The Possibly Propositioning Professor: Here's the Incident Report

As we first reported yesterday, Professor D. Marvin Jones, who teaches constitutional law and criminal procedure (!) at the University of Miami law school, has been arrested for solicitation of a prostitute. Here's an interesting tidbit, from Blogonaut:

Professor Jones is the author of Race, Sex, and Suspicion: The Myth of the Black Male. Dare we predict a racially based defense? Or perhaps the good professor was merely researching a new book?

Some of you asked for more details about the alleged conduct. We've gotten on our hands on the incident report, which appears below. Note the tension between (1) Professor Jones's pimpin' ride, a Mercedes SL500, and (2) his alleged offer of a mere $20 to the "undercover officer possing [sic] as a prostitute."

Law professors don't make as much as Biglaw partners. But surely the driver of a Mercedes could be a little more generous!

That already happened. See Underneath Their Robes.

Lat had paid his karmic debt in advance, so he can now run up a tab.

What is an attempted offer? He either offered money for sex or he didn't.

Is an SL500 a convertible or a coupe?

3:56/3:57, I generally think it's silly to chastise people for poor writing on a message board, but, holy crap, did you read that thing back to yourself before repeatedly jamming the "post" button?

4:05, it can be either.

4:05, hardtop convertible.

This is hilarious. I suspected it would have been through a professional escort service (a la the Akin Gump Hooker)--the fact that it was (someone posing as) a streetwalker (combined with the $20 offer) makes this much, much better.

*yawn* someone remind me again why we waste police resources on this instead of legalizing it and regulating it closely? do people really give a shit that this guy likes hookers?

Yes but is Officer Jean-Baptiste a man or a woman????? Inquiring minds want to know!!! Lat - I believe a call to the police station (or prosecutor's office) is in order!

4:03, that's why cops aren't appellate advocates.

Maybe someone knows - is it customary in police "incident reports" to refer to someone as "defendant"? I'm not a criminal lawyer, so I really don't know, but wouldn't that term be reserved for someone who's actually being prosecuted?

avatar
17 Posted by Tone Loc | Permalink Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:18 PM

$20 is a bit cheap. As most eloquently stated by the hooker in Tone Loc's "Wild Thing": "I need fifty dollars to make you holla cuz I get PAID to do the wild thing."

avatar
18 Posted by Ton Loc | Permalink Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:22 PM

It's "Ton." My name is Ton Loc.

Actually, the incident report says the "defendant" professor was working undercover:

"While working an undercover prostitution detail at above address, defendant was observed . . . "

Classic misplaced participial phrase. Rule 11 in Strunk & White.

Stupid cops.

$20 is the going rate you idiots. Only an NYU fool would pay anything more.

21 Posted by anon | Permalink Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:36 PM

4:17 - he was charged with soliciting a prostitute which would make him a criminal defendant.

avatar
24 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:46 PM

Dear 4:05: an SL500 is a convertible. and a pimp'in ride it is ($125K)

MB now offers a retractible hardtop option as well, so no more winter storage of that heavy hardtop.

Alas, we sold the wife's SL and my Targa and bought a "family car".

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Thursday, October 18, 2007 4:53 PM

wouldn't you want to store the hardtop during the summer? Do you use the softtop in the winter?

"Dear 4:05: an SL500 is a convertible. and a pimp'in ride it is ($125K)"
Perhaps that will be his defense: with a ride like that, he was her pimp, not her customer.

Is there a union for street walking whores? I see a collective bargaining opportunity here. Please consider this post as a request to all whores to recognize me as their bargaining representative.

$20 is what you pay when you *don't* have the "the wherewithal to pay for any piece of tuchus on the planet."

were this guy an attorney at cravath, he'd be paying $10 grand to bang a mother's two teen daughters.

4:36 - I believe the incident report is prepared by the police before the suspect is charged by the state attorney's office, so he wouldn't be a defendant yet.

Hee hee, sometimes I worry about our rankings slipping, but AFAIK none of our profs have been arrested lately for trying to pick up hookers.

And South Florida ain't #2 anymore! When we crush the Huskies this weekend, Oregon is going to crack the top 5.

4:17 and 4:36, when I had to read police reports a lot, they usually would refer to the "defendant" as the suspect. It's not proper to call the person a "defendant" yet, because at the time the police report is being written, charges have not yet been filed, and it is still uncertain whether charges even will be filed.

46 Posted by xoxoGuy | Permalink Friday, October 19, 2007 8:32 PM

Why are some of u idiots defending him? There's an enormous difference between dropping $300 for a call girl and dropping $20 to a streetwalker. One is mere horniness (and really could be left alone), the other preys on _victims_.

I have no doubt that this dude has some major psychological problems, and he avenges them by using these poor women who are not on the street volitionally.

Personally I think the charge is a stupid waste of law enforcement time and taxpayer money. Hell I've paid for sex; it's called a "date." And trust, if I'm dropping 100 bucks for dinner then somebody's dropping to their knees and....
