A Few Law Firm Holiday Cards

Kwanzaa Happy Kwanzaa Above the Law blog.jpgWe see that the WSJ Law Blog has beaten us to this subject. We’ve had this post ready for a while; unfortunately, technical difficulties have prevented us from posting for the past hour.

The WSJ folks have already presented some of the cards that we were going to cover. But here are a few firm holiday greetings not on their list (click on each firm name to see their card):

1. Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft: Trying too hard, sort of like their Wild West-themed holiday party? Then again, it must have been fun for those underemployed structured finance associates to try their hand at web design.

2. Dewey & LeBoeuf: Not trying hard enough? This may take subtlety and understatement too far, to the point of banality. But at least the card’s not signed “Sieg heil.”

3. Schottenstein Zox & Dunn: This firm, which has about 110 lawyers in three Ohio cities and Raleigh, NC, explains in its cover email that it “strive[s] to approach life and law from a different perspective.” So they designed not one but TWO holiday videos. You can view them, and vote for your favorite, over here. We’re partial to the video of the skateboarding attorneys, which must have been a challenge to film.

For each vote, the firm will donate $1 to Project Mentor Big Brother Big Sisters of Central Ohio. How nice! (But it’s too bad you have to provide your name and email address to vote, which will probably depress voter turnout.)

Update: It appears that the WSJ’s link to the holiday card of Grodsky & Olecki, an entertainment law boutique, is broken. We’ve posted the card, which we also received, after the jump.

baker botts sent out email holiday cards rather than paper cards. the email says baker botts will donate the money they saved to one of four charities. the recipient can select which charity by clicking on links embedded in the email. i thought it was really cool.

we are getting tired of the excuses Lat. Why don't you just put a note at the top of the blog saying "This Blog Blows"?

Pillsbury's was rather nice: non-denominational (shades of blue with white; pinecone cutout) and on recycled paper.

3:00 -

It's not Lat's fault if the company he works for is too cheap to buy new servers.

If you are "tired" of reading then ATL, then don't read it. 'Nuff said.

My firm does the e-mail card thing - I don't feel the holiday spirit of it so I send out my own. I mean do people really read the e-mail cards?

i wonder if i am going to get a christmas card from the firm that didn't give me an offer at the end of the summer. i imagine it would read something like:

dear 3L,

thanks for all your hard work last summer. it was super fun to hang out with you and make you think that you actually fit in here. sorry about that whole you're doing a great job to your face thing. it was wrong of us to trick you into thinking you were worthy of such an enormous salary.

also, could you please stop telling everyone at your school that our firm is full of lying manipulative douche bags. no one accepted our offer to join us next summer and that makes us super sad.

anyways, happy holidays. enjoy your looking for jobs over break.

hugs and kisses,

big bad law firm

You know DB has the same initials as douchebag ("DB")? Glad I don't work at that vaginal sanitizing work place.

I actually like cwt's card! I even sent it to my mom. plus, instead of paper cards the firm donates money to Kasiisi Porridge Project of Uganda and American Cancer Society. Hot! I secretly wish it incorporated Real Deal in there somehow.

I can't even believe that SZD skateboarding video. Are they out of their minds. I'd be so embarrassholed if I worked there. What an effing joke that was.

And the stand-in skaters sucked too. Nothing more than nollies and manuals - PLEASE. At least go over the top and show some real skating.

Does anyone know of any good skate shops in the First State?

I think the advertising done at the end of the CWT e-card gets them the revenue they need to fill in the gap of lost revenues from subprime MBS deals.

I find it kind of humorous to click through all these elaborate e-cards, and see the firms go to such great lengths to avoid saying the word "Christmas".

It's okay, you can say the word "Christmas". It won't bite. Everyone knows that the only reason you're sending a card out is because it's Christmas time. And, while you're at it, you can wish people a Happy Hannukah, if you're feeling particularly inclusive. (But not Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa drives me bonkers - it's something invented 30 years ago by a crazy felon who tortured women.)

avatar
36 Posted by Fed Soc | Permalink Wednesday, December 19, 2007 11:51 PM

What drives me crazy is that liberals keep arguing that there is no such thing as a War on Christmas despite all evidence to the contrary. If they want to argue that the religious component of Christmas should indeed disappear or that it shouldn't matter to Christians what the holiday is called because it already lost its meaning, fine; I completely disagree, but this is within the realm of what liberals can reasonably argue. But many liberals go further and say that conservative concerns over the War on Christmas are not only misplaced, but also ridiculous non-issues; these leftists dismiss the argument in its entirety.

And to come back to the topic of the post, is there not a single firm that says "Merry Christmas" in its Christmas card? Has it really gotten that bad in NYC law firms?

10:26 and 11:51,

Nobody's stopping you from calling it Christmas. As for me, I prefer to observe the *true* meaning of the holiday, the pre-Christian Winter Solstice.

Happy Saturnalia!
