Ty Clevenger Blows the Whistle Once Again

start snitching Above the Law blog.JPGWe are favorably disposed towards former Justice Department lawyer Ty Clevenger. We owe him a debt of gratitude, since he’s the person who first told us about Shanetta Cutlar — the crazy-ass colorful chief of the DOJ’s Special Litigation Section, and one of our favorite people to write about here at ATL.

Now Ty Clevenger is making waves once again — and some of you aren’t sure if it’s all that favorable. Several of you emailed us about his latest exploits. This message is representative:

Ty Clevenger is in the news again, this time making accusations about the politicization of the hiring process at the DOJ. See here and here.

Between his law school activities, Shanetta Cutlar, and this, he’s beginning to look like a little tattletale to me….

Tattletale? Or, more charitably, a person of great honesty and integrity (perhaps too much for his own good)? Or, more cynically, a shameless seeker of attention?

We don’t know Clevenger personally, so we won’t opine. But the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Many great whisteblowers throughout history have had mixed motivations — such as a desire for the truth to come to light, and a desire for personal fame and/or fortune.

But we can say this. If we ever hang out with Ty Clevenger, we sure as hell won’t jaywalk with him by our side. Or try to sneak through the express lane at the supermarket with more than 15 items.

I know Ty from law school. I would describe him as a person with a very robust sense of justice and endless energy to redress any breaches thereof.

I'm not sure how robust his sense of justice is, since he apparently agreed to delete the political reference from his resume and resubmit it in order to get the job. Sounds more like a robust sense of self-promotion, to me.

"Or try to sneak through the express lane at the supermarket with more than 15 items."

Your supermarket's express lane has a 15 item limit? Damn, mine only has a 10 item limit.

This weasel has a robust sense of kissing the asses of the new Democratic Congress that he hopes will still be in place when a new Democratic Administration considers him for an appointment in 2009. He thinks that making allegations against the current Administration, no matter how ludicrous, will give him points with the Dems that he can cash in, later.

I don't think this genius has thought his cunning plan all the way through, though. There are long memories in DC, and it's a very small town.

(BTW, Stanford? Figures.)

Was in law school with Ty. Am at the opposite end of the spectrum from him politically.

Ty can be a pain in the butt, but he's a genuinely good guy. Highly scrupulous and dogged in his causes. Calling him a weasel is wildly off the mark. This impulse may be self-damaging in the long run, but it comes from the exact *opposite* impulse to a weasel's.

I know Ty, I worked with Ty. He might be a screaming right wing idealogue-- with a hint of repression and self loathing thrown in-- but he's not a shameless attention seeker. He's actually a very kind and decent, if politically misguided, soul. Now SYC is a different story... Oh the tales I could tell... This blog only scratches the surface.
