Lawsuit of the Day: He’s Baaack….

Roy Pearson Judge Roy L Pearson Abovethelaw Above the Law legal blog.jpgFormer Administrative Law Judge Roy Pearson, who infamously sued his dry cleaners for $54 million over a pair of pants, is a plaintiff once again. From the Washington Examiner:

The former D.C. judge who was fired after becoming a symbol of runaway litigation for suing over lost pants has claimed he suffered “humiliation” and “physical illness” in a new lawsuit seeking reinstatement and at least $1 million in damages.

In a 52-page lawsuit filed in the D.C. federal court, Roy Pearson claimed that the District and a city judicial commission wrongfully dismissed him for exposing corruption within the Office of Administrative Hearings, the department where he worked.

Exposing corruption? When it comes to abuse of power, ex-judge Pearson would seem to be Exhibit A. As for the claimed “humiliation,” Pearson brought that upon himself:

During the dry-cleaner trial, Pearson broke down on the stand when he tried to describe how he learned that he’d never see his pants again. The judge ruled in favor of the dry cleaners.

We agree with our friends at DCist: “Does Roy Pearson not have anyone in his life, say a family member or a friend, to smack him upside the head and tell him to stop being so crazy?”

Question: Do ALJs get law clerks?

I have to choke everytime I see judge, or former judge, associated with this clown. In what world was this guy EVER a qualified judge, ALJ, or attorney?

I wish this guy had a blog.

I just really, really loved those pants.

Oy vey. At least the Chungs are spared from paying attorney's fees this time around...

Just think, somewhere out there, a man -- or a very large woman -- is wearing a pair of pants that once belonged to Roy Pearson.

avatar

This would never happen in a Ron Paul administration.

RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT.
LAT FOR VICE PRESIDENT
KASH FOR SECRETARY OF... (she's a woman, so i think she should be a secretary)
ALJ PEARSON FOR MAYOR OF DC (achhhh hem... marion barry made it).

It looks like the qualifications for being a lawyer are lower in DC than in most other parts of the country.

Come on Lat, post a link to the complaint.

DSicne this is also bar results time. It might make sense to point out that DC allows lawyers to waive in without taking the bar if they score halfway decently on their MSE.

Based on 4:12(x3)'s post I can only assume that he/she did not "score halfway decently on thei MSE."

Sicne [sic] you've finally mastered spelling, 4:12, now let's talk about sentence fragments.

No, really, this has to stop. He must be clinically insane... well, on second thought, I can think of a few classmates who are on a similar path.

Actually, DC ALJ's are not technically required to have law degrees. That's right, you can be a judge in DC without being a lawyer.

Of course, you can also be on SCOTUS without being a lawyer, or any court for that matter.

23 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, May 6, 2008 5:16 PM

This is sooo wrong! He sued for $54 million for a lost pair of pants, losing his job should be worth way more than that! He should sue for $360 billion!

avatar
24 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, May 6, 2008 5:20 PM

The guy has an interesting sense of perspective:

Alleged loss of pants = $54 million
Alleged discriminatory treatment = $1 million.

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Tuesday, May 6, 2008 6:02 PM

The idea that he considered his pants worth $54 million sells him short.

One of the big damage escalators was that the store had a sign saying "Satisfaction Guaranteed" (or the like, but I think that was it). According to Pearson the sign violated the consumer rights act and he wanted damages for every day that it was up. Times three. Because, of course, three people worked there.

He's obviously not mentally healthy, which just makes the whole thing sort of sad. I wish people like him could get the help for which they're so loudly crying out.

It is hereby resolved that Plaintiff Pearson shall be permanently enjoined now and forever, from filing any lawsuit of any kind in any court of any jurisdiction.

Shock I tell you! Absolute shock! I am dissappointed in you ATLers. Where are the obligatory "this is what happens when you have affirmative action" comments? Just when I had come to rely on ATL for the basest legal tabloid comments possible, you're proving me wrong!

I don't see a problem with the pants lawsuit. The way I see it, my pants house the most important part of my body. Once they're lost, I'm homeless. That's worth $54 million to me.

It is ridiculous that this case is going back for an appeal. It is a complete waste of time and tax payer money. It only shows that the American legal system is broken when it comes to frivolous suits like this and the greedy idiots like Roy Pearson who files them. I should file a suit against Roy Pearson for causing me mental anguish because this is driving me completely insane!

If I could just meet this Roy Pearson in person, I'd give him a real reason to sue...wait, he wouldn't be able to sue me when I got done with him.

He gives black people a bad name. He lives up to the stereotype of a money-grubbing, gold-tooth wearing, ni**a who would rather lose his job and try to make a vindictive point, no matter how stupid it is. This sick fool is the epitome of dumb.
