Additional Information: Founded in 1983, this international consulting firm was formed to challenge “the legions of consultants who got bogged down in details and were afraid to radically change the companies they were trying to save,” according to an article in BusinessWeek. To this day, the firm describes its approach as “tactical” rather than “strategic,” noting, “Our view is from two feet, not 20,000 feet.”
This company’s initial foray into consulting focused on helping troubled companies with debt management and advisory services. While the corporate turnaround game is still its main focus, the firm has branched out into operational and strategy consulting as well. The privately held, owner-operated firm reportedly employs around 1,100 consultants worldwide, with offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The firm’s business consulting division got its start in 2004 by bringing consulting vets from high-profile positions at BearingPoint, Answerthink, Accenture and other firms. This firm’s business consulting services include strategy and corporate solutions, information technology solutions, finance solutions, human resource solutions, supply chain solutions, customer and channel solutions, and merger integration advisory. Through its other divisions, the firm offers services, including turnaround management, interim and crisis management, performance improvement, creditor advisory, corporate finance, transaction advisory, commercial and not-for-profit health care, public sector, dispute analysis and forensics, and real estate and tax advisory. Its experts consult in a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, retail, health care, transportation, apparel, technology, manufacturing, financial services, power and utilities, and the public sector.
This company is most well known for its corporate turnaround expertise, and they have assisted well-known companies including Interstate Bakeries (famous for Wonder Bread and Twinkies), hospital chain HealthSouth, and denim giant Levi Strauss. As one of the firm’s founders put it, “We come to companies at their worst moments in life, and we save them.”
