hey ass, you know nothing about paterno. he is paid 500K a year at a job he has held for 40 years while most other similar coaching jobs pay upwards of 2mil a year. So, as to the "enough with being old"~he is a legend and "the sucking"- his is on the list of college coaches with the most wins, ever.

Let me be the FIRST to say, Billy Merck sucks!

9:34:

He may be on the list of coaches with most wins of all time, but it is pretty absurd to think that a guy who is too old to even stand on the sidelines still deserves to get paid $500,000.

Everyone knows that Paterno's assistants run that team. Its a joke to think otherwise.

As for the sucking, Since 2000, Penn State only has 1 season with less than 4 losses, and in 1998 and 1999, they had 3 losses.

Thats not that great in terms of college football, especially when you are coached by such a "legend."

A thousand curses on any Paterno blasphemers!!!

As a BigTen fan, I used to think that JoePa should retire, but hell, he's a legend and the school should pay him 'till he's done.

Besides, I have this theory that he's waiting for Bobby Bowden to retire so he can retire as the winningest college football coach of all time. We'll have to wait and see.

JoePa has earned the right to leave on his own terms. and $500k is a pittance relative to the value (monetary and otherwise) he's brought to PSU over the past four decades. most college coaches are in it only for themselves, changing schools and breaking contracts as it suits them. Paterno has been a leader not only to his players, but to his community as well. we'll never see someone like him again.

Wow, you're still hanging around this blog, Merck? Why don't you do us a favor and retire already? Seriously; it's enough already with the being not funny and the sucking.

Merck's posts generally strike me as distasteful and I am usually somewhat annoyed by them, but this anti-Paterno comment is an outright abhorrence.

He is making far less than most coaches out there. Granted, he doesn't do much as far as actual coaching but his presence alone is at least worth his salary in terms of recruitment, morale, and "goodwill," so to speak.

The guy is what, 81? Let him stick it out for his last few years and die on the sidelines if that's what he wants. He deserves at least that much.

Let's see how good of a lawyer/blogger/general sarcasmist you are when you are his age.

Do not let the age fool you, Joepa runs that team! Even at his age, he has more vigor that the coaches half his age and is a schematic genius. For example, a week after his leg was broken when 2 players ran into him, he was back on the field coaching. Rather paradoxical that the same minions that blast his age would call out of work for the sniffles.

For the unathletic nerds who have never walked at a brisk pace let alone done anything borderline athletic, football is a game of intense strategy and schemes. As such, Joepa, and his years of coaching experience, directly impact every weeks game plan and approach. Not to mention that he is a classy guy who runs a top-notch program-cleanly. Don’t forget that he has remained at penn state for about 40 years as a coach–a job that has an average turn over of 2-4 years. You desk jockeys could learn something from him. Give the guy his respect.

P.s. Firrrrrst biotches! See supra first post.

The insane amount of money that man has brought to little old State College more than justifies his salary. He helped raise $13.75 million for a new library and donated plenty of his own money as well. Football coaches don't need to do those things, unless you're awesome... like JoePa.

Perhaps you misunderstood my motives in posting about JoePa.

I do think he is a great coach, and I do think he has done wonders for both PSU and the entire Western PA region, but don't you think there comes a time when he needs to retire? And isn't that time rapidly approaching (if not already past us?)

At some point, despite all the good he has done for the school, the state, and the game, don't you think he is simply holding this team back?

He isn't a force as a recruiter anymore. He has been to only one BCS bowl game since 1995 and has only one Big 10 Championship since 1995.

Perhaps you do not measure PSU's success by the amount of BCS games they have been to or the amount of Big 10 titles they have won, but in a "what have you done for me lately" world, JoePa is certainly not your man.

No disrespect to you, or him, but it is time for him to go. Since they can't fire him, he needs to retire.

I think Billy went to UGA so anything that doesn't bark he doesn't like. So I wouldn't take anything he says as important.

Wow Merck, I actually thought you were getting better, that you had maybe learned a thing or two about blogging. But a shot at joepa?? thats low. get a real job Merck, go bill some hours you tool.

Merck:

Fuck off.

Your cheap shot at JoePa was not only grammatically bizarre ("Wow, you're hanging around for that couch change Paterno?" WTF?) but unawrranted.

Paterno runs a football program with class - something sadly lacking in most other college programs these days. And he earns every penny of his salary and then some. As the previous posters have mentioned, the amount of money he has helped raise for PSU, not to mention the good publicity for the college, is far more valuable than the half-mil a year he gets.

Yeah, he's not as active as he used to be. So what? He's still running the team. You wouldn't expect the CEO of Chrysler to be out on the assembly line supervising workers, would you?

I used to stick up for you against all the haters on this blog - but now I think they were right.

In defense of JoePa accepting that salary, he may have some "noble" motives, but the fact is, he is not being "selfless".

First, by his own admission, he makes more than the 512 thousand estimated in the article.

Second, his additional compensation almost certainly includes guaranteed appearances on sports-related tv/radio shows, personal appearances, etc., which likely pay several hundred thousand dollars (and are likely arranged by the University itself).

Third, as repeatedly discussed by NY lawyers on this board, cost-of-living is a factor. Near Penn State, there simply are not houses that cost more than 1 million, and 750k gets you a new (or nearly new) house with 4000 -5000 sq feet with substantial acreage.
