Crackberry v. iPhone: Smackdown Part I

iPhone.jpg
Apple wants to put its iPhones in the workplace, which may mean that your firm Crackberry could be replaced by an equally addictive (but much more hip) iPhone.

We think, however, that there should be a screening process for determining who gets the iPhones. There's a certain degree of unaffected coolness, a hipster air, that one needs to have to use an iPhone and not create the impression of an over-eager gadget-grabber. Also, Apple would have to tone down its image to fit with the lawyerly crowd if it wants law firms to trade their Blackberrys for iPhones. Flashy and too-cool is unrefined. We think the only solution is to wait until next year, when the iPhone isn't so flashy-new, to hand them out to lawyers.

Let's take a vote. Crackberry v. iPhone: Smackdown Part I.

Blackberry. At least there's no pretense to cool. When firms start providing iPhones, they won't be cool anymore, and I'm not convinced their utility is higher than the blackberry without the hipness factor. I don't do coke, so I don't need the reflective surface on the back, and I think blackberry has some pretty cool third-party apps that function without internet access (say, on a subway, or in a rural area).

I would love to be able to use a gadget like the iphone so I wouldn't have to carry a separate MP3 player on me. With that said, I don't see it being respected enough by the business community where it would be adopted by law firms.

Maybe you dust off the dictionary - from Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: 4hip
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): hip·per; hip·pest
Etymology: alteration of 2hep
Date: 1904
1 a: having or showing awareness of or involvement in the newest developments or styles b: very fashionable : trendy
2: aware or appreciative of something —used with to

Hey Lat, I have enjoyed this blog for the last couple of years. However, you are really straining credibility by having an Alabama 1L writing about the "lawyerly crowd." I was a 1L not too long ago (in NYC, not Alabama), and I cringe to think of one of my classmates then writing about what Biglaw associates like and don't like, what firms are up to. It just doesn't work. I am a biglaw associate in NYC now. You have to write what you know. Ms. Alabama 1L doesn't know a f*cking thing about Biglaw or the "lawyerly crowd," and you are screwing up ATL by letting her write about it.

The iPhone is a fragile, dainty little number with a battery lasts 24 hours at the most.

Any technology committee that votes even to try iPhones for "real" business purposes should be disbanded and its members fired.

The reason people are upset about SEN is because this is a blog that focuses on elite firms and high ranking legal folks with a tabloid tone. Lat has lots of credibility to post on these items, and it adds to the site.

SEN is not at an elite firm, and will not be. She seems like a fun, sweet person who has been lucky enough to get a great opportunity if she wants to be a journalist. I wish her the best.

However, she has her own blog already. Its nice of Lat to give her a little publicity but this is not a charity. When she in on the site, it ceases to be what ATL is all about. Sorry, SEN, it's not personal, it's just how it is.

While I agree the personal attacks are unnecessary, it's equally stupid that every time someone complains, someone (in my opinion, the exact same person) responds by saying the complainer is a stressed out lawyer (thanks for the clever observations, really!).

There is a legitimate gripe here. Either keep up with your own blog, Lat, which we all enjoy enough to find time for in our day, or put it in the hands of someone with decent credibility.

Now, before you tell me to just stop reading this site if I don't like SEN, let me remind you: this site is designed for me-- for lawyers at top tier firms, accustomed to high quality work and play. It caters to topics I care about and I like that. I like to visit and take a quick break every few hours to enjoy the ATL distractions.

But, take this to heart, Lat, I ONLY like to visit because I can rely on you, a peer with excellent taste and fine judgment, to present something worth my time. If you continue to compromise that essential ingredient, this blog will whiter and die or, worse, end up a haven for inane law students and the otherwise unimpressive.

4:04, there've definitely been some super sexist remarks on other posts -- all the stuff about how she should just shut up, she's cute and that's all she's good at, etc., is obviously sexist -- but there's actually been a refreshing lack of that in the comments to THIS post, so it's not really the right one in which to complain about sexism. Pointing out that she's an inexperienced and boring 1L with unimpressive writing skills isn't sexist. It might be a little bit mean, but it isn't sexist.

I mean, this blog is sexist all the freaking time. But here? One of the few places where I'm actually not seeing too much of it.

I use both. They each have their advantages in terms of typing (amazing autocorrect on iPhone, good shorthand and tactile on BB). That said, BB is easier in terms of interaction with Outlook, and the battery life is much, much longer. I'm completely in love with my iPhone, but prefer the BB for work purposes.

I use both but regret putting a single dollar towards the iPhone. It is bug-ridden and Apple made it clear that it cares more about locking it down than providing a good product. The keyboard sucks - the buttons are too small and close together which leads to many more errors than the tactile Blackberry. The Calendar and Contacts are severely limited in functionality and compatibility. And whereas it took me about 15 minutes to get up to full speed on the Blackberry, the iPhone has been a painful example of poor design. They took "keep it simple stupid" to a whole different level. The iPhone is geared to morons who would otherwise screw up whatever technological device they touch. If you know what you are doing and want more control, it just frustrates the hell out of you. But I guess that makes it perfect for lawyers - most of my colleagues wouldn't know an iPhone from a brick, and to them, that's a feature.

I think there can be a better option. I hope it comes soon, before I throw this PoS iPhone out the window.

To the commenter who said iphones are now the standard in big law firms in LA, can you clarify which ones? (I'm going to one, and just curious if I should put off buying an ipod touch, if I might get an iphone through work.)

Also, doesn't the fact that you actually want to have your iphone with you (e.g., to listen to music) make it more attractive to employers, since it increases the odds that the employee will have the iphone with them more often?

avatar

To 4:34: You say "The criticisms now are liitle more than gratuitous put down...the viewership..attacked her much more aggressively than she deserved."

I disagree. Aside from mere catharsis, one goal (my goal) of criticising SEN is to persuade Lat to stop using her. For that, quantity matters. I hope people don't let up on SEN because I'd like to see her gone. I admire SEN's ambition and her ability to secure this gig in the first place, but ATL is worse because of her. I will stop reading if it becomes another XOXO.

Does the I-phone still require service through at&t? Firms that have wireless plans with a carrier other than at&t won't go with the i-phone.

I think this is a great thread. The new corporate capabilities of the i-Phone are going to change the game. Now that it handles MS Exchange and has the ability to be wiped remotely, I think some firms will give it a shot.

As an i-Phone owner myself, though, I think I would prefer to use it as my 'personal' phone and keep the berry for work.

How many of you have two phones? Is it a big hassle?

I love the arguments...everyone claims to be a lawyer at a top firm or student at an elite school, yet makes comments about Sharon being killed and the like, along with the completely over-the-top sexual comments. Glad to know the legal profession is being spearheaded by good, ethical people. Guys, she's a human being, for christ's sake.

This really is a stupid post, but worse, it could have been handled in a much less condescending, prestige-whore way.

Of course, this is ATL, why wouldn't we want that?

2:02, not everyone claims to be a student at an elite school; some are at Fordham.
