Glitter and Be Gay, at WLRK

Per Se Thomas Keller Wachtell Lipton Above the Law blog.jpgIt's Friday afternoon, and things are kinda slow. So please forgive the randomness.

Remember Kirkland & Ellis's big gay party from last month, featuring cocktails and hors d’ouevres, but open only to LGBT lawyers? A source at our former firm writes:

Hors d'ouevres? That's nothing! At Wachtell Lipton, the gay partners (and whatever associates/summers are out and proud) go to a verrry nice dinner every year. Last year it was at Per Se.

Magnificent. We've been to Per Se -- on our own dime, not Wachtell's -- and it lives up to the hype.

So if you're summering at WLRK, say that you're gay (whether you are or not). You can always "change your mind" when you return to school in the fall; sexuality is fluid. And Per Se's salmon tartare cornets are to die for!

As a self-proclaimed fag hag, I would be upset if I weren't allowed to tag along. Gays are fun. Sometimes I wish I were a gay man, not a lesbian, but a gay man. I'll make a note to discuss this with my therapist.

Wow what an example we are setting to future lawyers/students. I went to the two most liberal schools on Earth...now if I can manage to afford kids I am going to make sure that they are homosexual, multi-ethnic, multi-national, albino vegans who played the xylophone in their undergrad marching band. All so they can get into BigLaw. Only an East Coast liberal could pull that off.

This also guarantees entry to the NYT wedding announcements.

Guys at my high school used to pretend to be gay so they could attend gay dinners at over-hyped restaurants all the time, it was no big deal.

"heteros need to eat too!!"

True, but one should never help them - it just keeps them alive and breeding.

Have to agree with 4:18. I am a big "foodie". Has been a pasion of mine. Have been to Per Se 3 times and French Laundry 4 times. Per Se while excellent is not as good as the French Laundry. (By the way, saw Keller at the FL last year and he admitted as much - but said it was in part due to the fact that with only 17 tables at the FL it was easier to stay top flight every night (and lunch Fri - Sun).

Speaking of Wachtell, too bad associates from the firm aren't eligible for the "job of the week", which requires that you have experience at an AmLaw 100 firm, which Wachtell is not (by revenues or by # lawyers). Did they mean Vault 100 firm?

The "whole Yale thing"?

Insert response here.

Fact: Wachtell employs a fleet of trained servants to service attorney needs. These servants are colloquially called "Fernandos." While the Fernandos are mostly used for mere errand-running (e.g., picking up gym clothes), many of them are gay, and several of them have been known to go much farther for cute young associates and powerful partners.

5:57, Wachtell IS an Am Law 100 firm. See the latest Am Law 100 rankings, in the May 2007 issue of the American Lawyer.

They're #52 by revenue (which is how the Am Law 100 are ranked). More importantly, they are #2 by profits per partner (usually #1 in PPP, but Wiley Rein had the big Blackberry payout this year).

Thank you, 7:58. I have added Wachtell to my OCI to-do list for next year.
