An Update on Springergate at Northwestern Law
ATL broke the news earlier this month that Northwestern Law School selected Jerry Springer as commencement speaker for its May 16 graduation.
ATL got a shout-out in the Chicago Tribune, which described the controversy around Springer’s selection. Despite some students’ dissatisfaction, the decision is final:
Last week, the students who selected Springer announced in an e-mail to classmates that their decision had faculty approval and was final, emphasizing that he also was an Emmy-winning news anchor and political commentator who had drawn large crowds at previous speaking engagements. On Sunday, Springer, a 1968 graduate of the law school, confirmed that he will deliver the address.
“The students invited me, and I’m honored,” Springer said through his publicist, Linda Shafran. Although he has spoken on numerous college campuses, Shafran said, this will be Springer’s first commencement address.
We had a poll last week asking, “Do you support Northwestern Law School’s selection of Jerry Springer as its graduation speaker?” Here are the results. Springer had your overwhelming support, with over 76% voting in favor of the selection.
There was extensive discussion on our earlier post. We chose a few of your comments to highlight, after the jump.

Earlier: Jerry Springer to be Commencement Speaker at Northwestern Law School
Springer is a Northwestern law grad (‘68), former Cincinnati mayor, and an Emmy Award winner. But he’s had scandal in his life, resigning from the Cincinnati City Council after he paid for a prostitute, and he’s the ringmaster of the Jerry Springer Show, which many consider… what’s the word?… trashy.
Here’s what the commenters had to say in his support:
Having Jerry Springer as your graduation speaker, instead of some boring random judge, is awesome. That’s a story to tell your kids. I’m jealous.
The guy is a great speaker. Hell, he was the Mayor of Cincy (I know it is a TTT, but still). I would also bet that he is smarter than 99% of the kids he would be addressing (same percentage applies to commentors here). I would also say that his career is the envy of any biglaw partner out there — more $, no work, no stress, and naked chicks (although often fat inbreeds).
I graduated from Norhtwestern last year. I don’t remember who our speaker was, but I remember she said nothing worth-while or interested. I think she just read her resume to us, then read a few other people’s resume’s to us, then listed like 10 or 15 alums who had done something that she thought was very impressive, but it wasn’t impressive enough that any of us had heard of any of them (save for a few). Then we got our little hood, and went to lunch with our families. Basically is was not “Etched” into my heart forever. My wife will be graduating this year, and let’s just say I’m looking forward to being in the audience more than I was two weeks ago. That said, they could have found someone who was both dignified and interesting. But if we have to choose between the two, I’ll take interesting.
As a Cincinnatian, I can attest: Jerry Springer is more than his latest incarnation as a talk show host. He started out as a gifted progressive civic leader, and he has appeared in Ohio this year as a thoughtful, articulate advocate for Democratic candidates here. But don’t take my word: Listen to WBEZ’s popular radio show, “This American Life,” which includes a profile of him. People who knew him as an elected official compared him to JFK. Expect him to resurrect that tone as your graduation speaker. Prepare to be surprised.
And from those opposed:
wow. the fact that people are defending this schmuck as a speaker makes me want to cry.Jerry Springer: prime example of the degradation of the human race for money.
What is there to argue about?:This man exploits stupid, poor, desperate people for holier-than-thous to laugh at and belittle. He encourages violent solutions to messed up situations and shows that the personal problems of others are to laughed at and mocked.
And you guys think that’s admirable? This guy’s scum, plain and simple. Any “admirable history” (yes he was a politician! whoo hoo! so awesome!) is immediately swallowed by his scum-sucking, dirt-wallowing show.
He’s slime, and the Law school is slime for giving this cretin the stage. The Law School Faculty should be ashamed, and the alumni should be up in arms.
Who’s next? O.J. Simpson? Tonya Harding? Monica Lewinsky? Maybe Florida Cowgirl? Jason Blair!? Or Stephen Glass?
The majority of the comments, like the poll, suggest that people are looking forward to hearing Springer speak. We asked before, but we’ll ask again: Will there be midgets?

I find it interesting that the Chicago Tribune leaves out the fact
that Springer was elected mayor of Cincinnati AFTER resigning from
City Council...
JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!
Northwestern can kiss goodbye to the top 10 after this display of judgment. Then again, they should never have been there in the first place so alls well that ends well.
ATL got a much cooler shout-out on Page Six

I know that you really think G-Town should be in the top ten, but Northwestern isn't a shitty school. Selecting Springer isn't going to affect U.S Rankings, but you keep on telling yourself it will.

My condolences on your rejection from Northwestern. Hopefully you'll be able to still land a job with a Loyola law degree.
Judging by tone, level of substantive sophistication, emotional control, and language skills, Springer's supporters are clearly the more advanced group. The "opposed" comments look like excerpts from a middle school writing project on white ebonics.
Springer is a piece of shit. This is a man who looks for wounded people to poke at their wounds for entertainment of others. This is really all that he is -- a man who has made millions by trading in broken human lives. I don’t see what he has to offer, or what he has done to deserve any recognition. I know he had a career in politics, but it was hardly a distinguished one, and his attempts at political analysis have proven banal at best. Bottom line: Springer is a morally odious dumbfuck.
Our graduating class voted to have Willie Nelson speak, on the theory that he knew more about the American legal system than we did as novice legal graduates. We got some darn Supreme Court justice instead and he made a joke about how he'd heard we preferred Willie, but he assuming it really wasn't true.
Here's the link for the TAL episode that features Springer. Quite an amazing story. City Counsel, pays for hooker with a check, THEN gets elected mayor, becomes a television news anchor, becomes television superstar.
Northwestern, "This is your Jerry Springer moment..."
I don't want this moment to die,
So dip me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians,
I don't want this moment to die.
This is her Jerry Springer moment,
She don't want this moment to die,
So dip her in chocolate and throw her to the lesbians,
To the lesbians,
She don't want this moment to die.
And actually, here's the link.

That's my final thought.
Awesome, lets take comments from an old story and add them to an article that adds nothing substantive. I get that this is a fun story, and might attract a lot of commenters, but seriously, why not just post a link to the Vanity Fair photo of Mylie Cyrus... it's about as germane and will drum up lots of hits.
"Until next time take care of yourself and each other" J. Springer.
I'd like to point out that the "Cowgirl" is from Florida State, not Florida. Only ugly girls go to UF. And she's doing quite well for herself I hear...modeling, writing, successfully parlaying her momentary appearance on tv into a career. I for one would enjoy hearing her speak (where speak = stand up in front of me doing anything in the world that she wants while I gawk unabashedly).
What bothers me about Springer is how inane what he always has to say when he is taken seriously. If you have ever heard him on the radio, or in a serious interview, he just never makes sense. He is either just incoherent or platitudunious. The suggestion of having to listen to him bloviate at an already dragged out commencement ceremony nauseates me and indeed unfastens my bowels altogether.
Ummm... how is Monica Lewinsky the logical follow-up name to O.J. Simpson and Tonya Harding? Last I checked, all she did was sorta-frak a president and wear berets. Are fashion crimes now as bad as violent crimes?
i never knew he was a lawyer. i also never knew he had gotten caught soliciting prostitutes.
from his wikipedia article: He was forced to resign in 1974 after admitting to hiring a prostitute.[3] The episode was uncovered when a police raid on a Fort Wright, Kentucky "massage parlor" unearthed a check Jerry Springer had written for its "services".
he must not have been a very good lawyer cause, honestly, who writes personal checks to those places?
Gaius Baltar, you have the absolute coolest profile picture, and I am jealous of it. Curses!
