ATL Public Service Announcement: Wearing A Backpack May Be Hazardous To Your Health
You don’t have to take our word for it. Just attend “Backpack Awareness Day” at Georgetown:
Backpack Awareness Day
Join us in the Chapel Area
1:30-3:30 p.m.
September 20thTips to Prevent Back Problems:
- Wear both straps to distribute the weight evenly
- Wear the backpack resting evenly over the middle of the back. The backpack should not extend below the low back
- Adjust the straps so they are not too loose but still allow for free arm movement and ease in putting on and taking off the backpack
- Carry only those items needed for the day with the heaviest items closest to the back
- When selecting a backpack, choose one with
- A padded back
- Hip and chest belts
- Multiple compartments
- Reflective material to enhance visibility at night
Who knew that wearing a backpack could be so hard?
As weird Georgetown Law events go, Backpack Awareness Day isn’t as much fun as GULC’s yearly 1L moustache contest. That competition, which “renders the male 1L population even more unattractive than usual during finals period,” features “a dog show-style competition, kegs, professors judging, drunk spectators, 2L interlopers, and a Burt Reynolds commemorative plate for winner.”
But if you’re desperate for a way to procrastinate, perhaps Backpack Awareness Day will do the trick.

First?
They care about our welfare here at Georgetown. And given that my Fed Courts textbook is 1600 pages long, I'd better wear that backpack correctly.
LAT - Please try and restrict the discussion to T13 law schools. Really. This is as bad as when you did that write-up on Ave Maria.
a 2 hour seminar about the proper way to wear a backpack? Fucking ridicuolous- Only pedantic, didactic academics could think this is necessary. Worse, dozens of Georgetown tools will show up.
What gives Lat? Why do you give so much attention to a school that is always bringing up the rear of the t14? This make me so mad!
Wow. That's embarrassing.
Don't mind 12:18/12:19. He's just upset because he's at Cornell, Northwestern, Michigan, or some other school that's subsisting on a legacy for rankings while GULC crushes it on LSATs.
Firsters - no one gives a fucking shit. Damn, I hope all G'town 3Ls aren't as completely petty as you -- wait, they are.
A good school bag goes a long way. I used the same North Face through college and law school, worked out well.
The only reason people talk about T14 law schools is because we all have 14 fingers...oh, wait. What the hell? Could it be that Gtown trolls have just spammed the blogosphere with the phrase "T14" ad nauseum to make it sound like they (but no-one ranked lower) are in the elite?
Actually, that is probably the most clever thing anyone from GULC has ever done.
Bravo.
Har har, I get it. So compared to being, say, #8, being #14 is the equivalent of being functionally illiterate.
Also, it's not a 2-hour seminar. The health people (or "Wellness Awareness" or whatever they're calling themselves now) will be tabling in front of the cafeteria (that's "The Chapel Area"), doing their backpack thing for anyone who happens to be passing by between the hours of 1:30 and 3:30.
Silly, sure? "Fucking ridicuolous"? [sic] That's a little much.
CJ Roberts, GULC adjunct: GULC is full of strivers who think that by going to school 3 blocks from the Supreme Court it will give them bonus points. There is a reason GULC is ranked 14 even though it has high medians. You make me so mad!
Oh I almost forgot...Mich LSAT median to 169!!!
That should be "Silly? Sure."
And wow. Why all the hate?
Heh. My school is #4, bitches.
More than silly- Absolutely, galagtically fucking ridiculous- Why the fuck do people in their 20's and over need a 2 hour seminar on wearing a backpack?
Georgetown 3L: Why all the hate? I'll tell you why...it's because I'm ANGRY!
NYU Alum: You're only #4 because NYU is located in UWS. Too bad your rep scores are on par with Michigan, GO BLUE!
Absolutely (12:33): Please see my previous discussion on why it's not a 2-hour seminar. Thank you kindly.
"galagtically"?
They forgot to mention the part where we shoot law students who use wheelie backpacks.
This is actually just an attempt to round up and shoot all the law students who use wheelie backpacks.
