This Won't Help the Reputation of Trial Lawyers

runaway groom trial lawyer Above the Law blog.jpgLast week, our friends over at the WSJ Law Blog asked: "Why do 'trial lawyers' have such a bad name?"

One possible answer: Because they abandon their brides at the altar. From the Miami Herald:

Walk-away groom: Jim Ferraro, multimillionaire trial lawyer.

Ferraro, set to marry prominent real estate broker Patricia Delinois on Friday in a formal ceremony at Fisher Island's Vanderbilt Mansion, jilted her -- at the altar -- as they were about to exchange vows before 75 to 80 guests....

After five years of dating, the couple were to finally tie the knot. But, says Ferraro: 'When it was time to say `I do,' I just said, 'I love her but I just can't do this.' '' He walked away, flanked by sons James, 21, Andrew, 18, and daughter Alexis, 14.

The audience gasped. Delinois' sister, Ingrid Long, told off Ferraro -- loudly. Some say she yelled, ''You dog!'' Not so, Long says. ``I called him a snake. I think I even called him a few other things. I was trying very hard not to curse, but I think a few curse words came out.''

Says Ferraro: ``It was dramatic.''

Trial lawyers can be such drama queens. Maybe they get addicted to making audiences gasp -- you know, that whole "Perry Mason" thing. It appears that finances weren't behind the cancellation:

The issue, [Ferraro] says, was not money. ''We did have a prenup.'' She is CEO of Century 21 Premier Elite Realty. He has law offices in Miami and Cleveland, owns the Cleveland Gladiators arena football team, has a private jet, and built a 21,000-square-foot compound in Martha's Vineyard -- with 14 bedrooms, tennis court, basketball court, nine-hole putting green, movie theater, and weight and cardio gyms.

This time, Ferraro figures, their romance is done for good. ``She probably doesn't ever want to talk to me again.''

ferraro's law partner in cleveland, michael kelley, died on a flight to the OSU-ND fiesta bowl in 2006.

now, ferraro is involved in litigation with kelley's widow in common pleas court in cleveland over the break-up of the firm and how its billions in fees should be shared. they each lay claim to 100% of the fees. they also are fighting about the firm jet, which ferraro claims belongs to his Nevada arena league football team.

both have fired and re-hired and fired attorneys. these people are crathy.

He needs to be shot in the face; not for this move (which is probably good based on her terrible silicone tits and awful appearance) but for wearing the formal wear so deplorable it circles around ironically bad and back to awful.

Google pics of this pair of miscreants and it explains why I don't visit miami, ever. Well, that and Will Smith's "song".

the last paragrph of the article is hilarious. her prior marriage broke up when her husband was charged with kidnapping because the police caught him with his ex-girlfriend stuffed in his trunk.

Lat,

I am a regular reader of ATL, am not a hater, and think most complaints about post selection are crap. That said, this story is a real stretch. Talk about a tenuious connection to the legal profession.

Good for you, Jim! I wish I'd had the balls to do that when I was standing at the altar, thinking what a terrible idea this was.

Hey 12:45--Don't fret. Many of your law-firm colleagues feel the same way. Just continue to dull the pain with a few martinis each night. Then, after the wife squeezes out a couple of kids, you can divorce her, guaranteeing that said kids will grow up permanently scarred from the trauma of the split. You can take refuge in work (~ 2,700 billables) and alcohol. Good times!

12:47 -- if you ditch the bride at the altar, it's pretty bad form to ask for the ring back.

Better it happened now then a couple of years down the road, with everyone miserable, and a nasty, drawn-out divorce for both parties.

I interviewed Ferraro for a job at a corporate law firm in about 1983. We did not make him an offer. I cannot argue with his net worth compared to mine. I practice in finance. I think trial lawyers make a lot of money at their business, and some are jealous. Finance lawyers make money when they move into i-banking.

Yikes!
The guy has the balls to wear a god-awful blood-red tuxedo shirt.

In public.

TWICE?!?

That must illustrate some kind of poor judgment...go figure.

If you’ve written a rude post on this blog, it is obvious that you don’t know the family. Jim and Patricia married shortly after he left her at the altar and are extremely happy. Jim, Patricia, James, Andrew, Brandon, and Alexis are really just one big family. If you don’t know the family and you are posting rude comments about them I feel very sorry for you. You’re missing out on knowing some of the nicest people.
