Featured Job Survey: Bar Expenses, Signing Bonuses and Advances, Part Four

Last week, we posted Part Three of the results from our ATL / Lateral Link survey on bar stipends and reimbursements, salary advances, and signing bonuses (which covered the range of firms from Akin Gump to Proskauer Rose). We got quite a few tips in response, as well as quite a few comments in person, at the NALP conference in Toronto.

Find out whether today's installment will at last make it to Wachtell, Weil, WilmerHale and beyond . . . after the jump.

But before we get there, let's quickly review what we said about the table last week:

The table below shows four things for each firm:

  * how the firm helps new associates with bar exam expenses (reimbursement of actual expenses or a fixed stipend),

  * whether the firm pays new associates a signing bonus or graduation bonus (not counting clerkship bonuses, which are discussed elsewhere),

  * whether the firm provides salary advances (i.e., loans) in any particular amounts, and

  * whether the firm provides a pro-rated bonus (a "stub bonus") for the period between your start date and the end of the year first year.

As always, please send us a tip if any of the details about your firm are missing or wrong or fraught with nuance. Also feel free to let us know whether these stipends and bonuses are subject to repayment if you leave, and whether your firm helps out with relocations, both topics of surveys last week.

And now, that introduction aside, read on to see the fourth batch of results from our ATL / Lateral Link survey on bar stipends and reimbursements, salary advances, and signing bonuses. Check it out, after the jump.

Update: An updated, extended version of this table is now here. Click on over to see the latest results.

And, of course, if you'd like to add, update, or clarify any details about your firm please send us a tip.

*Allen & Overy, Simpson Thacher and WilmerHale pay a pro-rated bonus based on a $35,000 annual bonus (which would usually work out to $8,750 based on a 1/4 proration).
Chadbourne & Parke pays a pro-rated bonus which would usually work out to $9,400.
Cleary Gottleib and Cadwalader pay a pro-rated "market" bonus which would usually work out to $10,000 at Cleary and ranges up to $18K at Cadwalader (which appears to pay NY market in all offices).
Davis Polk pays a pro-rated bonus based on a $30,000 to $35,000 annual bonus.
Dewey & LeBoeuf pays a pro-rated annual bonus which works out to $5K to $10K in most offices.
Fried Frank pays a pro-rated annual bonus which generally worked out to $10K last year.
Irell & Manella pays a pro-rated bonus based on a $47,500 annual bonus (which would work out to about $12K based on a 1/4 proration).

** Cooley Godward pays "six weeks" salary. This either means $18,461.54 ($160K * 6/52) or $20,000 (three semi-monthly installments of $6,666.67.) Since most people clicked on "$18,000" or wrote in a 6/52 calculation, we're putting $18,461.54 in the table for now.

*** Katten, Kirkland, Mayer Brown, Sidley Austin, and DLA Piper associates in Chicago may receive more under a PILI fellowship. At Katten, the associates participating in a PILI fellowship will receive an additional $7,000 stipend in May. At Kirkland and Mayer Brown, Chicago associates may opt to take 13 or 10 weeks pay, respectively, under a PILI fellowship instead of the $10,000 signing bonus (which works out to over $30,000). Note that Kirkland's 13 weeks includes 5 weeks at part-time. On the non-PILI front, Mayer Brown associates in New York, Palo Alto, and DC do not appear to receive a stipend (other than for relocation expenses), and the stipend for incoming associates in the Charlotte office is $5,000.

avatar
18 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:02 PM

The firms should be ranked by how much money their total reimbursement/stipend/stub bonus package is worth (not advances because they are nearly worthless - perhaps a few hundred in interest). This is difficult to calculate unless you have a firm grasp on what the stub bonuses actually are. Regardless, it would appear that Cooley would be first with about $24,000 worth of stuff. Wilson Sonsini is not far behind at about $21,500. The top NY firms seem to be in the $18,000 range.

avatar
19 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:03 PM

Thacher Proffitt actually does reimburse for BarBri and the like. Just FYI.

avatar
20 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:03 PM

The Wachtell stub bonus info is wrong. They pay a prorated version of whatever percentage they're paying to associates in general. So my understanding is in 2007, if you started in September as a first year, you got a roughly $55,000 bonus.

avatar
21 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:04 PM

Top NY firms are more in the $15k-16k range.

avatar
23 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:07 PM

They obviously withhold taxes from stipends. They have to withhold taxes from most of the reimbursements too, but almost everyone has a gross up.

Why don't all firms offer an enormous zero-interest-rate salary advance? Seems like an easy way to give associates tax-free compensation.

avatar
28 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:23 PM

Yes, they withhold taxes from stipends.

avatar
29 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:30 PM

Why do they withhold taxes from stipends?

Shouldn't we receive the gross amount and simply report the amount as earnings to be taxed at the end of the year?

avatar
30 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:33 PM

Uhhh, a stipend is just a bonus - they are required by law to withhold taxes from it.

avatar
31 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:35 PM

The Reed Smith info is wrong also, not that anyone cares.
Did anyone research this or is this just random? I can make inaccurate charts too.

avatar
32 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:41 PM

Chart is totally wrong for Schulte Roth & Zabel

The firm pays for Bar exam expenses (plus laptop fee) Bar/Bri review course, PMBR and other supplemental courses.

The Firm provides a $5000 salary advance.

The Firm gives a "stub bonus" of about $9k

Where the hell did ATL get its information?

avatar
33 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, April 28, 2008 2:58 PM

I don't usually speak out much about ATL's methodologies, but it seems like they should have put a * or the equivalent if they didn't have enough information. TPW and SRZ give better incentives than those listed, even though the market is sh#@. Ie, the std bar fees (see comments above).

1:46 - the $20k is a salary advance, not a bonus. Doesn't really do much but help you pay upfront relocation costs, but it is not extra cash.

As far as Shulte Roth goes

What you have listed is what SRZ gives to summer associates ($1,000 advance)

It looks like 2:41 PM as what they give to starting associates

Your White & Case info is incorrect for non-NY offices. There is no travel reimbursement for the bar (or for getting sworn-in, even though being interviewed in NY in-person is mandatory) and there is no stipend -- only an advance of $5K before you start and $2500 the week you start (to compensate for the fact it takes a while to get employees into the payroll system).

Winston & Strawn pays a prorated stub bonus - at least in NY. Class of 2007 in NY made $10K for 3 months or so last year regardless of hours billed.
