Nationwide Pay Raise Watch: Fulbright & Jaworski (Texas)

Fulbright Jaworski LLP Abovethelaw Above the Law blog.jpgThe executive committee of Fulbright & Jaworski just took this action with respect to associate compensation in Texas:

"After due consideration of all relevant data and after listening to our clients, our partners, and our associates on the issue at hand, the Firm has determined that we will raise base compensation for associates in Texas offices in the classes of 2006 and 2007 to $160,000 per annum, effective today, August 1, 2007."

"The Firm has commenced a comprehensive review of associate compensation and related recruiting and retention issues. These matters are of great importance to our partnership. We hope to complete this review by mid-autumn."

Our tipster's take:

"So F&J has punted even more than other Texas firms, only raising first years, probably because they already announced $165K for second years in DC with the deferred comp model."

Baker Botts? Ah, who cares. The real inquiry is whether this is smoke and mirrors -- i.e. base salaries up and bonuses down, which would actually mean firms are moving toward lock-step systems (assuming you make billables) -- which would be terrible. TXBglawass

Lat --

A&B in Atlanta just raised -- please see if you can get someone to confirm.

Memo says "hope to complete this review by mid-autumn." So are 1st and 2nd years to be paid more than the 3rd and 4th year associates until somewhere between September and March (is this the fall season?)

A&B did raise today. Starts at $145k, tops at $190k. So much for solving compression. Folks are devestated.

Allen Matkins in CA raised to 160 today, with $15K raises to all other classes

avatar
23 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 1, 2007 9:14 PM

Allen Matkins' raises had been announced informally some time ago. The official memo went out today - not the same thing. All firms of any significance in the California market have moved to $160 already. The real question is which firms will be able to take the next step, to $190 or $200.

avatar
24 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 1, 2007 10:59 PM

So, in other words, A&B has decided to pay a 7th year in Atlanta 70k less than a 7th year in its Charlotte office?

K&S, match this "raise" at your peril. The problem is compression. Financing more 1st year increases by screwing your senior associates is just stupid.

avatar
25 Posted by anon | Permalink Wednesday, August 1, 2007 11:03 PM

I think the A&B raise doesn't go into effect for a while. Maybe 2008?

avatar
26 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, August 1, 2007 11:07 PM

Yep, A&b effective 1/1/08. Morale at Atlanta firms is about = to Iraqi troops who surrendered to Amercian news crews during the invasion.

You "petitioners" are only making things worse. You are causing people who ignored the original post (which was short and easily overlooked) to go back to it.

Good work. Keep it up.

This is a public safety issue. The more people who know about it, the more lives we can save.

avatar
37 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, August 2, 2007 9:03 AM

8:30 -- I don't think that can fairly be concluded yet. We haven't seen a memo, only anecdotal stuff in comments. [and Alston's DC office only has 100 lawyers. Anyone from there that can confirm whether Alston's raise was ATL only?]

Male Bartender, you think you're being so clever with your insinuation that Lat is gay.

Lat is openly gay, as you can learn from these here internets. So I'm sure he doesn't give a damn about your insinuations.

Nice try though.

I worked at Alston DC. It didn't matter what the pay was, all of the associates there hated it anyway. The DC office has not yet raised and it will probably be a struggle for them to do so politically with the reaction of the ATL associates to their new raise.

So...what's the updated list of shame for Texas? And a complete list of who's paying 160 in Texas? Anyone?

And especially helpful would be some differentiation between firms that have raised salaries reasonably for all associates, firms that have raised but with serious compression, firms that have raised 1st/2nd yrs but no word on others yet, etc.

Is this raise effective in all Texas offices including San Antonio and Austin? I believe a previous poster mentioned a discrepancy in another San Antonio office.

Do these raises in Texas usually apply to Dallas and Houston only?
