the many uses of craigslist
Faced with a challenging job market, law school students are turning to the web. See, e.g., 3L for Hire.
And now they're advertising on... craigslist? Well, if it's good enough for law firms -- at least the kind that require the ability to lift 25 pounds -- it's good enough for students, too.
From the Austin craigslist:
I am a second year law student seeking a summer opportunity with a DFW medium/small law firm. I attend Texas Wesleyan University and maintain a 3.22 GPA. I am a hard working, and dedicated individual. I wil be happy to provide my transcript and resume upon request.Thank you.
Maybe this student should try posting in the "missed connections" section of craigslist? lawstudent4job - 25 - (austin).
Craigslist may work better for finding a personal relationship (or selling used furniture). Check out this ad:
Law Student seeks Cinderella - 25.I am a 25 year old law student. 5' 9". 160 lbs. Blonde hair, blue eyes, from Kansas City. I am single, never been married, no children, and have a Bachelor of Science degree, a Masters of Arts degree, and am a first year law student. I am looking to meet a woman and take her to a formal event for my law school called "Barristers Ball" (Essentially a Law School Prom). Dinner, drinks, and dancing will be provided at no cost to you. I am just looking for a lovely lady to take to the event for "Arm-Candy." Responses must include an "Actual" full body photo of yourself and you must be willing to meet sometime soon on the weekend for drinks. I do enjoy drinking and I smoke occasionally when I drink. If this bothers you...please do not respond. Please Note: The child in the photo is not mine (It is my Nephew)...
We understand that the student in question is at the University of Miami -- a law school that has provided ample ATL fodder. Click here, then scroll down, to review UM's past exploits.

I use, too many commas.
no need for the comma after "hard working"
I had no doubt that each comment preceding my own would knock that d-bag's comma use. Thanks guys, for not letting me down.
How is this noteworthy? You see these fairly regularly. Yes, it's foolish to think you'll get any type of response to this type of ad, but I've seen it many times before.
Does this not show that the market is not really as great as these blogs make them out to be?
Oh:
And anyone who posts on Craigslist looking for "arm candy" for barristers is a d-bag.

Seriously, Lat - get rid of those damn harelip ads. They freak people out.
Law Student Seeking Cinderella...
...so she can sue Prince Charming for conversion of property. She wants her glass slipper back, plus damages, and 57 years of accured interest, and emotional damages for inappropriately placed and superfluous commas by the DFW dude.
9:46-
Anyone who attends Barristers is a douchbag.
I saw law kids enough in class. I had other friends to party with outside of class.
Also from craigslist (via DealBreaker this AM):
"Hi. I am a cute (former cheerleader/drum majorette in high school) 5-2. 111 lbs, light brown hair and green eyes. In my 20's I had an on-and-off boyfriend but I got tired of him, especially after my experience with a fast-lane Wall Street guy.
After we started dating (I only found out later he was sneaking out on his wife, saying he was working late) he convinced me to practice my baton skills on his back with some floggers he'd brought along (how convenient).
I would like to find another hedge fund or similar kind of guy to practice my flogging on. I can travel and also have a beautiful rural setting with a heated play-space where I like to practice."
Fund managers have way more fun than lawyers.
The UT 2L's ad is not a commentary on the legal market. He's looking for a decent job at firms that generally don't hire 2Ls and and is near the bottom third of his class (3.33 is the 50% mark at UT).
LAT--Do we need to take out a Craigslist ad to get some notice and threads?
10:06 - 2L is not from UT, he's from Texas Wesleyan, a school that sounds made-up. 3.22 at a Tier 4 dump shouldn't get anyone's blood racing.
This guy does NOT go to UT.
"Does this not show that the market is not really as great as these blogs make it out to be?"
A piece of anecdotal evidence, e.g., a single craigslist ad, is conclusive of nothing except its own capacity to exist. So no, it doesn't really show anything.
10:06---He goes to Texas Wesleyan, not UT. Unlike UT, they don't inflate grades, so a 3.22 is probably top 25-33%.
This guy needs a job because TWU is the worst law school in the south. For example, although it's so close to Dallas, try to find ONE TWU grad in a major Dallas law firm. You won't. In fact, try to find one in a medium sized firm or a smaller firm in Dallas.
So this guy's post isn't that surprising. I hope he finds a job through alternative methods because no one told him the truth about TWU 2 years ago when he needed the tip.
There's a new one up!

10:34, now who is calling the kettle black?
Texas Wesleyan University and University of Texas (aka UT) are the same school. UT was formerly known as Texas Wesleyan, and there are some who still insist on calling it Texas Wesleyan. Whatever you want to call it, it's still a TTT.
All you law kids are feisty for a Friday morning! Or is it the impending prospect of unemployment and law school debt that has you grouchy? (And yes, the job market is really that shiotty right now. It's called a recession people.)
10:40: please tell me you are purposely propagating such incorrect information in an attempt at light-hearted irony?
UT...Texas Wesleyan, what's the difference?
They are NOT the same school:

TEXAS SUCKS!
Perhaps these two young men fit the law school profile of social retardation and a desire to upstage their colleagues despite their tremendous shortcomings, and were unable to secure companionship through traditional means?
A TWU Law student blogs about her experience:

HAHAHA
What gentleman would actually type out "arm candy"?
11:41,
That is pure gold.
Okay, so the link on 11:41's post is kind of entertaining... but am I the only one who thinks this lady looks more like 84 than 54?
TWU Grandma to 160!
Looks like the curve is between 3.00 and 3.33.

So this guy's top half to top third. From a top-notch institution like Texas Wesleyan, Wachtell should be knocking down his door.
OU!
It's unfortunate that Nancy's blog doesn't allow comments. THAT would be hilarious.
Seems to me that top firms should rely less on what law school you went to and your grades and what school you went to, and more on how willingly you take a good old fashioned cornholing.
I mean, there's probably going to be little difference in the quality of document review by someone who went to Yale vice someone who went to Texass Wesleyan. And if the Texass Wesleyan grad will forego his or her weekends and any semblance of a social or family life for that 160k (and might even do it for 100k), why not go with them? It's not like associates do anything important at Megaconglomeratefirms anyway. Hell, AA's and Paralegals are more valuable.
Chicago Dude,
Do you have good wireless reception under that bridge you are writing from?
We started a new class (with a different professor) this semester. Instead of Torts we now have Criminal Law. Some of the same offenses are viewed as criminally liable rather than (or in addition to) civilly liable. That’s an interesting twist.
God bless her heart for doing what she's doing, but I have to agree, Nancy is looking a lot older than 54 in that photo...maybe she had a lot of kids, and that aged her?
Still, she is so relentlessly upbeat, it would be hard not to like her. Nancy, you go, girl!

the only good thing to ever come out of Texas is ZZ Top.
Not that I even think TWU is anything other than advertised here by some, but there are some Dallas BigTexLaw associates from TWU:
Akin Gump - 2
OK, not that many, but there are a few. None at Baker Botts, Fulbright, V&E or Weil, just after a quick search.
lol
Hey - somebody put up a blog just re: finding a job as a 2L.
http://2LforHire.blogspot.com
I'd rather live in jail than live in Texas.
What a gunner!
