Federal Government Perk Watch: Germ-y Gyms
If you're an employee of the U.S. Department of Justice, and your name isn't Susana Lorenzo-Giguere, your job probably doesn't have many perks. They toss a few four-dollar meatballs your way, and public outcry ensues.
And now you can't even go to the office gym, thanks to a potential outbreak of staph infections, aka "Staphylococcus aureus." All three DOJ fitness centers are being closed for "a thorough cleaning" (which makes you wonder how "thorough" the regular cleanings are).
First the rat-ridden day care center, and now this. What next for the DOJ's beleaguered employees?
These are not the easiest times to be at the DOJ. In the wake of the U.S. Attorneys firing controversy, the Justice Department has been plagued by a leadership vacuum (not just in terms of no Attorney General, but a very high number of acting AAGs). It has also suffered from a loss of public respect and low employee morale.
But no gym? To quote Justice Scalia, "this is really more than one should have to bear."
The memo, which includes tips for preventing infection that everyone should read, appears after the jump.
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE -- MEMORANDUM -- CLOSING OF DOJ FITNESS CENTERS FOR CLEANING

Justice Scalia works out???
Antonin is far from trim.
Does duck hunting count?
There were alot of us going to buy hand sanitizer after we saw this on the Intranet.
"avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages"
That just sounds like good common sense, hopefully the people defending our country are smart enough not to need this sort of advice.
Why do people in DC even bother? It's not like you live in LA.
Speaking of gyms and lawyers (some of you who had cushy federal clerkship positions may find this sobering)... in a local state district court in the city I practice in, the law clerks to the district judges are not given desks in chambers with their judges. No, that would make too much sense. Instead, they are all bundled up together on another floor each with a cubicles inside of the larger room that is noneother than the judge's workout room. What is worse -- the law clerks are not even allowed to use the equipment, even though they have to listen to the equipment being used during the day. Whoever said a clerkship was prestigious never worked there...
2:02: At the U.S. Supreme Court, half of the clerks are on a different floor from their justices' chambers. (But at least it's not a judges' gym.)
David:
It's AAsG, not AAGs. There are many attorneys, but only one general. You know better.
I clerked ddc. My personal office, in the new annex, had a view of the capital -- best in the city. beat that!
3:34, in conversation, nobody says "AAsG." I have never seen that acronym in my life. People just live with the confusion between assistant attorney generals and the associate attorney general.
Actually 6:31, I believe 3:34 was referring to that fact that it's Assistant Attorneys General. Get the net.
Note that Shanetta Cutlar's kingdom is in the Patrick Henry Building. Could there be a connection???
