There may not be other wrestlers in law school, but that's because wrestling's fake and it sucks. Nick "The Goat" Thompson does MMA while going to the University of Minnesota Law School, and I'd take him over Mr. Key any day of the week.

OK, well I read about 20 pages of this kid's book and I have to say that it is pretty much what I would have expected.

Joel Osteen = bad guy because he teaches that God wants you to be rich and happy. This is because the true church is the "persecuted church" (like those in China). Oh, but just in case you were wondering, its ok if you were rich to start--you just can't get rich as a Christian.

In short, what I read indicates that the book is yet another echo of his whole appearance, buck-the-system behavior, and wrestlerhood. You have to be outside the system in order to be cool, right or righteous.

I won't go into any more real detail but, while I agree that Osteen is rather slim on substance in his Christian messages, they aren't sending people to hell and he certainly is not a false prophet. You can be rich and Godly whether you started as either or not.

Finally, all that being said, I do think that Regent is a TTT, and acting completely out of line. Did Key invite it? Perhaps not even consciously, but yes, I think he definitely is enjoying it one way or another. It all fits too well into his outsider, pain and suffering is the way to the truth mentality.

I, too, skimmed over Mr. Key's charitably-termed "book," which manages to hit 90 pages the way most people pad 10 pages to meet the requirements of a paper in high school. I was soundly unimpressed, particularly with the run-on sentence motif. I was actually rather appalled by one bit in particular where Mr. Key excerpted Larry King interviewing Joel Osteen. Mr. Osteen is quoted as not having heard a particular Eastern saying about taking each day as a gift, but he responds to Mr. King's inquiry by saying he agrees with the sentiment of appreciating each day. Mr. Osteen goes on to agree with the principles of charity espoused in the Talmud. Mr. Key's response includes this astounding bit of vitriol:

"Osteen demonstrates here that he has profaned the Holy things of the Lord. He has put no difference between the holy and the profane, Christian faith and Eastern philosophy, the unclean and the clean, the Talmud and the Bible. There is a difference between Christianity and every other religion, whether Osteen wants to admit it or not. It’s not just about loving any god, it’s about loving our God above any other and submitting ourselves to His perfect Will."

Mr. Key's position seems to be that Christians should not even agree with other religions, and his implications that Eastern philosophy and the Talmud are "unclean" and "profane" just speak for themselves. My support for this fellow has diminished to nothing, as I think Regent and Mr. Key have just become mired in each other's spite and mediocrity.

Students at Regent have an opportunity to sign up for an email bulletin board called THEBRANCH. Anyone who is signed up can send an email which will be received everyone who has signed up. Normally the purpose is to share information like I want to sell or buy such and such.

It was through this service that I first learned of Mr. Key's problem. Some time after the meeting at which he was directed to remove the photo he posted on the branch complaining about the incident. He explained that he was told that his message (whatever it was) was not conveyed in the proper academic setting. His purpose in posting on the branch was to voice his message in that proper setting.

His hypocracy in this situation was also apparent in the message--he wrote that any reply should be directed to him through private email. The effect, had others done as he requested, would have been that he voiced his message publicly without it being subjected to public scrutiny and debate about that position. Is this not exactly what he complains that the university has done by telling him he can't voice dissent?

Then the university tried to correct the problem as Mr. Key resisted and decided nationalize his story. Again, Mr. Key had the luxury of a public forum where only his voice would be heard since the university is legally limited in the response it can make to his statements. When he tried this on the branch, he failed; the students responded to his message with a sound critique that undermined his logic and pointed out the numerous inconsistencies in his statements. The national coverage by contrast has been largely one sided. Mr. Key claims to be upset about free speech, but his actions indicate that all he wants is to make his arguments without having to face any form of rebuttal.

I would like to briefly comment on the speech that he feels was squelched. The original photo was a sophomoric joke without any cognizable message. Mr. Key had to explain his intent before a message could be understood. His explanation (offered in the branch message and following discussion) was that the photo was posted to show that Pat is a bad man. The logical question that flows from this is "how does the image show that he is a bad man." The answer is that Pat is making an obsene Gesture. When the bits of information are synthesized Mr. Key's argument can be seen--Pat is bad because he flipped someone off.

There is a serious problem with this message becuase it is a lie. The image is presented out of context. It is taken from a video in which Pat was scratching his face. Mr. Key takes advantage of a benign action, frames it in a dishonest manner, and uses to support an attack on Pats character.

What then was the university's objection and mandate to Mr. Key? Essentially it was that he had to stip lying. Mr. Key complains that his free speech was violated because he was told to stop lying. I don't think a lie is the sort of free speech that needs to be protected.

Mr. Key was not told by the university that he could voice dissent about Pat and he admitted this in the branch messages. Rather he was told the dissent had to be voiced in an academic context.

Finally, I want to say that I am not at all a strong supporter of Pat. I think that he has serious flaws which are deserving of criticism, some of those are mentioned in this discussion. The biggest problem I have with the actions of Mr. Key is not is message, but his motive. My view of the scenario is that Mr. Key posted the picture because he thought it was entertaining, nothing more. He was told to remove it and his anti-authoritarian nature kicked in. He wasn't willing to abide by the rules of the school. He then invented a complaint that the school is trying to silence his criticism. The school has standards and rules which have nothing to do with free speech and which student are required to follow. Mr. Key doesn't want to follow the rules, and that is what the whole complaint is really about.

I wish somebody would help me. I have never even met Gigi Lacey. I never asked those televangelists for anything. Russ Ritchel was my pastor and he handed me over to them and then he hid himself and denied knowing anything about any of it. I knew nothing about his sexual affair with Gigi until recently and I only found out about Gordon and Gigi recently too. I did not understand why they would not leave us alone. I kept telling through that online prayer page on CBN.com to leave me alone but they only got angrier and more aggressive with me.
