What's this? Yet another Yale Law 1L claiming that the US News rankings are irrelevant? I thought so.
Easy for the Yale kid to tell everyone not to worry about rankings. I wonder if he would have chosen Buffalo if he thought it was a better "fit."
well played 9:11...erie..
That's like JT telling another dude not to worry that said other dude is not as fly as JT.
9:11 --> so who CAN comment on the rankings then? If it's someone in the middle, they're just bitter at how poorly they're ranked. On the rare case that it's someone at the #1 school, that's suspect too? Law school deans looked pretty well situated to comment, but they screwed that one up as this article points out. Also, I don't see the point being that Buffalo would be a "better fit" for many YLS people -- the point is that for MOST schools (probably excluding the top 10) fussing about rankings is a high energy, low payoff activity, and people should stop freaking out about every little irrelevant blip which probably just reflects random noise.
9:30 am: A bit rabid, aren't you, Spaniel, for this early in the morning?
This is 9:11. I just found the tone of the article a a bit condescending. Don't worry about rankings, people!! Oh, by the way, I go to Yale. We're ranked #1.
9:11 --> Rabid? Some of us start work at 9... all set to go. But you're right, i apologize for not considering the by-line part of the column. Do authors even have control over that anyway?
My comment was more to Legal Beagle and yourself (hence the name). Both of you seemed to dismiss the article because of who wrote it. People do this all the time, of course -- but I felt like calling this one out. Just who CAN write on rankings, and not get shot down immediately for it? If the answer is 'no one' then we're stuck with them.
I agree with legal spaniel. Who will we take seriously? If a student from Appalachian, the worst law school in the country had written this, we'd laugh him out of the room. If a HLS, we'd say he was bitter he was rejected from Yale. The Yalie gives good advice- if you aren't in at one of the top don't worry about a spot here or there. It just doesnt matter.
Spaniel: No attack whatsoever on his right to write. And I get your argument. When he's writing about the masses who attend schools outside of the top 10 and then you find out he's in the top 10, it just seemed to reek a bit of the elitism I witnessed daily at my "T3" law school.
9:11/10:02 --> Fair enough. Maybe the answer is a T1/T3 coalition authorship. Solidarity! Oh wait, that's what the deans did.
Maybe the only people who can safely comment on the rankings without suspicion are anonymous bloggers? Maybe ANY data point (good or bad) about your own place in them renders your views moot to a large number of people.
And lol @ name 'legal pomeranian'
Leg poms-- We may be small but we make high pitched noise incessantly and live a long time.
I have a problem with a Yale 1L telling everyone else not to worry about the rankings because it almost reeks of paternalism. "Don't worry, guys, those rankings mean nothing, really!"
The same doesn't apply to the T4 student because his point would essentially be that, despite the rankings, graduates of lower-ranked schools can have highly satisfying careers and be financially secure. Thus, if one aspires to be an attorney he/she shouldn't abandon the pursuit merely because of a low LSAT score.
I know his byline was supposed to be funny, but c'mon.
"Michael Seringhaus is a first-year student at Yale Law School, which is ranked No.1 in the latest U.S. News & World Report."
Only two individuals may comment on the U.S. News and World Report Rankings: (1) JT, and (2) Zool, minion of Gozer the Gozarian, not the crappy Amiga character.
So, one celebrity/paradoy character and a binate, duopolistic demonic entity from the nith dimension. How can you lose?
JT just realized "Zool," as JT used it, is actually "Zuul." JT apologizes.
However, JT's point about Zool (the game) sucking balls remains accurate. In fact, it has to be up there among the worst games ever, along with the original TMNT for the NES.
Zuul says UPenn State is better than GULC.
