Nationwide Pay Raise Watch: Fulbright & Jaworski (Texas)
The executive committee of Fulbright & Jaworski just took this action with respect to associate compensation in Texas:
"After due consideration of all relevant data and after listening to our clients, our partners, and our associates on the issue at hand, the Firm has determined that we will raise base compensation for associates in Texas offices in the classes of 2006 and 2007 to $160,000 per annum, effective today, August 1, 2007.""The Firm has commenced a comprehensive review of associate compensation and related recruiting and retention issues. These matters are of great importance to our partnership. We hope to complete this review by mid-autumn."
Our tipster's take:
"So F&J has punted even more than other Texas firms, only raising first years, probably because they already announced $165K for second years in DC with the deferred comp model."

First,
Sweet, I love Texas
How in the world did you guys get this info on ATL before I got it, sitting in the F&J Houston office??? You are amazing, Lat. Nice job.
5:39 -- FJ summer
Did you receive an email about this yet or was it announced in a meeting??
Baker Botts associates? Care to comment?
This is the text of a memo distributed earlier.
Baker Botts? Ah, who cares. The real inquiry is whether this is smoke and mirrors -- i.e. base salaries up and bonuses down, which would actually mean firms are moving toward lock-step systems (assuming you make billables) -- which would be terrible. TXBglawass

You are not in the know because you are about to be fired..
I think the Managing Partners secretly release these memos to Lat first. They want the word out...
lol @ Partner at F&J
5:47 - nope, no official word, yet. But, hey, I am a summer...
5:51 - probably. Probably. Next stop: monster.com.
Lat, you rock -- A3Gg
so does this mean no raise yet for mid-level associates? are 1st years making more than 4th years today?
Lat --
A&B in Atlanta just raised -- please see if you can get someone to confirm.
Memo says "hope to complete this review by mid-autumn." So are 1st and 2nd years to be paid more than the 3rd and 4th year associates until somewhere between September and March (is this the fall season?)
The only question that remains for BB is whether they will match or come in higher.
Rumor has it Alston & Bird in Atlanta announced something today. Anyone hear anything?
A&B did raise today. Starts at $145k, tops at $190k. So much for solving compression. Folks are devestated.
rumor has it that the 2008 vault 100 was listed today...can someone w/access please post
NYC money in Houston!!
the 2008 vault 100 is online and free
where is the 2008 vault 100....link?
found it...nevermind
Allen Matkins in CA raised to 160 today, with $15K raises to all other classes
Allen Matkins' raises had been announced informally some time ago. The official memo went out today - not the same thing. All firms of any significance in the California market have moved to $160 already. The real question is which firms will be able to take the next step, to $190 or $200.
So, in other words, A&B has decided to pay a 7th year in Atlanta 70k less than a 7th year in its Charlotte office?
K&S, match this "raise" at your peril. The problem is compression. Financing more 1st year increases by screwing your senior associates is just stupid.
I think the A&B raise doesn't go into effect for a while. Maybe 2008?
Yep, A&b effective 1/1/08. Morale at Atlanta firms is about = to Iraqi troops who surrendered to Amercian news crews during the invasion.
Can someone please post the full A&B scale?
A&B, read it and weep

no published amt for 8th years. assume 195. If that.
"Morale at Atlanta firms is about = to Iraqi troops who surrendered to Amercian news crews during the invasion."
That was great.
Any law student who falls for A&B's cynical bait-and-switch is a law student the partners there truly deserve.
Great timing given that K&S is making offer calls to its summers today and tomorrow.
You "petitioners" are only making things worse. You are causing people who ignored the original post (which was short and easily overlooked) to go back to it.
Good work. Keep it up.
This is a public safety issue. The more people who know about it, the more lives we can save.

"After due consideration ... after listening to our clients..."
F&J's clients told them to raise to $160k? O RLY?
David:
What are you afraid of? Why are you erasing my posts? Simply because of who I identify myself as?
Curious...
Wait. So alston raised in atlanta when nobody else was raising there but still won't raise in dc when the vast majority there has raised?! Alston dc people must be pissed. Anyone from there care to comment?
8:30 -- I don't think that can fairly be concluded yet. We haven't seen a memo, only anecdotal stuff in comments. [and Alston's DC office only has 100 lawyers. Anyone from there that can confirm whether Alston's raise was ATL only?]
Male Bartender, you think you're being so clever with your insinuation that Lat is gay.
Lat is openly gay, as you can learn from these here internets. So I'm sure he doesn't give a damn about your insinuations.
Nice try though.
7:14, if you leave comment spam like that, your IP address will get blocked.
I worked at Alston DC. It didn't matter what the pay was, all of the associates there hated it anyway. The DC office has not yet raised and it will probably be a struggle for them to do so politically with the reaction of the ATL associates to their new raise.
Holy smokes!!! Lat is Gay?????? Never knew that. In fact I didn;t think there were any Gay Asians except for geore Takai.
So...what's the updated list of shame for Texas? And a complete list of who's paying 160 in Texas? Anyone?
And especially helpful would be some differentiation between firms that have raised salaries reasonably for all associates, firms that have raised but with serious compression, firms that have raised 1st/2nd yrs but no word on others yet, etc.
What nationality is "Lat"? It sort of sounds Vietnamese to me. But I'm pretty clueless about Asian names and languages....

Anyone know anything about Littler Mendelson? DLA Piper? Dechert? Baker & McKenzie? Kelly Hart? Morgan Lewis? Wilson Elser? Yetter & Warden?
Does FJ pay for medical, dental, vision??? Also, does FJ provide any technology allowance or provide blackberry, etc
Where is Hunton? Aren't they raising?
what about the secretaries that teach the new attys how to do their job - where's their raise?
12:19 -- don't all the big firms do these things?
F&J Secretary,
Now you're talking! Secretaries and paralegals ought to make at least half what new associates are making, yet I suspect the big firms are NOT paying these people 80K. Anyone know what the going rate is for secretaries, assistants, and paralegals at the big firms?
160k in Houston!!!!!!!!!!!!!
33K - 55K
Is this raise effective in all Texas offices including San Antonio and Austin? I believe a previous poster mentioned a discrepancy in another San Antonio office.
Do these raises in Texas usually apply to Dallas and Houston only?
the prior post re: a discrepancy in the San Antonio offices was in regard to a different firm.
