Nationwide Pay Raise Watch: Baker & McKenzie
Remember that cute little bar graph, prepared by some disgruntled people in the Washington office of Baker & McKenzie? It looks like it worked.
A source at the firm reports that the firm just raised associate salaries. An associates' meeting was held earlier today. We haven't seen the memo yet, but here are the numbers (emphasis added):
Old pay scale:145/155/170/190/210/220/230/240
New pay scale (retroactive to 7/1):
160/170/190/210/230/250/265/280
Also, from a meeting earlier in the week, in which the upcoming recruiting season was discussed:
"The hiring partner made a comment about the bar chart posted on the web, mentioned that he was evaluating the situation, and mentioned AboveTheLaw by name. Then today we got the raise news."
Update: We now have the Baker & McKenzie - DC memo. We've posted it after the jump.

why does everyone want to be first?
Does this apply in all B-Mac offices or just in D.C.?
I guess demonstratives are important, after all.
Can someone make some Atlanta graphs?
Lat strikes again!
It didn't take long for the WGWAG thread to get locked.
Thank you Lat. Now how about posting that wonderful little graphic from your NY Observer article plotting associate salaries versus PPP. It was almost as stark as the Baker chart-o-shame.
4:02, is that what happened to the Feldsuk thread? I don't miss first and wgwag, but it would be kind of a shame to the regular ATL readers if we can't even continue an intelligent discussion due to a policy change. Lat, I love ATL and don't like it when people pick on you, Merck, etc., but has there been a formal policy change or have you just decided to delete first posts and wgwags when you get the chance due to much complaining by your readers? If so, can you explain the new policy? If there was a post on this, I apologize for missing it. Thanks.
Hey, why did you lock the Feldsuk comments?
Third years at 190? Isn't that about 5k above market?
The Feldsuk comments are open.
Hunton, McGuire and Troutman -- where are you???
So now Greenberg Traurig is the only respectable firm left at $145k?
"Old pay scale:
145/155/170/190/210/220/230/240
New pay scale (retroactive to 7/1):
160/170/190/210/230/250/265/280"
Firm raise memos should more like that than the usualy propaganda they put out.
Yes, third-year salaries are higher than any other firm we've seen, no? What about the higher levels?
Quo Vadis Hartford?
When will you raise salaries?
Nixon Peabody is still at 145K!!!
What gives?

4:30:
Yes, 3rd yr salaries elsewhere are 185K
Where the hell is Williams & Connolly?
Has Alston & Bird raised in D.C.?
I'm pretty sure they haven't. Only Atlanta-based firm that has raised in DC is King and Spalding. The rest are cheap, cheap firms.
4:39 -- where indeed, talk about holding out...
DC Vault List of Shame (still at $145,000)
17. Williams & Connolly ($165k no bonus)
59. Alston & Bird
64. Holland & Knight
70. Hunton & Williams
71. Patton Boggs
74. Kirkpatrick Lockhart
75. Nixon Peabody
77. Bryan Cave
86. McGuire Woods
93. Kilpatrick Stockton
96. Venable
It pains me greatly to read these threads while working at Howrey.
Lat, could you please post that chart again? And hi-light the continuing offenders. Uh, pretty, pretty, please.
Does anyone have any idea when the Gibson partners or comp committee is next scheduled to meet? I know they make all decisions "as a firm," but I'm curious how long we might have to wait to hear they raised clerkship bonuses?
OK, those guys at B&M are making $5k more than I am. I'm putting in my resume, right now! Third years, rise up! This injustice will not stand!
5:18, you forgot Greenberg Traurig. (see 4:25)
Thanks 5:18

I second the Atlanta chart. The only quuestion is, should it emphasize the fact that every other noteworthy market in the country is outpaying Atlanta by $15 or $30k or that all the "Atlanta based" firms are being outpayed in their own market?
Both equally shameful. Make it two charts!!!
Atlanta open thread.... Atlanta open thread.... let the bloodbath begin!
In all honesty, I'm curious to hear from the law student demographic and to get their take on the vast pay disparity in place here in Atlanta. Surely none with a brain and no family or in-laws in the Peach State is even dreaming of coming here.
Atlanta firms are looking soooooo weak. It's shameful. Why would any law student go there? I don't get it.
Compare Atlanta's mid- and upper- level associates with the other cities!
An open thread needs to be done on the Atlanta firms that haven't raised their salaries in DC (i.e., Alston, Troutman, Kilpatrick and Sutherland).
I second 9:55's motion for the thread. Atlanta-based firms are the last domino to fall in DC and it needs to be addressed. Firms based in every other major or semi-major legal market have answered the call in DC. Why haven't Atlanta firms?
What about Phoenix? Most firms in the top of the Phoenix market are still in the $120-125k range. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the country, and should be on par with with the other secondary markets.
large has nothing to do with it. it is all about cost of living.
I doubt there is a secondary legal market in the country with a higher cost of living than Phoenix.
You summer associates better enjoy the cash now, because you are going to be working non-stop for 7 to 10 years (likely selling your soul in the process).
NY to 190!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
