Lawyer of the Day: Marc Dann

Marc Dann.jpgMarc Dann has had a rough tenure as Ohio's attorney general. When the media start crafting timelines of your troubles, the end may well be nigh. One of Dann's biggest problems seems to be judgment calls. Such as when choosing staff members. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a write-up on this stellar Dann staffer:

One of Attorney General Marc Dann's top managers, who is accused of sexual harassment, has a history of problems with cars and alcohol, including a drunken driving arrest months before he was hired and a smashed state car after.

Dann knew about the arrest because, according to State Highway Patrol records, he was the one who picked Anthony Gutierrez up at 2:30 in the morning at the Canfield post after Gutierrez blew a .149 on a blood-alcohol test nearly twice the legal limit.

Aren't staffers supposed to be the ones picking their drunk bosses up, and not the other way around?

Reflecting another poor hiring decision, Dann had to discipline his communications director for sending a "profane, abusive e-mail to a co-worker." His COMMUNICATIONS director.

The list of poor staffing choices goes on.

Dann's staff is not entirely to blame for his troubles. From the timeline:

June 2007: Dann, standing on a street in an upper-middle class neighborhood, spots a reporter who had written a story he didn't like. Dann says, "Hey Steve, write this down: Go (expletive) yourself!"

Maybe Dann's communications director suggested that.

Perhaps I read too fast and missed it, but is AG Dann a Democrat or a Republican?

Marc Dann is just another elected official from Youngstown, Ohio (see James Trafficant).

Youngstown and its politicians were once heavily associated with organized crime that grew out of the steel unions in the area. Those days have long since passed and Youngstown is now just another depressed midwestern town with a failing economy. Elected officials from Youngstown, however, continue to imagine they have powerful criminal ties that keep them 'above the law.' It's really embarassing to hear someone from Youngstown go on about how their 'ex-boyfriend's college roomate's friend's dad was a really big mafia guy in Youngstown." Youngstown is blighted, as are its politicians.

Marc Dann is an absolute joke, known more for his offensive outbursts and a pension for using the word "C*NT" around the office than for any real contribution to the State of Ohio.

Dann is a Democrat.

Of course Dann is a Democrat. If he was a Republican, Lat and company would find a positive way to spin this.

Marc Dann sort of represents the problems that have plagued Ohio Democrats for years. Except for a few (Sherrod Brown, some others in Federal Government, and some judges), they're all buffoons. If you read the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports from the last few weeks, Dann and his friends sound like a little boys club who hasn't grown up since their sophomore year of college.

2:03 - or...maybe we just don't give a shit about proper grammar on comments to a blog post...especially one about Marc Dann...get a life...let me correct, "club that." Sorry for disappointing you, oh, and maybe since club is actually singular "their" should be changed to "its" - you didn't get that one 5th Grade grammar coach.

Guys at my high school used to tell Steve to go f*ck himself all the time. It was no big deal.

Kash - you missed the best part of the story. Dann and his brahs share a condo in Columbus when they're all in town. Apparently Dann's scheduler has been seen over there hanging out in her pajamas.

Pajama party!??

Dann and crew sound like some pretty sweet dudes.

This guy doesn't seem so bad. The comment to the reporter kind of makes me like him.

I'm not sure that Sherrod Brown should be considered an "exception." Between Brown's drugs and Marc Dann's mistreatment of female employees, public office held by OH Dems looks more like the Delta House from Animal House!

As Secretary Of State, Brown’s employees were investigated for selling drugs to undercover agents. He pressured the investigation to end so it would not hurt his re-election chances. A Brown employee who was investigated for selling drugs was promoted, and two other employees were investigated for selling drugs out of the Secretatry of State's office mailroom. Most disturbing is an incident where a Brown employee had to go to the hospital to have her stomach pumped after eating a marijuana brownie and a Sherrod Brown office event.

2:11 - Words fail you all the time, do they? You keep working at it. Correct grammar is everyone's birthright. You're not in this country illegally are you? You can run from Lou Dobbs but you can't hide.

Even better news for Case Western. Dann, an alum, is their commencement speaker this year. Talk about catching a break.

I worked in Sherrod's office when all these things allegedly took place. As for the woman that had her stomach pumped, she knew there was pot in the brownie and the whole thing was part of a scam to get disability. She was a notorious troublemaker who just didn't want to work. The worst part of the whole thing was the little GOP sissies running around passing out brownies. What a bunch of self righteous twits, they'll defend someone for soliciting sex in a public restroom but for gods sake don't smoke pot!

this kind of horse shit goes on in biglaw offices all over the country- associate picks up partner from the drunk tank, prevents him from getting in fight or in bed with another associate, paints flames on side of Skadden limo- why is it that just because this guy works for the gubmint that it's suddenly "controversial"...?

I hope Dann gets sent to prison where he belongs!

10:55 - I have NEVER heard of an associate cock-block a partner gunning for an associate's brillo patch and NOT get fired.

Oh wait, I get it; you're making references to the 'don't get into bed with HER, get into bed with ME" ASSociates at BigLaw.

That really isn't a block. More like sexual Aikido. My bad.
