Update: Hasta La Vista, Marc Dann

Marc Dann.jpgHeads have been rolling in the Ohio AG office, after a series of problems with DUI, sexual harassment and ethics law violations. Several staff resigned and were fired earlier this month. And now it’s reached the level of the AG himself, Marc Dann.

From the Cleveland Plain-Dealer:

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann is expected to announce his resignation later today, The Plain Dealer has learned. He planned to break the news to his senior staff this afternoon.

The decision came as Dann faced intense pressure from fellow Democrats and Republican critics who said he was not fit to continue as the state’s top lawyer.

It also followed action targeting Dann in the Ohio General Assembly today by lawmakers from both parties. House Democrats this morning filed articles of impeachment against Dann, accusing him of misconduct and malfeasance in office. And House Republicans began plans to fast-track a bill that would allow the state Inspector General’s office to conduct an independent investigation into Dann’s office.

When the Democrats and Republicans are united against you, it’s definitely time to go. We guess they didn’t like his “I didn’t expect to actually get elected” excuse.

We saw the writing on the wall when Dann stepped down as Case Western Law School’s commencement speaker. They’ve since replaced him with Stephen C. Ellis, a partner with Tucker, Ellis, and West.

Update: Dann hasn’t resigned just yet, but we wouldn’t bet on his long-term survival.

Not so fast:

Apparently, Dann approached the House in secret and agreed to resign IF they agreed to stop the Inspector General from investigating his activities. Of course, they declined his terms, so he is refusing to leave.

His "I didn't expect to actually get elected" excuse made things much worse. The articles of impeachment include a count of gross neglect of duty. As proof, they quote Dann saying he is not qualified for his job.

Kash - you and lat should take a look at this Tucker Ellis & West shop. Their website does a pretty nice job of suggesting that they are a different sort of firm. Is there any meat to these claims? Do they not charge by the hour? Are the profitable? Should they be a model for the modern law firm, or at least an attractive merger candidate?

His office was just seized by the police in order to preserve evidence.
