Nationwide Pay Raise Watch: Locke Liddell Has Raised
The rumor is true. Locke Liddell & Sapp has raised salaries for first- and second-year associates. As noted by a commenter, “Now that they have Harriet Miers back, Locke Liddell’s future is blindingly bright.”
The news was reported in the Texas Lawyer. We’ve also gotten a copy of the email, sent out this afternoon by managing partner Jerry Clements (who actually isn’t a 300-pound, cigar-smoking Texan male, replete with handlebar moustache, but a rather attractive woman).
You can check out her email, plus a photo, after the jump.
As for Baker Botts in Texas, still no word, as of the time of this post. If you hear anything, please email us. Thanks.

Subject: Attorney Compensation
As communicated earlier, Locke Liddell & Sapp management has been studying the possibility of increasing associate salaries. It is always our intent to remain a competitive force in the marketplace, and to attract and keep top talent. Locke Liddell is increasing associate salaries in Texas and Washington, D.C., effective August 1, 2007. Base salaries will be $160,000 for first year associates and $170,000 for second year associates. We are still working on details of the compensation structure for the other associate classes, but we are committed to remain competitive.
We will keep you apprised of decisions as they are made. Again, thank you for all the work you do for Locke Liddell and for our clients.

First y'all! YEE HAW!!!
FULBRIGHT -- its your turn
6:54(1)- You beat me across the line. Congrats.
Gotta love the "soft focus" in Jerry Clement's picture.
In the Baker Botts thread, someone said that the Locke Liddell and Lord Bissell merger was about to blow up, is there any truth to that? Can anyone provide any insight?
Fulbright, fulbright, fulbright
Where is Akin Gump in all this? They are the biggest of the big firms in Texas and haven't moved yet.
Akin Gump . . . biggest in TX?? Chambers lists FJ at 985 attorneys and AG with 950 attorneys. Collateral issue though.
7:36: AG website claims 900 attorneys; FJ website claims "nearly 1000"
but who is counting??
Who cares who is bigger...when will either AG or FJ match market???
people can retire on $160k in texas
985? 950? Jones Day claims over 2200. When are they going to raise?
before this round of raises, and currently, fulbright was paying 135 to start, while AG was (i think) at 140 like BB
Ok, NY better raise or my ass is going back home to Texas.
There is no soft lighting involved. Jerry really is that pretty.
Are you kidding me? Locke Liddell? A regional firm is paying close to what Biglaw associates are making in important cities? It's like a Single A baseball player earning a major league salary.
Everytime I see Harriet Miers, I can't help but think of Emperor Palpatine
Forget NY. Do you think there's any chance that Philly (i.e., Dechert, MLB) will raise as well? I mean they know they're not on the same level as NYC but they might match Texas.
I second that for Phoenix.
NYC to 190! C'mon Sidley! C'mon Skadden! C'mon S&C! Do it for ABC!

Harriet Miers: I'd hit it.
Any chance we could have a "report comment" button, and when we click it the comment disappears from our view? That would be much, much better than what we've got now.
Se me hace que los bufetes de Texas no deberian de sentir la misma presion que sienten los bufetes ubicados en Nueva York o California porque los bufetes alli no son bufetes "nacionales," y por eso, no se tienen comparar con el resto del mercado legal.

8:23, if you don't like the comments, don't read them.
Or did the posting expressing sexual interest in Harriet Miers gross you out too much?
Philly better match, but they won't. Dechert and MLB are market matchers, not market movers. They won't raise because there is no firm in Philly to raise first. Akin and DLA have offices there, but they pay less than Dechert and MLB in Philly, or maybe the same.
Also, compression is rampant in Philly, especially at lower tier firms. For example, 5th years at Cozen O'Connor make $135k, which is $10k less than 1st years at Dechert, MLB and Pepper.
I just want to thank whatever force of nature caused salaries to increase to $160k in TX. At my current investment rate, I will have $900k in the bank by the time I reach my low to mid-30s and will be living in one of the cheapest cities on earth. I may just retire instead of scrambling to find an in-house gig.

so come august 1, a 2nd year associate will be making more than a 5th year associate at LLS because they can't figure out the commensation system??
10:10 - "commensation" = compensation? I hope you bill better than you spell.
Indict that troll!
