Judge of the Day: Colleen Hartl

Colleen Hartl Judge Colleen Hartl Above the Law blog.jpgMunicipal court is not exactly the pinnacle of judicial office. But we think that Colleen Hartl, until recently a (rather attractive) municipal court judge in Washington state, is still a worthy Judge of the Day. From the AP:

A Federal Way [that’s a WA city name] Municipal Court judge has resigned after hosting a holiday party at which she claimed to be having an affair with a public defender who routinely appeared in her court.

Judge Colleen Hartl quit Dec. 19, less than a week after telling her guests — including five court employees — that she had sex with public defender Sean Cecil and displaying a text message in which he complimented how she looked in “tight jeans,” Michael Morgan, the court’s presiding judge, said Wednesday.

So she’s proud about how good her butt looks in tight jeans. What’s so wrong with that?

Even after admitting the affair at the Friday night party, Hartl showed up for work the next Monday morning and presided over several cases handled by Cecil, Morgan said. At lunchtime that day, Morgan — who attended the party but left before Hartl’s admission — was advised of the relationship by a court staff member who witnessed the statement. Morgan suggested that Hartl not sit on any cases that afternoon, and she resigned two days later.

Judge Hartl, we like your style.

"So Her Honor text-messaged a boy to tell him his butt looked cute in those jeans. If Colleen Hartl a judge, or a 14-year-old girl?"

No, actually, according to the quote, *he* texted *her*.

Anyone have a picture of Her Honor from which the veracity of counsel's representation to the Court might be ascertained?

No, the boy text-messaged her to tell her how good she looked in jeans. Awesome reading comprehension.

Guys back at my TTT law school became traffic ticket judges all the time. Of course none of them would do her, because she's "rather attractive" only by troll standards.

This should provide months of amusement, as well as fees for the lawyers defending these clowns in the various ethics investigations sure to arise. The judge's husband, also an attorney, would seem to have grounds for divorce, too, if he's so inclined.

This quote from the article is hilarious:
"According to Morgan, the 46-year-old Hartl claims to have misspoke during the party. The judge told Morgan that she was drunk and denied having sex with Cecil. However, Hartl admitted to an 'inappropriate' relationship, stating she had flirted with Cecil and the two had been out on a date."

She "misspoke" about whether she had sex with him??
To borrow a page from the "frat stud" playbook, girls in my high school used to misspeak all the time and say they had had sex with a guy when all they really meant was they had flirted a bit and maybe gone on a date with him. It was no big deal.

Hey- Why did this story come out 3 weeks after her resignation? Could Mr. Morgan possibly have an agenda? How likely is it that a fairly bright person (assuming one to graduate law school had a bit of intelligence) would brag at a party she is hosting with coworkers and probably her spouse in attendance that she slept with a presenting attorney. We haven't heard the whole story! I for one would presume an unfortunate comment made under the influence and taken out of context. Did all 5 coworkers who attended the party hear the same "bragging" ? Could perhaps the the good samaritan who reported it have missinterpreted what was said. Why would Judge Hartl show up to work as if nothing was innapropriate if she had truly flushed her career in such a public manner. I think there is much more to this story.

I know Morgan personally. You get on his bad side he does this. I'm sure there's more to this story. More time and energy needs to be spent on investing Morgan and why we are allowing him to destroy lifes... ask the people that work with him. I was one of them and I had to quit and I wasn't even on his bad side but I saw what he did to those that were. This is really none of of our business. We're so interested in other peoples baggage that we don't even try to stop the people that come out looking like hero's when they are destroying others. I don't know the judge that resigned (I agree she needed to do that) but I also think the public is look at it one sided
