Clerkship Bonus Watch: Jones Day to $50K
We probably won't cover judicial clerkship bonuses quite as closely as we used to, now that Justin Bernold has put together this handy table of clerkship bonus info. But we did want to bring your attention to one development, since several of you emailed us about it. This message is representative:
Just to let you know, JD has just changed their website to reflect a $50K clerkship bonus. Despite all the bad things said about JD on ATL, they are at least keeping pace with clerkship bonuses. Hope this spurs some positive commentary....Thanks for providing a great service to lawyers everywhere!
For ATL's table of clerkship bonuses, which has been corrected to reflect the JD information, click here.
P.S. For the record, we don't think the Jones Day buzz here has been that bad. Sure, there have been some negative comments, but that's true of almost every firm under the sun. And we've heard from Jones Day defenders as well.
Jones Day - Careers - Compensation [Jones Day]

First to get to the office!
Does anyone know anything about Jones Day's west coast offices?
I have an offer from JD in LA. Professor Paterno told me not to take it, he said I would be better off going V5 in NYC. What do you guys think I should do?
Yes, but are they hiring clerks? And where?
the UPenn/Penn State "jokes" just aren't funny anymore (well, they never actually were funny)...get over yourself...
I think Jones Day will get positive buzz when they pay their associates in DC a bonus. It won't hurt them when the folks who used to be in NY move on/forget that JD gave them a special out-of-the-blue no-bonus package a few years ago (which then spurred a mass exodus).
9:28 is just upset that he missed it when fellow Penn State alum Franco Harris spoke at the Levy Center.
9:28 = pissed he got dinged from Penn State Law, Dickinson and missed out on the opportunity to have people confuse his alma mater for PENN
Any idea how biglaw treats former AUSAs upon return from a 3 year stint (2 or more years of biglaw, leave for AUSA, come back to biglaw)? Has anyone had problems getting credit for each AUSA year? Any success negotiating signing bonuses upon return? Seems to me that if a district court clerkship is worth 50,000, AUSA experience is worth far more (leaving recruiting issues aside for a moment).
Bonuses are nice and all, but are they hiring clerks?
How are all the clerks doing in their job search?
I too am over the Penn/Penn State thing. Obviously, some tool was rejected by the top 10, ivy school and is bitter (or was rejected by an individual who attends Penn, or was rejected by an individual who opted instead for someone attending Penn). Or, the tool in question is at the bottom of the class at Penn, has no job, and thus feels betrayed by the career services office (a depressing condition commonly seen at less elite schools).
9:49: I'm a clerk and I'm doing terrible in my job search.
Terrelle Pryor to $190k!
9:52 - Hi. I'm responsible for 3/4 of the UPENN / Penn State initial posts here. I am an alum, College '04 and just think it's hysterical that people (PENN people) get so worked up about it. It's kind of like how we laughed at all the kids in "not penn state" t-shirts during undergrad.
I think it's funny. As long as people keep taking the bait, I'll keep casting.
9:58 - which legal market(s) have you been trying?
JD Chicago - actively looking for clerks.
10:01 - Do you know JoPa? What's he like in class? I've heard you shouldn't take him until third year so that he'll remember you when you ask for a reference.
10:33 you have no idea what you are talking about. JoePa does not teach undergrad classes at PENN. He is the head football coach at Penn State, and during the spring semester, he teaches Con Law at PENN State Law in Philly. I only went to PENN for undergrad, so I never had the chance to take his class.
9:52, I never really understood your schtick, and who it was poking fun at. Kind of assumed it was Penn, but given the fact that the schtick is somewhat retarded, I couldn't be sure. Thanks for clearing it up - I always felt like I might be out of the loop on some sort of clever controversy, and now I know I'm not.
Who is hiring clerks? Anyone care to share firms or legal markets where clerks have received interviews/offers recently (by recently I mean clerks who sent out application materials in Feb/March)?
Jones Day is still a POS firm
I can't believe there is a thread dedicated to a JD matter. ATL likes to make a habit of largely ignoring the firm.
11:21 -- DC firms are hiring.
I like the emailer's claim that JD is "keeping pace" with bonuses. So being 10 months behind everyone else = "keeping pace"?
Thanks 12:18. Does anyone have information about/experiences with the west coast?
12:40 - the major LA firms are all hiring -- Gibson, Latham, Skadden, Irell, Quinn.
12:40 - JD's West Coast offices are small but growing. Nice people, decent hours and they pay bonuses (under market though).
One Firm Worldwide!
1:12, 1:37 - Good to know (I am in the process of applying).
i've nothing but good things to say about jones day.
whoever does marketing for jones day should be fired
How long do west coast firms typically take to respond to an application? In other markets I have heard within 2 days, so I am getting a little nervous (not sure if the delay is typical or a bad sign).
Anybody know what San Diego firms are hiring clerks?
