ATL Public Service Announcement: Wearing A Backpack May Be Hazardous To Your Health

backpack awareness day Georgetown University Law Center AboveTheLaw.jpgYou don’t have to take our word for it. Just attend “Backpack Awareness Day” at Georgetown:

Backpack Awareness Day
Join us in the Chapel Area
1:30-3:30 p.m.
September 20th

Tips to Prevent Back Problems:

- Wear both straps to distribute the weight evenly

- Wear the backpack resting evenly over the middle of the back. The backpack should not extend below the low back

- Adjust the straps so they are not too loose but still allow for free arm movement and ease in putting on and taking off the backpack

- Carry only those items needed for the day with the heaviest items closest to the back

- When selecting a backpack, choose one with

- A padded back
- Hip and chest belts
- Multiple compartments
- Reflective material to enhance visibility at night

Who knew that wearing a backpack could be so hard?

As weird Georgetown Law events go, Backpack Awareness Day isn’t as much fun as GULC’s yearly 1L moustache contest. That competition, which “renders the male 1L population even more unattractive than usual during finals period,” features “a dog show-style competition, kegs, professors judging, drunk spectators, 2L interlopers, and a Burt Reynolds commemorative plate for winner.”

But if you’re desperate for a way to procrastinate, perhaps Backpack Awareness Day will do the trick.

They care about our welfare here at Georgetown. And given that my Fed Courts textbook is 1600 pages long, I'd better wear that backpack correctly.

The only reason people talk about T14 law schools is because we all have 14 fingers...oh, wait. What the hell? Could it be that Gtown trolls have just spammed the blogosphere with the phrase "T14" ad nauseum to make it sound like they (but no-one ranked lower) are in the elite?

Actually, that is probably the most clever thing anyone from GULC has ever done.

Bravo.

Har har, I get it. So compared to being, say, #8, being #14 is the equivalent of being functionally illiterate.

Also, it's not a 2-hour seminar. The health people (or "Wellness Awareness" or whatever they're calling themselves now) will be tabling in front of the cafeteria (that's "The Chapel Area"), doing their backpack thing for anyone who happens to be passing by between the hours of 1:30 and 3:30.

Silly, sure? "Fucking ridicuolous"? [sic] That's a little much.

23 Posted by L2L | Permalink Wednesday, September 19, 2007 12:49 PM

12:42- LSAT scores for law students mean about as much as rankings for law schools. You're right in that there is no difference between 8 and 11 or between 15 and 18. But something does happen right around the 14 spot.

"T14" is used because the T14 are the schools that get hired by BigLaw deep into the class- even knuckleheads can work for $160k. T14 isn't about law school ranking nonsense. It's about the real scoreboard- good jobs. Trust me.

avatar
24 Posted by h8r | Permalink Wednesday, September 19, 2007 12:56 PM

I h8 "T14" because it's GULC-speak for the common and base assumption by all lawyers everywhere (except L2L) that the "top tier" schools are "my law school and every law school rated higher by US News". It's GULC-speak for "me too, but not anyone else, no really, we're just the same as HYS only we're in DC and that makes us special". It's plain silly. And I h8 GULC for unleashing this silliness upon us.

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Wednesday, September 19, 2007 12:58 PM

That wasn't the real L2L, h8r. The real L2L went to your school.

Maybe you guys clerked at veterinary court together?

avatar
26 Posted by Georgetown 3L | Permalink Wednesday, September 19, 2007 1:01 PM

h8r: I don't think the T14 thing comes directly from Georgetown. No one here is saying that G'town is "just the same" as Harvard, Yale, or Stanford. I didn't apply to any of those schools (geographical ties to the mid-Atlantic), but I know it would be silly to equate GULC to those schools, at least on a prestige level.

But L2L has a point too. There was a recent article in American Lawyer (I think that's where it was) saying that more large firms will interview at Georgetown than at any other law school in the country, including HYS. If the end game is to get that $160K paycheck, even if you're not in the top 10% of the class, then Georgetown is definitely in the top tier.

avatar
33 Posted by wtf (GULC '04) | Permalink Wednesday, September 19, 2007 1:27 PM

Angry/h8r/etc.: the fact that you hate on GULC so vehemently tends to make me think that the school is doing its job - raising an army of lawyers that will crush you in the job market/networking circles because of any number of reasons - its long, fabled history, the high ranking of the other schools in its university (as compared to the border-line retarded mouth-breathers at NYU and Mich undergrad), or its influence on Capitol Hill (a factor you so easily discount and yet, is far from trivial).

