Law Firm News: Odds and Ends

Harriet Miers money Harriet E Miers Harriet Ellan Miers Harriet Elan Miers Above the Law.JPG1. Back in May, Locke Liddell & Sapp, of Houston and Dallas, and Lord, Bissell & Brook, of Chicago, announced plans to merge. Those plans have now been finalized, and the merger will take effect on October 2.

Sadly, they didn't take our advice about that unwieldy name: the new firm will be known as Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell. More details appear in the Texas Lawyer.

2. Some readers were impressed by the ability to earn $160,000 in Connecticut, by working in the Stamford office of Paul Hastings.

Guess it was too good to last. PH is closing its Stamford office effective December 3rd. We contacted the firm for comment, and they issued this statement:

"As transactions and cases become more sophisticated and global in scope, they require large teams of attorneys and deeper resources. We have decided to consolidate our New York and Stamford offices in order to better serve our client's growing needs."

Paul Hastings in Stamford, RIP.

Has anyone heard about this letter future clerks are supposed to get from judges to grandfather them in to the advanced pay salary? I hear if you don't have one you will not get credit for the salary you're making at your firm. Does anyone know anything?

Clerkship:

Here's the language: "Commitments
made to specific individuals prior to September 18, 2007, that
explicitly state in writing a commitment to an advanced step salary
will be honored." You have to call your judge's chambers TODAY and ask for a letter (or probably an email would do).

I just called my judge's chambers and they had already heard about it. They're sending me a letter today confirming that I will be paid based on the advanced step salary for my clerkship beginning in 2008.

Interesting that Paul Hastings is closing the Stamford office. When I expressed concerns, during a callback interview, at their San Diego office that most of the office's work was from out of town clients they assured me that "Paul Hastings has NEVER closed an office". Guess they don't have that line to lean on anylonger. I wonder how healthy their San Diego office is now ?? (I took a job elsewhere)

PH's Stamford office never was able to get any of the big fish in Stamford, like UBS, it was just an outpost doing labor and real estate. No surpise they're closing, this is an admission of failure.
