Summer Fashion Poll: The Ladies’ Turn

Yesterday we promised a summer fashion poll for the ladies.
Summertime attire is particularly hard for women, because we have to balance the hot temperatures outside with the often frigid indoor environments necessitated by the (entirely correct, we think) male aversion to short-sleeved dress shirts.
Here you go, girls:

Anyone notice that Carney's "we're away on vacation" posting was removed? Probably a good move on ATL's part. Trying to get folks to click on ads is pretty hard when the guest poster tells everyone he's out of the office.
Yep. I was wondering where that had gone. Shamateurism.
Spaghetti strap tank tops with nothing over them are ok for the following workplaces: the pool, a night club, a bar, a tv/movie set or catwalk, a golf course, a cab, and a street corner (with a possible few I forgot). I'm pretty sure a 'professional' woman (body or not) should never be caught wearing spaghetti strap tank tops in the office. Especially one that hopes to be taken seriously...
Whoa, relax 2:27. Can't pull it off, huh?
I'd like to see some more chicks in my office in those shirts, preferably paralegals.
2:33: Classy
I'll second that, 2:33.
mmmmm... paralegals!
Wasn't Katie Fernandez wearing one of these things when she showed up to GT's recruiting event for paralegals?
I think something like this is fine for a Friday: http://www.anntaylorloft.com/catalog/outfit.jsp?ensembleId=649&N=1200050&categoryId=248&pCategoryId=245&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_248¤tPageNo=2
That's a spaghetti strap tank top. It's business casual, IMHO. (The skirt in the picture wouldn't work, but I'm sure you could find some nice pants or a fancier white skirt that did the trick.)
Wait summertime attire is particularly hard on women? Are you kidding me? Yeah I really feel for you walking around in 95+ degree whether with bare legs, sandals (or flip-flops, which I see plenty of lady lawyers wearing in the office) and a tank-top while the most relief I can get is linen pants and a polo.
If the toughest thing you have to worry about clothes-wise is having a sweater in your office to deal with the AC, I'd say it's not particularly hard on you.
2:57 -- Women are absolutely justified in going barelegged in the summer when not in court, considering the misery of pantyhose we have long suffered.
Neither capris nor spaghetti straps are appropriate. Bare legs are okay so long as the shoes and skirt are professional. Hose must be worn in court.
2:54, that is a really cute top!
Geez, I'm 24 and have a pretty nice body but I would never wear capris or a tank top. I'm just a meager SA though - I walk the line.
Can we say "Bikini Fridays"??? Hotties only please.
3:14 - I agree with you on all counts. I generally wear stockings with skirts all the time, but I don't always wear knee-highs/trouser socks with pants. Depends.
I can't imagine wearing spaghetti straps in my office - it's freezing! And I agree that summer is far, far harder on dudes than on the ladies.
3:14 -- You're generally right, I think. But capris can be ok if done very carefully, unless you're in the most conservative of offices. I think this look would be ok for a Friday when you're not in court, for example:

I'll concede that longish capris are much less objectionable than spaghetti straps and other fashion faux pas.
those capris are cute, 3:36. but i think that's a "professional" look for marketing, or advertising, or some other non-stuffy non-legal profession; i wouldn't wear them to work. maybe if your office does a "jeans friday."
3:45: I think you might be able to pull off that type of outfit on a non-client day in a non-NYC office. Especially in California or Florida. In NYC, definitely full suit or nice skirt/blouse combo at most firms.
But, please, for the love of God, ladies--don't go the suit w/ bermuda shorts route. I don't know who came up with it but it's awful, and not fit for a law firm. the *long* capris are questionable as it is---and note emphasis on long: ankle, not kneecap---and per the cultural/geographical limitations mentioned by 3:52
I think we're seeing a coast-divide here: 3:36's outfit would be totally fine at a California firm on any day of the week (except when going to court).
Skirts and a nice top are also fine any day of the week (and at many firms, jeans are too).
But I don't think sleeveless or spaghetti straps are ok at the office. I usually wear them under a jacket or sweater, which I can take off as soon as it is time to meet friends for drinks after work.
Howrey’s First-Year Texas Associates Earn $160,000
By Anne K. McMillan
Texas Lawyer
Tuesday, July 3, 2007
Washington, D.C.-based Howrey has bumped its starting salaries for first-year associates up to $160,000, effective July 1, Houston managing partner Steve Cagle says. The 635-lawyer firm also is ramping up work on a new merit-based compensation plan that will replace the old lockstep system of providing raises.
“I really love the fact that people are going to be able to make the choice of their own career path,” Cagle says. He notes that the merit-based plan will provide associates with choices they’ve indicated they want — accommodating those who want to bill 2,400 hours per year and make partner as quickly as possible as well as those who want to bill 1,900 hours per year and have a life outside the firm.
In addition, Cagle says, the merit-based system will “place a lot of pressure on the partners in the firm. . . . [It] represents a significant commitment on the part of partnership to get more involved in associate development.”
Focus groups, including several to be held in the 60-lawyer Houston office, outside consultants and the firm’s powers that be are working out factors for the merit-based system, which likely will include criteria such as productivity, quality and entrepreneurship.
Cagle expects the system to be in place by the first of the year.
I wish it was warm enough here in Europe to consider such questions.
old ladies at baby showers in queens wear capris. the same set that still gets their hair frosted and nails done to match their purses.
Hello
It doesn't matter how enlightened your male colleagues may be, if you're a hottie and you're wearing a spaghetti-strap tank top, they're going to be staring at your tits.
Would any of you women in the majority marry me?
Let's be honest 6:01, even if you're not wearing the tank top, if you're a hottie, the men in the office are checking out your tits.
We can't wear dress pant suits! no pants whatsoever. A 5 person firm with 3 women ... in house in financial services/insurance field
I can't even believe the spaghetti strap issue is being debated. Nobody in my office (or any NYC office I know of) would wear spaghetti straps to work. It's pretty unprofessional. The capris can be okay, if you wear the ones that look like slacks. Not for me, but to each her own.
