nothing.

Anyone have PPP info for these firms? It would be interesting to see how many firms with lower PPP have matched.

Besides Kelley Drye, are any of these NY-based firms?

Baker Botts raised in DC as well.

"Besides Kelley Drye, are any of these NY-based firms?"

Nixon Peabody is NY-based. The question is, with about 5 offices in NY state, where in NY are they based? In any event, they haven't matched in Manhattan and do not come close to even touching the old $145K standard in their other NY offices.

I always thought of Nixon Peabody as a Rochester-based firm. To clarify, I did mean NYC-based.

Actually, Nixon is technically based in Boston.

Baker Botts should have an asterisk, rather than a cross-out, being as they haven't raised in the majority of their offices.

These salary analysis is a lot more complex than matched or not matched. BB did not raise in the majority of their offices. Some firms compressed their senior associate salaries. More detailed analysis is needed!

Good for Thelen. I'm really curious to see what the addition of Brown Raysman does to help their Vault ranking. They're a formidable firm.

Curtis, Mallet in NYC raised effective March 1. Announced in person last week.

Does Greenberg Traurig need to be added to the "sorta" list of shame? They've raised in New York, but I don't think they have anywhere else. Anyone know?

Williams & Connolly should also make the list of shame. Although their salaries are par with other DC offices, they have not raised their base -- and given the fact that they don't pay bonuses, they are far under market.

A lot of firms are cheap when you look at senior associate compression. Let's look into this.

Can we stick with a methodology of determining the top 100 firms or produce charts of both? I would suggest we use the AMLAW 100 list.

Kelley Drye just matched "local markets."

I think AmLaw 100 is better and more objective than the Vault list.

Why does BB get a strike-thru?? Of course Fulbright and VE are gonna match in DC and NYC, but we need to keep pushing for Texas!!

I like the "*" idea versus a strike-thru.

avatar
24 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, February 20, 2007 6:38 PM

We need a "*" system for firms that 1) did not match in all markets they are in, 2) did not apply the increase to all associates, or 3) did not match up the chain for senior associates.

Kelley Drye matched "local markets" meaning just in NY?

avatar
27 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, February 20, 2007 8:50 PM

There was a reference to increases in "all offices" in the e-mail. KDW's offices are NY-NJ-CT-DC-Tyson's-Chicago, so obvs. no relevance to West Coast.

ok McGuire Woods. you are on the friggin clock, and have been for some time. What is going on in DC / Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Chicago, NYC????

Are you a national big boy or just a little lost bully from Richmond who needs to find his way home? Time to come to the party!

For $190k a firm could hire three non top 10% Loyola grads. Surely three Loyola grads >= one top school grad.

Hunton & Williams just announced internally that it is matching NY at $160 and all other offices at $145 for first years.
