The world was inspired this week when thousands of Pakistani lawyers, many of them from law schools in this country, took to the streets as torchbearers of democracy. After President Musharaff abolished the Supreme Court and four Provincial High Courts, scrapped the Constitution and detained Supreme Court judges, lawyers in black suits and ties marched in peaceful protest to this affront to the rule of law. Their march was not met peacefully-instead, they encountered police batons, fists, and tear gas. Thousands of them have been injured and arrested. Some have even been charged with treason, which carries a sentence of death.
In a quiet gesture of respect, and in honor of all those who risk life and liberty to take a stand for justice, Austin lawyers are asked to wear black suits and white shirts on Wednesday, Nov. 14. May we all be granted the strength and courage to make the sacrifices that they have.
