Musical Chairs: John Bolton to Kirkland & Ellis

John Bolton Surrender Is Not An Option Above the Law blog.jpgHere's news of an interesting, high-profile move. Our source offers this preface:

"[A] number of the younger lawyers at K&E tend to be moderate to liberal and have donated a great deal to Obama. Yet K&E seems to be a popular destination for right-wingers nonetheless."

(Well, that depends on the office. There are lots of moderate to liberal young lawyers in K&E's New York and Chicago offices. But in the more politically charged Washington office, conservatives dominate the junior ranks as well.)

Oh yes, the move. As reported by James Oliphant -- former editor in chief of the Legal Times, who not too long ago went back to reporting, for the Chicago Tribune -- in the Tribune's D.C. blog, The Swamp:

John Bolton, the outspoken former Bush administration official and UN ambassador, is joining Chicago-based Kirkland & Ellis as a senior adviser.

Bolton worked as a senior arms-control policymaker in the State Department and became known for his hawk-like views toward Iraq, Iran and North Korea and a belligerant personal style. His nomination as United Nations ambassador in 2005 became a highly charged affair, largely because Bolton had expressed tremendous antipathy toward the U.N.

He was once quoted as saying that "The Secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost ten stories today, it wouldn't make a bit of difference." Ultimately, he was never confirmed as U.N. ambassador but made a recess appointment by President Bush and again drew criticism for an abrasive manner while in New York.

Interestingly enough, John Bolton was friends during law school with Clarence Thomas, who would also become a target of the left in the years to come. At last year's book party for Justice Thomas's memoir, My Grandfather's Son, Bolton and Thomas were overheard commiserating over how doing audio versions of their books made them hoarse.

His policies are counter to our foreign policy interests? Yes, I guess we can rely instead on a different democratic country in the region - oh yeah, there isn't one.

The blame for the blood of the civililans in "Palestine" is squarely on the shoulders of their own leadership and the culture of hatred & intolerance they continue to ebrace. As for the Lebonese that got caught in the crossfire last year, blame Hezbollah (and their supporters, Iran)

And Al Queda doesn't need any propaganda to spread the hate - it's what they live, die and kill for. Get a clue.

Lest we forget that Hamas is a DEMOCRATICALLY elected government and the election of such a party is a reflection of the people’s response to murder, plunder, and land stealing that the “only democratic county” perpetuates.

Domer lawyer, a number of liberal attorneys made snide political remarks in my interviews with them. Luckily, as a liberal, you haven't experienced that because (1) there are less Republicans in the legal profession (especially at top firms) and (2) those Republicans who are at top firms happen to be more tolerant of those with divergent political beliefs. As a minority, Republicans have to be more accepting of their liberal colleague's opinions.

Just as an aside, the vast majority of people that I know at K&E's NY office are liberal. The DC office is an anomaly from what I have been told.

Land stealing, Example No. 1000000000000:

The government of 1. Israel said Sunday that it had approved the construction of hundreds of homes in a West Bank settlement north of Jerusalem (all on palestinian land!!!), a move that could further complicate a peace effort already hobbled by violence.

The Housing Ministry has also announced plans to build hundreds of dwellings in Jewish areas of East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in the 1967 Middle East war. The Palestinians claim all of East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.

You mean THIS Rachel Corrie?

Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old terrorism advocate from Olympia, Wash., died in a bulldozer accident yesterday. Corrie was at fault in the accident, which occurred when she either stood or crouched in front of an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer in Gaza, the Jerusalem Post reports:

The bulldozers were part of an IDF tunnel- and mine-clearing operation. The Rafah refugee camp borders Egypt, from which Palestinian terrorists smuggle in weapons and explosives. And according to interim peace accords, Israel has the right to operate in and secure the area.

Corrie not only backed anti-Israeli terrorism; she also hated America. An Associated Press photo shows Corrie, her face contorted with hate, burning a "mock U.S. flag" at a pro-Saddam rally last month. (Hat tip: Little Green Footballs.) Reuters reports on a "symbolic funeral" that drew some 1,000 Palestinian Arabs. One of them tells the "news" service: "We fly a U.S. flag today to show our support to all American peace lovers, those like Rachel." If she were still alive, no doubt she'd have burned the flag.

Hamas a democractic party?! Please give us some indications of their respect for the rule of law, rights of minorities, rights of political opponents and other hallmarks of democracy. Oh, BTW, the Palestinians voted for Hamas because 1) Fatah is as corrupt as the day is long, and 2) Hamas promises the destruction of Israel.

BTW, be careful where you aim your Qassams - you might hit the NICU in Ashkelon which has been moved to a bomb shelter . . . which also just so happens to be caring for Palestinian neo-nates.

Other countries in the region want nukes only because Israel has them?! Right, I forgot how well various Middle East tribes got along before the Zionist usurpers arrived.

First of all, dickhead, it is disputed that Shebba Farms is "Lebanese land." Israel and the UN take the position that it is Syrian land which Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six Day War. Syria and Lebanon now make the claim that it is Lebanese land in order to justify attacks against Israel.

Second, let's not forget how Israel came to occupy that land -- it was attacked by Arab countries in the region (albiet not Lebanon) seeking to eliminate Israel.

Mr. No Dog,

He states that the United nations is racist (his premise), and thus is not credible when it points out that Israel is practicing apartheid, racism, and other various crimes. (his conclusion). Then he seeks to INVOKE the U.N.’s credibility when saying that shebba farms is syria’s. Here is how it looks like in logic: the UN says Shebba farms is Syrian (conclusion) from which the following premise is assumed: that the U.N. is credible. In one sentence he is saying the UN is not credible, and in the other, he solely relies on its credibility. You have to keep an eye out for it, the zionists are particularly keen at playing both sides to their advantage.

He says the UN is biased against israel and in favor of the palestinians. So it follows that it is significant when a known anti-israel group supports israel against the interests of the palestinians. it's so obvious that even an anti-israel group capitulates to this. that's his reasoning and it is sound.

Anon-aka Punon,

Sigh. Judging by some of your posts, you seem to have just enough intelligence to understand the concept of distinctions. For example, when I say zionists, you assume, foolishly, that I am being anti-semetic. Pat robertson is a huge zionist, yet he is not Jewish. Moreover, there are a substantial amount of jews, living all over the world and is Israel, who are against zionism. It is you, perhaps, that thinks all jews are zionists, a critical error. Your unsubstantiated assumptions does not enable you to cloak me in anti-semetism. Granted, you may be part of the population, some of which have posted here, that will do anything to equate the speaking out against the horrors of zionism, and the devastating effects of it here in the US and around the world, with anti-semitism. But, based on some of your posts, in which you have claimed to have attend a top school, clerked, and work for a big firm, I sincerely hope that you are simply misguided, and not part of the vicious group that seeks to hide the truth and inhibit justice. K&E is too evil for me, and that's saying something.

@ Gay 2L going to Kirkland DC:

For a summer, no big deal. They treat you bad, they'll never recruit anyone from your school again, and might be barred outright by said school if it had to do with your orientation, which would be really ugly even for evil empire K&E.

Career?...When are students going to learn to research the damn firms they interview with? What were you thinking?

Seriously, I work at K&E DC and can hardly stomach this appointment. BUT, openly gay- not a problem at all here!! You don't even see these big wigs, they certainly don't dominate firm culture. The "Real People" here that are actually working are actually more liberal than you think, and no one, even the powers that be care if someone is white, black, gay, straight, purple or green if they are good at what they do.

9:31 couldn't be more wrong. Is that a joke?

Why would Republicans have a problem with open gays? Competition?
