ATL Seeks An Asia Columnist

Asia Asian law blogger blawg Above the Law blog.jpgIn light of the explosive economic growth of China and the Far East, many top U.S. and global law firms are trying to figure out how to enter Asia. And Above the Law is, too.

We're looking for someone to write a weekly column for us about practicing law in Asia. It would be similar to ATL's other columns -- e.g., Legal Eagle Wedding Watch, Sports and the Law -- but centered on what it's like to be a lawyer in Asia.

The ideal candidate would be someone currently practicing in Asia. But former and future Asia practitioners would also be considered, as long as they can write knowledgeably about working in Asia, have a network of sources on the ground, etc.

The columnist can write under a pseudonym if desired. The gig comes with pay (a modest stipend). It's an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to do some fun, non-legal writing, or to share their expat experience with ATL's large and growing readership.

If you might be interested, please email us (subject line: "Asia column"). Please include a brief bio and a discussion of your vision for the column, including possible topics to write about if you have some in mind.

Thanks! We look forward to reviewing your applications.

"It would be similar to ATL's other columns -- e.g., Legal Eagle Wedding Watch..."

In other words, the column will sometimes go on 3 month vacations with no explanation?

Lat,

Can you do a post about US law firms with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc? Please focus on COLA adjustments for going overseas from a US office.

99% of the foreign lawyers in china are retarded, racist, or mind-blowingly sleazy, and the majority of them have blogs devoted to their thoughts on 'the expat life' already. that concept is so overdone.

@beijing,

How can you say this? I know of only two China law blogs (China Law Blog and China Hearsay) written by foreign lawyers in China and both of these blogs are excellent. To what blog were you referring?

@Shanghai

ok, i should qualify my last assertion - there are an assload of china blogs (not necessarily written by lawyers) filled with racist or outright ignorant prose that waxes lyrical about how interesting and frustrating living in china is and repeats the same crap over and over about bridging cultural differences. i make it a point not to read china blogs anymore but one that comes off the top of my head is lost laowai.

i don't know the writer of china hearsay personally but i certainly know of him from people who know him very closely and he seems to be the exception to the rule - married and mild. however, yeah... i'm engaged, but when one of my female coworkers started here one of the partners specifically said that being a woman in china is extremely because the men here suck and are only practicing in china because they were professionally disadvantaged (like they didn't pass the US bar or they came from TTT law school purgatory in the US). obviously this doesn't apply to people listed on the china office websites of the BigLaw firms. to date, his observations have rang true.

LMAO @ "ignorant prose that waxes lyrical"

in chinese, we say "50 steps laughing at 100 steps"; in english, the pot calling the kettle black.

ditto for your racist comments.