G-town 1L: shhh! Don't let the secret out!
*blam!*
Absolutely (12:33): Please see my previous discussion on why it's not a 2-hour seminar. Thank you kindly.
conceeded.
My friend got into Gerogetown with a 165 lsat (class of 97)
Whah, whah, whah. You guys whine like a pack of bitches. Yeah, they're having a seminar on backpack awareness. Whoop-dee-damn-doo. They're also having one on meditation. If you dig it, go. If you don't, don't. But Lat, seriously, is this topic really worth a discussion?
As for all the G'town hate, see sentence #2 above.
12:42- LSAT scores for law students mean about as much as rankings for law schools. You're right in that there is no difference between 8 and 11 or between 15 and 18. But something does happen right around the 14 spot.
"T14" is used because the T14 are the schools that get hired by BigLaw deep into the class- even knuckleheads can work for $160k. T14 isn't about law school ranking nonsense. It's about the real scoreboard- good jobs. Trust me.
I h8 "T14" because it's GULC-speak for the common and base assumption by all lawyers everywhere (except L2L) that the "top tier" schools are "my law school and every law school rated higher by US News". It's GULC-speak for "me too, but not anyone else, no really, we're just the same as HYS only we're in DC and that makes us special". It's plain silly. And I h8 GULC for unleashing this silliness upon us.
That wasn't the real L2L, h8r. The real L2L went to your school.
Maybe you guys clerked at veterinary court together?
h8r: I don't think the T14 thing comes directly from Georgetown. No one here is saying that G'town is "just the same" as Harvard, Yale, or Stanford. I didn't apply to any of those schools (geographical ties to the mid-Atlantic), but I know it would be silly to equate GULC to those schools, at least on a prestige level.
But L2L has a point too. There was a recent article in American Lawyer (I think that's where it was) saying that more large firms will interview at Georgetown than at any other law school in the country, including HYS. If the end game is to get that $160K paycheck, even if you're not in the top 10% of the class, then Georgetown is definitely in the top tier.
GULC - Best posture in the t14 (oh, and did we mention we are really close to the Supreme Court?) lolz
1:01 (GULC 3L) - LOL, wow! GULC has the most employers interviewing for OCI maybe because they have the largest class size in the country. Ultimate prestige is over 700 employers for 300 students. You make me so angry!!
Back to the backpacks: they are also hazardous to your career because you look like a tool if you wear one when you are no longer in school.
GULC to T13!
Whatever, Mich 3L. That's why Cooley Law (same class size) is also so well-represented in the ranks of BigLaw. I hope you enjoyed all of your internships and academic year clerkships at the supreme court of Ann Arbor and the Michigan dept of justice (or whatever you all do out there).
Oh, and have a good winter.
Yeah, really. I'll take some junk from a decent school in a city with real jobs like GW, Fordham, NYU or whoever, but not from Michigan. When 1/3 of your class goes to practice in Canada . . . well, the exchange rate really cramps your style, huh?
Angry/h8r/etc.: the fact that you hate on GULC so vehemently tends to make me think that the school is doing its job - raising an army of lawyers that will crush you in the job market/networking circles because of any number of reasons - its long, fabled history, the high ranking of the other schools in its university (as compared to the border-line retarded mouth-breathers at NYU and Mich undergrad), or its influence on Capitol Hill (a factor you so easily discount and yet, is far from trivial).
I propose you suck on that for a while and give your thumb a break.
"You're only #4 because NYU is located in UWS"
Uh.
Angry Mich 3L is obviously so angry because he's never been to NYC and could never get a job here.
Lol at all the Michigan bashers. Can't handle a little harassing from a genuine top 10 school? What's even more amazing is that my school's closest metro area is DETROIT yet we place most of our graduates in NYC, DC, Chicago, and Cali. Must suck to be a GULC student and limited in NYC and DC (that is if you are in the top half, otherwise your career is as bleak as L2L).
AH, I'm so MAD at Michigan's lack of respect!!!!!!!!!!!!