I propose you suck on that for a while and give your thumb a break.

1:35: Huh? Did you just brag about being near Detroit? Of course you can't actually get a job there.

Here's areas that Mich Law is better than GULC, GW, or Vandy:

1. Mich has the most professors who teach that all sex is rape.
2. Ann Arbor has the highest communists per capita (of the areas mentioned).
3. Mich gives in-state preference to people from . . . Michigan.
4. Mich not only leads the Detroit legal market, but also the Lansing, Kalamazoo and Toledo, Ohio talent pools.
5. Mich's evening students don't have to worry about stuff like day jobs since there's nothing around but UAW plants and snow plows.
6. Mich competes with HYS by offering the 2.5 yr JD- allowing students to leave before their last winter to beg for jobs in cities dominated by other schools.

1:46:

1) I'm not even going to attempt to respond to this.

2) AA is liberal, and your point is?

3) 25% of UM are Michigan residents, they bring down the competition.

4) Michigan does lead the Michigan legal market...with the bottom 10% of the class (the only students that don't have their choice of markets)

5) Haha, you're right Michigan's evening students have no chance of finding employment. Check your info, GULC is the only t14 that is TTT enough to have an evening program.

6) There is also no 2.5 year JD (summer starters start a semester early, or perhaps the name SUMMER START confused you).

I think you have just been pwn3d!!! Thanks, I'm no longer so angry!

Angry Mich 3L,

Why, exactly, are you so angry? If GULC is so terribly beneath you, why so many posts when you could be....um....I mean, Michigan, including Ann Arbor, is so full of.....NOTHING TO DO.

I am actually in a position to refute almost all of your statements as I 1) went to undergrad in Michigan; 2) got into UofM law but chose to attend GULC; 3) was not top 10% at GULC and got a biglaw job in San Francisco.

You are a douche. You are pissed off because you went to school in a grey, dirty state with a lot of fatties. You may get a job in a better market, but you'll be from Michigan, and you will continue to be bitter as you realize how incredibly provincial you are (maybe not everyone at UofM, but YOU? clearly - your postings are moronic) compared to those who have spent time in real cities with real diversity. A bunch of white people who don't bathe and live on communes outside Ann Arbor are just as provincial as schoolteacher Joe in Clinton Township; Ann Arbor isn't liberal, it's intoxicated from smelling its own farts.

Now go travel or read a book or do SOMETHING to get a personality. Stop posting it there are already enough tools posting. And stop wearing those pleated pants.

12:12, I don’t know which Georgetown you go to, but the one I go to is peppered with pathetic know-it-alls who smugly challenge the professor as if in seven weeks of Con Law, they’ve managed to learn more than the professor who’s been teaching it for 17 years (and who by the way actually argued and won the very case that the obnoxious student is bloviating about). All of the top schools have their share of these pricks. In fact, I suspect that many of those droning on in this post also fit the category. And if you think “my school doesn’t have any” that’s probably because you are one of them.

1:10 -- ha, hoisted on my own petard. I'm still human enough to appreciate irony, though law school graduation looms.

G.A.M., I know that Georgetown has its share of insufferable know-it-alls. It's a fact that the legal profession attracts pricks. I would just hope that most of us don't fall into that category. And no, I promise -- promise! -- that I have never challenged the ConLaw professor on her own case (I took ConLaw II with Bloch). I don't think I have ever consciously bloviated, and I am not a gunner. I'm just someone who thinks all this law school sniping is silly. The point is: Georgetown is a good school. U Mich is a good school. We'll all manage to get jobs regardless of how much anonymous sniping we do in Above the Law. But the back and forth about whose school is better/cooler/less densly populated with idiots makes everyone from these schools look terrible and makes lawyers in general look like petty morons. End speech. Back to writing paper on EU law.
