Get NYU

In ATL’s March Madness, NYU currently enjoys a sizable lead over their uptown competition at Columbia. So they probably don’t need the electoral boost that might result from this delightful video, produced as part of the annual NYU Law Revue:

Our observations:

1. It’s all in the casting: “Columbia” is a brilliant choice. She’s the twenty-something, female embodiment of John Hodgman. If the whole “law” thing doesn’t work out for her, she should look into acting.

2. “Harvard” and “Yale” are super-cute!!! Of course, we’re assuming that in real life they are NYU law students (and perhaps future NYU law hotties).

3. The video includes a photographic cameo by one-half of FELDSUK. Awesome! (And we love how NYU has brilliantly spun Professor Noah Feldman’s high-profile defection to Harvard.)

Congratulations to the NYU Law crew that put together such an excellent video. Nice work, guys!

P.S. Did they get any help from their brilliant colleagues at NYU’s famous film school?

Update: The answer to that question is no. A tipster tells us that the creator of the video is a mere law student, who produced this video without film school help. This source also adds:

The ad makes fun of NYU as well: we have no waitlist, and can’t use Macs for exams. The video turns against NYU.

not an excellent video, just a series of platitudes. the acting is stilted and the background music too loud. i hope NYU's film school has nothing to do with it.

How was that video good? Here's a thought: NYU students, get the fuck over yourselves. You're just another law school--you're not hip or cool or alternative because your school is downtown and is adjacent to a bunch of crappy bars.

amen. the people who were actually cool in that neighborhood have all either left or hate NYU (not just the law school, of course) for ruining it. seriously.

If you watch closely, you'll see that the video actually makes fun of NYU as well. We don't have waitlists, and can't use Macs for exams. The actress playing "Mac" actually cannot use a Mac. It's ironic.

It's not just Columbia bashing.

1. That video is hilarious.

2. It's true that NYU Law being downtown doesn't make us cooler; it just means we have more fun. Being interesting people with social lives is what makes us cooler.

3. There's another video following that's even better. Keep it up.

Boo hoo I had to NYU instead of Columbia.

I go to NYU (and I got into the place uptown) and I never hear anyone talking about how we're as good as Columbia. Whenever the subject comes up the talk is always about how we're BETTER than Columbia.

avatar
36 Posted by 3L | Permalink Monday, April 2, 2007 1:41 PM

I got into both Columbia and NYU. I chose NYU for a variety of personal reasons and I am very happy here. I'm sure I'd have been happy at Columbia as well. But I know a lot of NYU kids who got into Columbia (as well as Columbia students who got into NYU). The rivalry is rather silly (except of course for Dean's Cup, which is just good fun), since most students are happy with their choice of law school.

Also, the video was indeed done by a 3L, without any outside assistance.

I go to NYU law school, and am embarrassed to admit that we do in fact have this complex about Columbia. Most people here would reluctantly admit that the only reason they're going here is because they didn't get accepted to Columbia. And I'm sure that Columbia is filled with people who didn't get into Harvard. Why else would they go there, and why else would we go to NYU?

I think almost everyone at NYU got into CLS and everyone at CLS got into NYU, assuming they applied to both schools. And I've never heard anyone say NYU is as good as CLS. We only say we're better.

The rivalry is really about attracting students and profs (and we're making a killing stealing CLS profs). For students, its all light hearted. For hiring committees and admissions officers, its deadly serious. In my case, they even offered me identical scholarship packages.

avatar
51 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 2, 2007 5:36 PM

Also, in case anyone doesn't know, CLS and NYU schedule their admitted student days over one weekend, and the admissions officers and students are pretty focused on selling prospective students on CLS over NYU or NYU over CLS.

Those of you making negative comments about the cast members' looks are disgusting and should seriously be ashamed of yourselves. Say what you want about the video itself, but making gross remarks about the individuals in it is not cool at all. They are all really cool, talented people, who put on an awesome show (in addition to being smart enough to get into NYu Law). Grow up, and stop being ugly to people who do not deserve that kind of treatment simply for having their hard work recognized.

avatar
53 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 2, 2007 7:59 PM

The reason there is such a rivalry between NYU and Columbia is that they are both in NY and have so many cross-admits. NYU people dislike Columbia b/c they are worried people assume its better just because its an ivy and resent having less layman prestige.

Columbia students resent NYU people b/c they are insecure tools who felt the need to sacrifice QOL to go to an ivy. They pretend that all cross-admits go to Columbia so they feel smarter.

NYU students are much better than Columbia students.

Not better law students mind you.

Just better people.

I got into both and chose Columbia. I didn't know if I'd want a business degree or some other degree to go along with my JD and Columbia has slightly better "name recognition." The truth is, CLS has been on top for decades, whereas NYU has risen dramatically in recent years. So the name value's a little smidgen better.

It also places more clerkships.

That said, I know TONS of people who got into both and chose NYU so they could live downtown.
