When $250,000 Is Not Enough

justices of Supreme Court SCOTUS portrait ebay Above the Law blog.jpgThe signing bonuses for U.S. Supreme Court clerks who join law firms after their clerkships have reached $250,000. But if a cool quarter million, on top of a third-year associate's salary, is not enough, former SCOTUS clerks can supplement their income by hawking the traditional departure gift -- a photograph of the nine justices, autographed by each one -- on eBay.

(The Court portrait currently on sale on eBay is not being sold by a former Supreme Court clerk, though. It's "from the estate of the late Michael Rodak, Jr., who was the Clerk of the United States Supreme Court from 1972 to 1981." The bidding is currently at $1,825. But if that strikes you as high, it's not high enough -- the seller's reserve price has not yet been met.)

Yeah, well Scalia doesn't show up in photos or mirrors, so his part of the departing gifts doesn't mean much.

Also, if you say "habeas" three times in a Gitmo bathroom with the lights off, you get the functional equivalent of habeus.

IMO to some SCOUTS groupie with disposable income this would not be a ridiculous purchase.

On the other hand, I don't care who you are, you're retarded for paying $4-500 for the stupid SCOTUS bobbleheads my professor has made.

Who goes to $300,000 first for SCt bonuses? I'm saying Latham is the darkhorse to go first--lots of clerks this year, but fear of the Supreme Court pipeline drying up.

A notable exception to the "Special Bonus" seems to be Morrison & Foerster - New York. Has anyone heard if they plan to offer this bonus?

Recently, I was asked by a friend of mine (who is at a top 5 law school) what I thought of the law firms with which I work. I do have some views, but I also wanted to do some internet research and ran into the Morrison & Foerster "Special Bonus" question. Interesting ... I had initially thought about recommending the firm, but this throws a wrench into that plan.

All that said, I'm not convinced that my internet research is exhaustive enough to figure out if Morrison & Foerster pays fairly and values its employees as much as other firms do. While not the only criteria for picking a law firm, pay is certainly important.

Can someone let me know if Morrison & Foerster has announced the "Special Bonus"? If not, what do others think of this?

11:14, did you really need to use 500 words to ask a simple question?