12:34,
"NYU Alum: You're only #4 because NYU is located in UWS."
Huh? What does UWS mean, Upper West Side? Apparently you folks in fly-over land need to brush up on your Manhattan geography.
Geez, I mess up on where NYU is located and you freak out. Sorry I've never lived or want to live in NYC. California is the place for me, a place where anyone not in the top 10% at GULC could only dream about.
1:35: Huh? Did you just brag about being near Detroit? Of course you can't actually get a job there.
Here's areas that Mich Law is better than GULC, GW, or Vandy:
1. Mich has the most professors who teach that all sex is rape.
2. Ann Arbor has the highest communists per capita (of the areas mentioned).
3. Mich gives in-state preference to people from . . . Michigan.
4. Mich not only leads the Detroit legal market, but also the Lansing, Kalamazoo and Toledo, Ohio talent pools.
5. Mich's evening students don't have to worry about stuff like day jobs since there's nothing around but UAW plants and snow plows.
6. Mich competes with HYS by offering the 2.5 yr JD- allowing students to leave before their last winter to beg for jobs in cities dominated by other schools.
1:46:
1) I'm not even going to attempt to respond to this.
2) AA is liberal, and your point is?
3) 25% of UM are Michigan residents, they bring down the competition.
4) Michigan does lead the Michigan legal market...with the bottom 10% of the class (the only students that don't have their choice of markets)
5) Haha, you're right Michigan's evening students have no chance of finding employment. Check your info, GULC is the only t14 that is TTT enough to have an evening program.
6) There is also no 2.5 year JD (summer starters start a semester early, or perhaps the name SUMMER START confused you).
I think you have just been pwn3d!!! Thanks, I'm no longer so angry!
You know your school sucks when its most famous alum is a fictional character (see Gold, Ari).
Angry Mich. 3L
Please stop being such a douche and giving our school a bad rep.
And to the Mich haters out there, everyone knows we send our graduates to the top firms in every major market, and if you dont know that yet, you will as soon as you actually get a job and find us working there also.
2:00 - I'm just angry and sick of all the Michigan haters.
Is the median age in this posting 6? "My school is better than your school. Is not! Is too! Nuh-uh." Children, children calm down before somebody puts you in timeout.
Nice comebacks, 1:56. For a Canadian.
2:00 is too nice to rip on.
But I'm still going to no-offer the next summer we hire from Mich. Reason: Can't wear a backpack correctly.
Angry Mich 3L,
Why, exactly, are you so angry? If GULC is so terribly beneath you, why so many posts when you could be....um....I mean, Michigan, including Ann Arbor, is so full of.....NOTHING TO DO.
I am actually in a position to refute almost all of your statements as I 1) went to undergrad in Michigan; 2) got into UofM law but chose to attend GULC; 3) was not top 10% at GULC and got a biglaw job in San Francisco.
You are a douche. You are pissed off because you went to school in a grey, dirty state with a lot of fatties. You may get a job in a better market, but you'll be from Michigan, and you will continue to be bitter as you realize how incredibly provincial you are (maybe not everyone at UofM, but YOU? clearly - your postings are moronic) compared to those who have spent time in real cities with real diversity. A bunch of white people who don't bathe and live on communes outside Ann Arbor are just as provincial as schoolteacher Joe in Clinton Township; Ann Arbor isn't liberal, it's intoxicated from smelling its own farts.
Now go travel or read a book or do SOMETHING to get a personality. Stop posting it there are already enough tools posting. And stop wearing those pleated pants.
Penn...the SIXTH best school in the country. Take that Angry Mich 3L.
G'town 4E, you suck because you are an evening student. Even though you are Sen Levin's chief of staff or an Asst Sec Def. If you didn't suck you would have quit your six-figure high-status job and moved to Ann Arbor, where you could have started in the summer.
Sorry, but Mich 3L can't be wrong.
bitch, please - SUUUUURREEEE you got into MICHIGAN.
Can you fools please take this sorry excuse for a discussion to XOXO? Thanks.
