Lawyer of the Day: Jack Thompson

Jack Thompson crazy Florida lawyer Above the Law blog.jpgFlorida lawyer Jack Thompson, who is completely crazy somewhat colorful, has surfaced in these pages before. But he has never been an ATL Lawyer of the Day.

With this post, we officially bestow the honor upon him. From Game Politics:

[T]he Florida Supreme Court alleged [last] week that controversial Miami attorney Jack Thompson has "abused the legal system by submitting numerous frivolous and inappropriate filings in this Court."...

The Daily Business Review reports that a December document was specifically mentioned in the Court's show cause order (PDF) to Thompson:

"The court described one of Thompson's recent filings in detail. [Thompson] dubbed it a 'children's picture book for adults,' interspersing images with text in his motion due to 'the court's inability to comprehend' his arguments."

Seriously. Check part of the filing out by clicking here (Word document). It sure is purdy, ain't it?

Despite that order to show cause from the Florida Supremes, Thompson is unrepentant. As he told the Daily Business Review:

I have a right to file anything I want with the court. It is beyond bizarre that they think they can tell me I can't seek relief. They can deny relief, but they can't tell me I can't seek relief.

So go ahead, Jack, and file "anything [you] want" with the court. Remember the time you filed gay porn in federal court? That went over really well...

They are going to hang that dude high. Seems like that order to show cause was his final chance to get out of this without serious repercussions, and he squandered it.

I didn't get any pictures in the word doc.

What a moron. The document is crap because sometimes he substitutes pictures for text and sometimes he doesn't. If you're going to be a smartass, at least try to be smart.

Also note the title:
"RESPONDENT’S VERIFIED MOTION TO VACATE THIS COURT’S
TWO ORDERS ON THE BASIS OF THE FLORID BAR’S FRAUD"

Florid bar-- typo or plausible deniability?

4:34, The pictures will pop up after you've stopped scrolling for a couple of seconds.

I think he is quite funny. But who is Rumpole?

The "man with no eyes" didn't say, "what we have here is a failure to communicate." Strother Martin's character did.

Right on 4:44 pm. "Captain, Road Prison #36," as played by the inimitable Strother Martin, said the line in question - not the more colorful "Man With No Eyes" (to my knowledge, the "Man With No Eyes" didn't have any lines in the whole movie). That type of factual inaccuracy, in and of itself, makes the filing frivolous in my mind...

This is the kind of guy that spends all day doing these motions and filings, then goes home and plays World of Warcraft for a few hours before jacking himself to sleep looking at gay porn.

That document reminds me of criminal pro se ramblings. Why on earth has this guy not been disbarred?

avatar
11 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, February 25, 2008 5:29 PM

The more important point, 5:18, is that he got barred in the first place.

For all you 3Ls about to start maybe sorta consider begin worrying about the Bar (in a few months)... don't. If this idiot can get admitted, so can you.

I see by 5:09's post that homophobia is alive and well.

SORRY, BUT THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING FILINGS I'VE EVER READ. WHY NOT ISSUE A LOCAL RULE REQUIRING ALL PAPERS FILED WITH THE COURT TO INCLUDE CLIP ART ILLUSTRATIONS?

What a pathetic nut.

A few year back i used to work pt at a gamestop (while getting my undergrad, the great days before law school) and this dude would come to the store all the time with his kid. He would rant and rave about Grand Theft Auto and any other game he didnt like, then get mad at the employees for selling them. He would also tell us how he we send his little kid (couldnt be older than 12 at the time) into best buy to buy M rated games, and once his son bought them he would run in and confront the manager.

Anyway, still pretty funny

What's the deal with the Nazi pictures and the integrated bar association rant?

17 Posted by anon | Permalink Monday, February 25, 2008 7:49 PM

I can see by 5:39's post that people jumping on the homophobia wagon too fast without realizing the meaning of snark and without any idea who Jack Thompson is and what industry he has targeted is alive and well and kicking (or is the the knee jerking).

Most cogent argument for disbarment.
Also, note copyright violations.

I love this blog and find a lot of the posters, but today I'm feeling human and I just feel bad for this man. He's clearly sick and needs help. Passion and defiance in one thing, but self-destruction and ranting in front of your child is another. See 7:28.

9:03 should read, "I love this blog and find a lot of the posters hilarious, but . . . ." and "Passion and defiance is one thing, but . . ." I hadn't had my caffeine yet. I promise my work product isn't quite that shoddy.

Thanks for picking this up on ATL. I've been a lawyer for 13 years now and a gamer for my whole life, so I've seen good ol' Jack doing his thing for quite a while now. In my opinion, his mental health has seriously declined over the years - he used to make some good points and, while I disagreed with his positions, he would at least get people talking; now he is just a joke of a man and will soon be on Fox News as "Jack Thompson, former lawyer" rather than "Jack Thompson, school shooting expert" (look it up - Fox put him on the morning after the shootings in Illinois - so much for vetting your "experts" eh Fox?)
