Lawyer of the Day: Aníbal Acevedo Vilá
Today’s Lawyer of the Day has a political connection. He’s a superdelegate to the Democratic convention, as well as an Obama supporter. From the AP:
Puerto Rico Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila indignantly denied wrongdoing Thursday and gave no sign he would abandon his re-election effort after being charged with campaign finance violations that carry a penalty of 20 years in prison.Acevedo, a superdelegate to this summer’s Democratic convention, accused U.S. prosecutors of pursuing a politically motivated indictment alleging that the governor and a dozen other people conspired to illegally pay off his campaign debts.
“I am going to defend my rights and protect the dignity of my family and of the people of Puerto Rico who support me,” the governor said in a statement hours after the FBI arrested most of those named in the indictment in San Juan, Philadelphia and Washington area.
Fun factoid: Governor Acevedo is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the alma mater of Eliot Spitzer, another governor — make that ex-governor — facing possible legal trouble. This means that HLS has given us two Lawyers of the Day in a row; yesterday’s LOTD was card-counting queen Jane Willis.
(In Harvard’s defense, Governor Acevedo just got an LLM there. He received his JD from the University of Puerto Rico.)

First to say posting that your first is as stupid as backing Obama if you're a lawyer under indictment.
Lat must work for the Hillary campaign... just because you cannot bring Hillary up to the Obama level in the eyes of the American people does not give the Hildog fans the right to pull Obama (and his crew) down into the mud.
Um...I did a consulting gig in Puerto Rico. We interviewed tons of people for our research, from the man on the street to CEOs to attorneys at the top firms there. What did we learn? Corruption is RAMPANT. People there speak openly about that fact. Not surprised that it bubbled to the top.
Fun factoid: Which state or territory gets the most federal aid? Answer: Puerto Rico.
It has a GIANT budget. And we pay for it.
PS--If you ever visit, don't miss the bioluminscent lagoons. Top 5 coolest thing I have ever seen. Much of the rest of PR is eclipsed by better Caribbean locations.
God DAMN America!!
And while you're at it, God DAMN Puerto Rico!!!
The BEST CLERKSHIP, though, is with this PR Judge in the First Circuit. I think it's Judge Torruella.
I have a buddy who clerked there -- lived in San Juan right by the beach. He had the best view. And he got to fly up to Boston for 1st Circuit arguments.
I visited him -- all he did was surf (or bodyboard?), lay in the beach, explore the island. He had an awesome setup. He's slaving away at a firm now, though, so it all evens out.
God DAMN Obama!!!
What's with Puerto Rico anyway. It's America, but not.
Drop OUT Obama!
You guys are nailing Obama like Bosnian snipers. Keep it up!
Tomorrow, why not feature a third HLS grad - Gov. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan. Not in trouble and lots better looking.
Draft Gore!
What's with Puerto Rico anyway?
Efforts to make Puerto Rico a state have been continually rejected by PR's as a “Yankee plebiscite”—an attack on PR independence—for decades.
(Editorial - The Washington Times - Sept. 24, 2007)
Statehood for Puerto Rico, like statehood for the District of Columbia, is a solution in search of a problem. THE 4 MILLION PUERTO RICANS ENJOY U.S. CITIZENSHIP, ARE EXEMPT FROM U.S. INCOME TAXES (but not payroll taxes) and enjoy many of the public benefits of residents of the 50 states. The statehood issue is the dominant one in island politics, and over the years, while neither side has built a majority, on four occasions since the 1950s voters have rejected both statehood and independence. Enough Puerto Ricans have considered the commonwealth a good deal for long enough to sustain the status quo. The only complaint is that Puerto Rico has only a "resident commissioner" in Washington, who, like the representatives of the District of Columbia, Guam or American Samoa, cannot vote in Congress.
Okay...I think it is time Harvard starting taking some hits in the rankings over all this. First, their student body is obviously full of criminals. Second, they must accept anyone who applies to their LLM programs. JD from the University of Puerto Rico?!?!? Serisouly? Are they even accredited? Shame!!
I will vote for any President who demands that Puerto Rico either shit or get off the pot. That is, they either become a state and act like one, or the money train stops rolling into town.
FWIW, Puerto Ricans pay income tax at a rate higher than Federal income taxes (but roughly parallel to Federal + avg. State Taxes, i.e., more than FL residents, but less than CA residents), it's just that all of the money stays with the PR government. The Federal gvt does tax salaries of federal employees and collect revenue from other sources.
The real issue in PR isn't whether to become independent (at most 4% of the population wants that, although there is more support for a much looser relationship with the US), but whether the status quo (no representation, but taxes stay in PR) is better than statehood, which would bring 2 Senators and somewhere between 4 and 7 members of the House.
Puerto Rico = TTT
boriqua morena boriqua morena
no taxation - no representation, i guess.
9:22 Lou Dobbs is that you?
I wish somebody would just shit on Puerto Rico like the TTT that it is
All sewers lead to Puerto Rico.