Just ignore angry. He sounds like he could be this gunner in one of my classes. I assure you, nearly all Michigan students are pleasant and smart, angry Mich 3L is the exception.
Loud noises!
Mich 3L - thank you. I am going to accept that Angry Mich 3L has issues, is a douche, is not representative of UofM law students, and read something else.
Maybe I'll even do a little work.
Backpacks can put dat hurt on ya?
WHAAAAAAA-OOOOOOOOWWWWW!
I don't think I've ever been on a discussion board that has used the terms "douche," "moron" or "bitch" with greater frequency. Speaks volumes about lawyers in their 20's. Apparently, they fail to offer a course in dignity at T10 schools.
Man, how did a post on backpacks turn into a slam session on my alma mater (GULC) and my home state (Michigan)? You guys want to tell me my girlfriend is ugly and kick me in the junk a couple of times, too?
Whatever, douche
You guys want to tell me my girlfriend is ugly and kick me in the junk a couple of times, too?
Yes I do. Your girlfirend is a hag. Now bend over and let me kick you in the arse...
Angry Mich 3L--are you angry because your team lost to App? or because your team lost to Oregon? or because you are going to be buried in three feet of snow by November 1? There are so many reasons to be angry for being at Michigan, that I wonder why you are spending so much time worrying about Georgetown.

As usual, the George Washington U. Law School is five steps ahead of GULC and gets none of the credit:
http://section14.blogspot.com/2005/01/first-annual-section-14-mustache.html
Maybe we, too, should have made an epilepsy-inducing video.
Just wanted to say, mustache competition helped me survive 1L finals. And last year was our 2nd year doing it. GW, no doubt yours was great also.
GULC to T5!
Look, I'm new around here, but do all comment threads turn into "My school is ranked X and yours is ranked Y. YOU SUCK!"? If so, this is pretty pathetic. Lat, maybe you need a commenter screening system like you had with the Gawker network. I hate you all. Goodbye.
You people are all crazy. I go to Georgetown, yes, and it's a good school, yes, if not quite up to places like Havard and Yale in prestige. Up until now I would have said that one of its better points was that it wasn't filled with raving morons who haven't learned to use spellcheck and who have nothing better to do than perpetuate stupid law school flame wars on Above the Law. I'm sure any sane UMich. Law student feels the same way.
Lat, please consider turning off comments on law school-specific posts to avoid this type of idiocy.
12:12
Spell Check Havard
12:12, I don’t know which Georgetown you go to, but the one I go to is peppered with pathetic know-it-alls who smugly challenge the professor as if in seven weeks of Con Law, they’ve managed to learn more than the professor who’s been teaching it for 17 years (and who by the way actually argued and won the very case that the obnoxious student is bloviating about). All of the top schools have their share of these pricks. In fact, I suspect that many of those droning on in this post also fit the category. And if you think “my school doesn’t have any” that’s probably because you are one of them.
1:10 -- ha, hoisted on my own petard. I'm still human enough to appreciate irony, though law school graduation looms.
G.A.M., I know that Georgetown has its share of insufferable know-it-alls. It's a fact that the legal profession attracts pricks. I would just hope that most of us don't fall into that category. And no, I promise -- promise! -- that I have never challenged the ConLaw professor on her own case (I took ConLaw II with Bloch). I don't think I have ever consciously bloviated, and I am not a gunner. I'm just someone who thinks all this law school sniping is silly. The point is: Georgetown is a good school. U Mich is a good school. We'll all manage to get jobs regardless of how much anonymous sniping we do in Above the Law. But the back and forth about whose school is better/cooler/less densly populated with idiots makes everyone from these schools look terrible and makes lawyers in general look like petty morons. End speech. Back to writing paper on EU law.
GAM -- are you referring to Sam Dewey? Because he's at HLS now. And we miss him. So entertaining.
Happy to report that section 4 did not participate in last spring's mustache silliness. We were much to apathetic to stop shaving a specific part of our face. So much work...
