Clerkship Bonus Watch: Kramer Levin

Kramer Levin Naftalis Frankel LLP logo Abovethelaw Above the Law blog.jpgFirms continue to raise their clerkship bonuses, although the pace of announcements seems to be slowing.

Here's the latest addition to the $50K/$70K Club:

"Kramer Levin increased its clerkship bonus to $50,000 for one year and $70,000 for two years. The info is on their NALP page."

Indeed it is. You can access the firm's form by running a search on this page.

And if you're looking for a continually updated compilation of clerkship bonus information, we refer you to this list, over at the Law Clerk Addict blog. Very helpful!

P.S. Random factoid about Kramer Levin: it's the former Biglaw home of the WSJ Law Blog's Peter Lattman, who practiced litigation there for two years in the 1990s.

Pathetic.

Not Kramer, but all the other so-called "top" firms who haven't matched the $50k clerkship bonus. Latham, Shearman, Gibson, etc. But Latham is the most glaring.

When is Wilmer going to step up? Or do they just enjoy nickel-and-diming their associates in every possible manner?

What level clerk do you have to be to get the bonuses?

Any federal/state superior court? What about federal magistrate judges; do they have clerks?

avatar
24 Posted by It is I | Permalink Thursday, August 9, 2007 12:36 PM

Magistrate Judges don't have clerks, they have trained gerbils that spew out orders and opinions on pretrial, non-dispositive motions.

I know, I was one such trained gerbil.

I left the job one day in September after pooping in the water dish.

According to Quinn Emanuel's website:

"The firm offers judicial clerks a $50,000 signing bonus."

avatar
26 Posted by MJclerk | Permalink Thursday, August 9, 2007 12:55 PM

12:14 -- To answer your question more substantively than the poster at 12:36 -- who is obviously bitter at his/her lack of success in procuring any clerkship, and has written an entertaining (although completely misleading) account of MJ clerks' work -- most biglaw shops, at least in NYC, will give MJ clerks the same bonus as District Court clerks.

MJ Clerk:

I believe I recognize you from the cedar chip pile.

"Lack of success in procurring any clerkship?"

Nonsense. I was there.

avatar
31 Posted by dj clerk | Permalink Thursday, August 9, 2007 1:16 PM

actually, "It Is I" has it right, MJ clerks are trained gerbils. I was going to disagree and say that mj clerks were "guinea pigs," But I realized that that would give them too much credit. I'm glad to see that gerbils still get the bonuses though. all for figuring out how to find the water bottle.

MJclerk - why is the account misleading? What are some pros and cons of clerking for a MJ judge?

avatar
36 Posted by MJclerk | Permalink Thursday, August 9, 2007 2:22 PM

I can't speak for all districts, but in the EDNY, Magistrate Judges handle numerous dispositive motions on referral (i.e., summary judgement, motions to dismiss), and have a steady diet of civil trials (more than many DJs do in, say, Oklahoma). They also handle discovery from the filing of a complaint to the start of trial.

A district court clerkship is more prestigious, no doubt. And sometimes dealing with discovery issues can be vexing. However, clerking for an MJ is an incredibly valuable experience and is great preparation for biglaw, where you'll probably be working on discovery issues for a few years anyway. All the MJ clerks I know got jobs at top firms in NYC if they wanted them (along with the bonus).

People who refer to MJ clerks as "gerbils," while mildly amusing, are quite obviously not familiar with the way the federal judiciary works. I have never found DJ clerks to be rude or disrespectful about the difference between our respective jobs, and people who claim to be district court clerks (1:16) while disparaging the valuable work MJ clerks perform are simply not credible. DJ clerks are smarter than that by far (and really not at all that bitter).

Whoever is posting such vitriolic and insulting comments about a whole class of people is most likely a pre-law student (or perhaps a disgruntled attorney without a clerkship?) who has grown tired of XOXO. I would suggest they either go back to posting on that board or do more research before attempting to pose as an employee of the federal judiciary.

Lat, can you do a separate post regarding Quinn's raising to $50k? Every time a non-NY-based firm raises, it's relevant to all other such firms that have yet to raise. And by "relevant," I mean a kick in the butt.

Thanks.

MJclerk:

The "federal judiciary" has no employees. The US Courts, on the other hand, is the entity that paid my salary while I was a trained gerbil.

Look, I get it, you take yourself and your job seriously. I chose, and continue to choose, to do neither.

Unless they've raised recently, Covington (non-NY offices) should be added to the Vault List of Shame.
