ATL March April Madness: And the winner is...

Latham Coolest.jpgOver 2000 votes are in. It’s you, Latham & Watkins! Latham's the “coolest,” baby! By a .6% margin.

One of our readers from Cleary an unnamed firm expressed disappointment in the poll’s closing at midnight PST instead of EST. ATL believes in time zone equity and refused to exercise a New York East Coast bias.

The caveat on this ATL tournament is that Latham is the “coolest” law firm in the Vault’s top sixteen, due to our arbitrary tournament selection for the Sweet Sixteen. There was some complaining about the tournament in the comments section, but we think you guiltily and secretly loved it. At least, 2000 of you did. Should the ATL tournament start with 64 firms next time?

Maybe Latham will use the 2008 ATL title of “coolest” firm in their recruiting next year. We sure hope so.

The voting map surprised us, after the jump.

Voting map.jpg

Despite a preponderance of East Coast voters, L.A.-based founded Latham pulled off the win.

For all intents and purposes, L&W is no longer "based" in L.A. Center of gravity is East Coast - the NYC office is not only bigger than L.A., but also busier and more profitable. DC is arguably the most prestigious office.

L&W seems to win everything on this site. I officially quit ATL. Not only have the topics been asinine for the last 2 weeks, but this new format is horrendous.

Don't ignore the will of the people Lat.

Although it is good to see that the annoying wait before you know if your comment "took," which leads to double postings, still exists. Well done.

This commenting format is going to reduce participation on the message boards.

And it really sucks that we can't use funny names to sign our posts. Drop the sign in feature since no one in their right mind will ever use their real name. Also, please drop the picture feature since no one in their right mind will ever put up a real picture.

2:03(1) & (2) = new to ATL.

Problems with new format:

1) No name for posting. This was half the fun and half the information.

2) The picture. Will never be used, ever.

Good things about new format:

1) Additional information like commented / viewed / recomended.

2) Watching everyone freak out.

3) I notice the ads less (maybe just me).

This is still the dumbest poll ever.

Lat, you seriously want L&W to use this poll? Are you kidding me? Would you hire a lawyer that they made a career choice based in any part on a poll of 2,000 people on an online "legal tabloid" for which law firm is the "coolest?"

Beyond the idiocy of the poll itself, the .6% margin of "victory" is WELL within the margin of how many L&Wers voted for their own firm.

Stupid stupid stupid.

I didn't think so.

Is anyone else tired of NY L&W associates whining whenever someone mentions that L&W is an LA firm?

We know you are miserable in your 300 sq. ft. studio and desparately try daily to tell yourself that you're not a prestige whore and that living in NY actually makes you happy. But no one cares. If it makes you feel better, call L&W a New York firm in your little circle, but no one needs to see that here. So shut up. Typing this is cutting into my beach time.

-so glad not to be in nyc

How can a poll measure how "cool" a law firm is, if it relies on losers who actually take the time to go and vote and thus, have probably never experienced "cool" in the real world? Doesn't this poll REALLY measure "wanna-be cool"?

2:19 - I wrote the post about L&W not being a CA firm and I am an associate in CA , so your little anti-NYC rant is misguided. Also, it's too cold today in SoCal for the beach, so I'm guessing you're actually some associate at a TTT in the Midwest.

OR, I was joking about the beach. Not so bright over there, are we 4:27?

Anyway, thanks for using the phrase SoCal and demonstrating that, while you might LIVE in "SoCal," you will actually never be from here. So, I'd invite you to return to the TTT Midwest you describe post haste and stop clogging our roadways.

Though, I am pretty sure that you are actually from the DC office (if you work at Latham at all). The hints being: (1) that NO ONE at Latham thinks of the DC office as the "most presitigious"; (2) you said the center of gravity is East Coast instead of just saying NYC (so this means you aren't in NYC); (3) NO ONE from LA would ever write "L.A."; and (4) you wrote "DC," and not "D.C."; because like LA, nobody in DC would EVER write "D.C."

I should have been a private investigator. I'm kind of amazing at it.

Except for the Socal comment. There are plenty of us born and raised there that regularly use Socal. Mostly because we hate when people refer to LA as including everything from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Don't quit your day job.

5:12:

AHA! You said you were born and raised "there," not "here." You haven't been around for a while. The term "SoCal" has fallen out of favor.

No, just kidding. It is used. But the key is this. The only time we actually use the phrase SoCal is to distinguish from NorCal (also known as NoCal, in some circles). No one says "I live in SoCal" when talking to someone either: (1) in SoCal; or (2) from some other part of the country. The way it was used was not quite accurate, because there was no confusion about what part of California we were talking about.

Also, I guess that 5:12 is from Orange County.

Come on, give me props. I'm right.
