A Cravath Lawyer Who Screws the Kiddies

James Colliton Jim Colliton Cravath Swaine Moore Above the Law blog.jpgAnd we’re not talking about CSM partners working young associates to death, riding them hard and putting them away wet. We’re speaking more literally.

We mentioned this story briefly at the time of his guilty plea, but his sentencing yesterday gives us the opportunity to revisit it in more depth. From the AP:

A tax lawyer who paid a woman so he could have sex with her two underage daughters was sentenced Thursday and declared a sex offender but wasn’t expected to spend much more time behind bars.

James Colliton pleaded guilty this month to second- and third-degree statutory rape and patronizing a prostitute. He received a sentence of one year on each count, to run concurrently.

But because he has already been jailed for 19 months, Colliton, 43, was eligible for immediate release. His lawyer, Howard Greenberg, said he expected the defendant to be released Thursday.

So where’s Colliton headed? Due to his felony conviction, he won’t be able to return to the practice of law (at least not immediately). But might Cravath give him a non-legal or administrative job, perhaps in Recruiting? He likes working with young people.

(Such a gig, however, probably wouldn’t pay Colliton the $500,000 salary that he earned as a senior or permanent associate at Cravath — more than partners at some firms.)

Hey, they let homosexuals and transvestites in, why not registered sex offenders? I'm surprised there's not an Al Sharpton march on City Hall for registered sex offenders. They're people too. By the way, to lump this guy in with dudes who diddle 5 year olds is kind of ridiculous (unless he diddled 5 year olds).

You don't have to answer to the state bar for your conviction and 19 months in jail for being homosexual or a transvestite.

Wow. That's hilarious. He paid somebody to rape two very young girls. "He likes working with young people": get it?!

“My client made $500,000 a year,” he said. “He had the wherewithal to pay for any piece of tuchus on the planet. And he paid that skank?”

Um, that's the best part of the story....

The only problem is he should have been consistent with the yiddish and followed up by calling her a "shiksa" instead of a "skank." I also think it would have been less offensive...if that's even possible.

What is the deal with him making $500k? I thought Cravath seniors maxed out at $265k? Was he making almost that much again in bonues?

A fifteen-year-old girl is a sexually mature, adult woman in a strict biological sense. It is only a social construct that she is said to lack the capacity to willingly consent (we have to protect her--or maybe we have to protect ourselves--from her budding female sexuality). I fail to see what is morally reprehensible about having sex with a fifteen-year-old girl.

I really don't see the humor in a story about the rape of a 13 year old. Next time Lat tries to get on TV, I hope they do some checking and find out that he thinks stuff like this is funny.

18 Posted by Bitchy McBitchington, III | Permalink Friday, October 12, 2007 11:35 AM

11:30, a woman's biological maturity is not at issue. We're all familiar with the old axiom "when there's grass on the field..." What is at issue here is her mental capacity to consent - and quite frankly 15 year olds are idiots.

At 15, I pumped gas while the car was running...though I had a banging pair of tits.

Why are you all so scared of female sexuality? Why do you strive to keep it under cover--to smother it with rules and customs and taboos--for as long as you can?

avatar
31 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, October 12, 2007 12:22 PM

Kaavya,

Nobody is scared of female sexuality, certainly not after getting their fill of it during freshman year of college. Personally, I'm scared of male sexuality that is unwilling to draw a line - a line marking the notion that while from a certain age on, women may be *sexually* mature, they are not necessarily *psychologically* mature, and not being a desperate creep, one may comfortably confine himself to the more mature crop.

Clearly "Kaavya" is making silly arguments to try to get a rise out of people. But anyway, the law isn't just "smothering" "female sexuality". Sex with 15 y/o boys is illegal too, in case you haven't noticed...

To 11:14: 265k is (or until recently, was) the max salary for a senior associate. This guy is a Senior Attorney, which at Cravath is similar to a Counsel at Skadden or Special Counsel at some other firms. Generally, it is a non-equity position ranking above associate and lower than partner. Some of these people are still eligible to be partner and some are not (and some don't give a damn). At elite, equity-only, firms such as Cravath, it is the functional equivilant of a non-equity partner. $500,000 total compensation is about right.

A year for each? That's it? Shit, I'm surprised we don't have more people running around raping children. What's a year in jail? And he didn't even serve the full two years, he only did 19 months.

Rape's gotta be the easiest crime to get away with. If more men knew that, they'd get laid a lot more.

If he only waited two years she would have been legal at 17 in New York. The age of consent is 14 in Canada and 15 in France. People are so willing to impose their view of when human sexuality should begin on others.