Anibal Acevedo Vila is getting a big taste of his own medicine, he persecuted his pro-statehood opponents relentlessly. He fabricated a case against his pro-statehood opponent for the 2000 resident commissioner position and received a reprimand from the federal court in PR in that case, they came very close to disbarring him for his actions. He persecuted former governor Rosselló in a fabricated case regarding his retirement pension which did not pass the criteria of minimum evidence to show cause, which his Secretary of Justice appealed twice unsuccessfully, trying the case in the local press, in an unprecedented shameful spectacle of his judicial tailor. We Puerto Ricans are fed up of Acevedo VIla's lies and dirty tricks toward the opposition, he is a friend of Hugo Chavez and owes his position to his former boss, Judge Hernandez Denton, who ruled in his favor counting double votes in the 2004 election. WHat is most horrible in this case is that Acevedo Vila has caused great shame to Puerto Ricans and claims that his case is a case of political persecution against Puerto Rico by the federal judicial system, but he conveniently forgets that the accused is Anibal Acevedo Vilá, not the people of Puerto Rico he swears to love. If he really appreciated his people, he would resign and prevent us from suffering further embarassment. Shame on You, Anibal Acevedo Vilá and we hope to say GOODBYE to you SOON!!!!

Boy this place is filled with a lot of bigoted bull crap.
The USA is responsible for the status limbo that affects the Puertorican society. It should have either incorporated the territory in the 1950's or cut it loose. It was Convenient to have a place to put Roosevelt Roads, and the Vieques shooting range was also a sweet deal, not to mention securing a strategic place to keep subs and spy on the rest of the southern hemisphere.
Of course this was not all one way, some Concessions where made to the residents and the promise of statehood and greater equality where dangled, knowing full well that as long as the status quo was kept they would not have to grant their promise.
SO just like any relationship I say USA fish or cut bait, but stop stringing us along.
FYI -- Acevedo Vila is not a graduate of LAW from HLS; rather he graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and THEN did a "masters" in Harvard.
Still -the man is as corrupt as they come. He has already tried to frame to opposition party leaders with false charges on the local level; with no success. What goes up -- must come down...
cant believe the USA is so stupid to give so much to a country and not benefit at all from it.....i thought they were surely more intelligent than that....poor USA...lets little islands take advantage of them...PITY....HAHAHA
just think of the 350,000 jobs in the US that are sustained by Puerto Rico's close commercial/economic relationship with the US. Not to mention the 500 million dollars we overpay for exclusive use of the US shitty Merchant Marine.
Wow!!! I'm always amazed at the level of stupidity people reach when talking about Puerto Rico. Shit or get of the pot? Gravy train? US just gives us money? Are you guys just complete morons?
I can see that because none of you have the balls to put your name on the line with your comments that you are just imbeciles at a keyboard. So my response is one you'll understand...screw you! Do a little digging and find out what you are talking about before you make a comment.
The US has used Puerto Rico and its people for years as military guinea pigs, medical subjects (without them knowing it), as a location to tryout napalm and uranium tipped missiles, and even as a pilot location for shitty governmental policies. It that sounds like a gravy train, then you guys have a truly sadistic view of life.
Again, try to learn a bit about a place before sounding like complete assholes. Oh, and about Anibal Acevedo Vila, mark my words, DOJ will have to drop its case. I'm not a fan of his, but look at the charges, they are as bogus as they come.
