The Eyes of the Law: Justice Scalia at Georgetown

Our latest legal celebrity sighting: Justice Antonin Scalia, spotted at Georgetown University Law Center. He is believed to have been at GULC to speak to a con law class.

Of the current justices on the Supreme Court, Justice Scalia clearly inspires the greatest amount of fanatical devotion. How many other justices have their own fansite?

(Okay, Justice Thomas has one too. And with his new, bestselling memoir, My Grandfather's Son, he's definitely building a fan base. But we still think that Justice Scalia has the most groupies of any member of the SCOTUS.)

And how many other justices are asked to sign students' laptop computers? This student, who had his laptop autographed by AS, was proudly displaying his computer to his classmates, saying that he felt Scalia had "blessed" his laptop for the upcoming exams.

With such a large and devoted following, we have a feeling that Justice Scalia's forthcoming book -- Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges, a guide to persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy, which he's writing together with legendary legal writing teacher Bryan Garner -- will sell pretty well too.

Is the guy in the pic wearing a Cumberland t-shirt? Maybe his undergrad school? Scalia must have been sooooo impressed.

maybe it's a timberlake shirt... in which case, how could Scalia not have been impressed?

100,000k equals 100 million. I'm going out on a limb and guessing that 10:50(2) does not have ready access to that kind of scratch.

I went to GULC and we had the currently scandal-engulfed Judge Kent come speak to my property class. He was entertaining, but he also came off as crazy. Not that I agree with most of Justice Scalia's opinions, but it would have been super interesting to hear him speak as well. Which Con Law section was it?

This dork has never felt the warm embrace of a fine woman. Hot man ass, however, he is intimately familiar with.

Lat,

Big law firm "holiday" cards are coming out. You should have a contest to show which law firm's card is the biggest war on Christmas. It's more than just saying holidays instead of Christmas. Many law firms seem to be afraid to even have a picture on the card let alone the colors red and green. Some even have a bunch of different languages.

The sad part is the firms are not being ironic with their ultra-PC cards.

It was Con Law 2 w/professor Bloch. A few 1Ls snuck in. He wasn't bad, got a lot of softballs, did some semi-entertaining/really odd voice interpretations.

Commenters: Back off. This man is a GULC 1L legend, in a good way.

If you must snark, and I'm sure you must, then snark the rest of the 1L class for finding him a legend, in a good way.

Scalia Fanboy = legendary douche

11:13 -- Why would it even make *sense* for a firm to prefer to use the term "Christmas" rather than "Holidays," when it knows that the card will go to a lot of people who don't celebrate Christmas? Doesn't it make practical and economic sense to include as many people as possible?

25 Posted by GULC Alum | Permalink Thursday, November 29, 2007 11:25 AM

When I was at GULC, Scalia came to speak to my Soverign Immunity seminar, which was co-taught by a Federal Circuit Judge. I think the Judge and the Justice played golf together or something. In any event, I really had to hold my tongue not to burst out after Scalia called substantive due process "a crock."

Scalia is friends with Prof. Bloch and regularly speaks to her Con Law classes. I saw him when I was there - he was witty and hilarious.

Also, GULC is Asperger's central so don't expect much coolness.
