Wherein Shanetta Cutlar Laughs Her Ass Off At Her Detractors
As regular ATL readers well know, we’ve been offering wall-to-wall coverage of Shanetta Y. Cutlar. If you’re not familiar with her, Ms. Cutlar is the
nightmarish awesomely overachieving diva who oversees the Special Litigation Section (SPL), part of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
Shanetta Cutlar is a strong leader with a distinctive managerial style. She drives lawyers and staff away in droves sometimes rubs people the wrong way. But even if it’s lost on her underlings, we appreciate SYC’s deliciousness!
Some of you have wondered whether Chief Cutlar is aware of ATL’s coverage of her and, if so, what she thinks of it. We had heard through the grapevine that she is aware of this site and finds the attention amusing. Now we have more concrete confirmation.
At a recent meeting of the Section Chiefs of the Civil Rights Division, Shanetta Y. Cutlar whipped out a tiara. She then placed it on her head and proclaimed:
“I GUESS I’M A DIVA NOW!!!”
This is a clear reference to ATLs’ naming Cutlar our DOJ Diva of the Day — on two separate occasions.
We draw the following conclusions from this tiara incident:
1. Shanetta Cutlar is even more fabulous than we thought. The woman owns a tiara, for chrissakes. And she brings it to meetings of high-level DOJ officials.2. Shanetta Cutlar has a healthy, self-deprecating sense of humor. The commenters who defend her so earnestly on ATL, like “Life” — see this thread — need to relax. They should follow their idol’s lead, and just laugh it off.
3. Shanetta Cutlar is completely confident in her ability to keep her post. She’s unfazed by the attention she has received, and she’s unfraid of, say, congressional investigations of SPL. She knows she’s not going anywhere.
WE LOVE YOU SHANETTA!!!
P.S. Where did SYC get the tiara? On a totally random note, our cousin-in-law is a leading maker of wedding tiaras.

You have to be joking. She literally whipped out a tiara and embraced her bitchiness in a room full of peers? They must have been horrified! The other things she's done I could sort of dismiss as slightly exaggerated based on the perceptions of the writer (i.e., docket review is stressful but getting reviewed is always stressful), but putting on a tiara in a room full of colleagues? That's not really something two rational people could perceive differently. She either has a very broken sense of humor or some mental health issues.
Clearly it was tongue in cheek. The message she send to her fellow chiefs was: "I don't care about what some silly legal gossip site writes about me. This is laughable."
Thanks for the tiara referral; I'm looking for a place to buy one for my wedding and hope that I'll be featured in an upcoming legal wedding review, wearing a Christina Garcia creation!
Maybe the gossip is laughable, but not the federal whistleblower complaint filed by Clevinger.
Q: How come this site stays neutral in Charneygate, but not in Shanettagate?
Is it just me, or is it kind of slapping one's tipsters in the face to come down as "loving Shanetta," however tongue-in-cheek?
I mean, if I was willing to risk my job merely to send David Lat an anonymous email detailing her nightmarish behavior, I think it would grate on me to have him turn around and make like all his tipsters are a bunch of whiners, and that she's a diva who doesn't care how she treats her staff.
You know? It's kind of biting the hand that feeds you tip-wise. I don't want to be the one to send you gossip, only to have it mocked as the whining of a pathetic loser.
So, a senior official of the Civil Rights Division leaked what happened at a Section Chief's meeting? Wow. Could this be some well placed damage control?
This chick is "strong in her spot" and could care less. I wish she would hire me.
I keep trying. Look me up, SC! You are my kind of woman. Hahaha!
It seems like it is time to move on from this and let Ty fight it out in the courts.
Her tiara looks like a hairnet. Is this... RACIST???
"Strong in her spot?
I agree. To a point. The current politicals are fine with the mess over at SPL. Nothing much happens in her shop and the career staff takes the blame.
But the new Congress may have something to say. And, if not, this "unusual" Administration will not last forever.
Anonymous 8:27 and 8:41 are unclear on the concept of irony.
8:35 AM: Agreed. But really it doesn't matter whether Lat "loves" (or claims to love) SYC.
What matters is that the FACTS about her are getting out. That's probably all that Lat's tipsters care about: that the legal world knows about how horrible SYC is.
Clearly the facts about SYC are getting out. Who cares that they're accompanied with a heavy dose of irony?
I think she is too insecure to make fun of herself in front of her peers this way.
I think there is some insecurity in all of us, yet we still find time to laugh at ourselves. Play nice 11:08, she hasn't killed your first born.
