Or Like Lawyers Who Blog For A Living

robins.gifHi all, this is Billy Merck once again (for those regulars out there who already hate know me, check out the link anyway, ‘cause the site’s been revamped), mostly filling in for today and tomorrow, though Lat is probably going to poke his head in a time or two.

We’re going to be continuing Non-Top-Tier Law School Week, but first this morning we have a bit of biglaw advertising. Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, LLP want you to know that they’re real trial lawyers who, you know, like, actually go to trial and stuff. The creative way that their advertising agency came up with to express that idea follows the jump.

I interviewed with this firm once. They're selling point to me was, "Our lawyers don't get divorced as much as lawyers at other firms." Nice recruiting.

I don't get it, what don't they finish?

This ad is retarded

Merck, your webpage has a giant image instead of text! What's up with that?

avatar
11 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:15 AM

Who cares? No one tries cases anymore.

avatar
12 Posted by Just one man’s humble opinion | Permalink Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:16 AM

Actually, it's very clever.

I'd like to find a firm where working there will ensure a divorce, and then help me win a settlement so I can keep all the money. Now that's a selling point!

Interesting

Trial lawyers who never go to trial get disputes taken care of more efficiently. They left that part out.

who don't finish their ... what? WHAT?!

avatar
18 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:23 AM

The ad is not consistent--"don't" vs. "can't." They should have either said "don't" instead of "can't" or "can't" instead of "don't".

finally, a law firm that can see the lighter side of things...what do u know, such firms actually do exist!

avatar
20 Posted by BL dirtbag | Permalink Thursday, October 4, 2007 10:26 AM

you're right - "can't" throughout would be more effective

I'm guessing they mean Naples, Florida.

10:18 - Naples, FL

Check out the scary zoomed in pictures on the website. They change on refresh, and they make several men look like peeping toms. http://rkmc.com/

Merck,

For your site to have been revamped, it must first have been vampy. It was a dump and remains so; riddled with the same old careless errors but at least no more pictures of your stupid face.

See, e.g.

http://mercklaw.com/?q=node/1

"We can help you negotiate and draft contracts, protect your intellectual property rights, and handle most litigation that might encounter."

Nice.

10:41 - Those are "easter eggs" Merck has hidden on his site. If you find one, you get one free hour of Westlaw research done by Merck himself.

Merck, you need to hire someone to proof read your web page. "Law Offices of Billy Merck" is PLURAL. Throughout the page you refer to it in the singular, as in "The Law Offices of Billy Merck is here to help." That's obviously wrong.

And it's "Got a band?" Not "Gotta band?" The latter means "Do you have to band?" The word "band" is not a verb.

On the other hand: maybe Merck isn't real, or isn't really an attorney. Astonishingly bad.

and yeah, proofread is one word. but i'm commenting on a blog, not posting something up on the web advertising my services.

Naples is actually a big legal market for certain practice areas (real estate, trusts and estates, wealth management, and bankruptcy). Not a bad place to live either if you can afford it. Not sure about the litigation aspect of Naples though, may high profile divorce (if you count that as litigation). If you are ever in Naples, go to the steakhouse at the Ritz Carlton and order their 18 oz. filet. Simply unreal. And also $90 so make sure you can expense it to a client!!

to 10:00 -- one of their lawyers, Kathleen Flynn Peterson, is the current President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (well, now the American Association for Justice, but who the heck knows what that is??)

Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and . . . Naples?

They used to have a DC office. I used to work there. It imploded. They lost half their headcount in under a week - when large market partners make the same $ as minneapolis partners (no COL adjustment, even though DC billing rates are >25% higher), and you pay your DC associates on a $130K scale with little bonuses and refuse to raise... what else can you expect?

It's a good ad. But going to trial is seriously overrated. Law students always think that's what they want to do. Little do they know, that it's less "Law and Order" and more "sh*tload of work", "all nighters," and -- for the most part in a business case -- "boring." It's also generally a very bad way to resolve a complex dispute bc the substance inevitably goes way, way over jurors' heads.

Robins=did great a few years ago with tobacco stuff. They now think they are so hot. Their recruiting sucks too. They give out offers to join for the summer after the ON-CAMPUS interview. Well, I guess thats positive due to the fact that you don't have to endure a 4 hour long interview in their offices while having to pee the whole time. But it also sucks that you don't get a free nice lunch. I'm sure they make it up to you with a BJ.

The firm really isn't that great. They have a bunch of people who are generally full of themselves and pride themselves on spending ridiculous amounts of time on things becuase they are not being able to identify issues or be objective.
