Featured Job Survey: Payback’s a b-tch!
While we continue to update our ATL / Lateral Link tables on clerkship bonuses and signing bonuses and bar exam fees, a few of the clerks I have been working with lately have asked an interesting, but often critical question: “Do I have to give it back if I leave?”

In the meantime, a quick shout-out to two firms making nice strides lately: Hogan & Hartson now offers a $50K clerkship bonus in all of their offices, and Fried Frank has increased their paid maternity leave to 18 weeks.
Both of our running tables have now been updated to reflect the good news.

Can anyone with an employment law background weigh in on this issue:
Does the firm's repayment policy VIOLATE CALIFORNIA NON-COMPETE LAWS?
My firm makes associate repay the ENTIRE amount if they leave before 18 months. The employment partner I work for told me that the firm did this to circumvent CA non-compete laws. According to him, associates don't leave for at least 18 months, since the repayment penalty is so high.
I have a job offer that would require leaving right away, but I can't repay the firm, and the new emplyer won't foot the bill. Help!

could someone confirm whether it's true that Ropes is paying $35k to clerks in Boston, while Wilmer and Goodwin are paying $50k?

But here's a snippet from the Ropes website in case you had doubts about the accuracy: "Associates joining our New York office receive a bonus of $50,000 if they clerked for one year and $70,000 for two years of clerking; associates joining our other offices receive a bonus of $35,000 if they clerked for one year and $70,000 for two years of clerking."
Wilmer and Goodwin are indeed at $50K in Boston, as is Bingham, but I don't think they've adopted $70K for 2-year clerkships.
