Wedding Bells for Cass and Sam?
(And a digression on Obama cabinet picks.)

Cass Sunstein Samantha Power engaged ATL Above the Law blog.jpgHere is a juicy bit of gossip, about the complicated love lives of three leading legal / political thinkers. From a Harvard Law School alum who was a year ahead of celebrity professor Samantha Power (one of the world’s top 100 public intellectuals):

Cass Sunstein and Samantha Power are engaged, but apparently it’s all secret because Cass hasn’t told [his former paramour] Martha Nussbaum yet.

Well, it’s not a secret any more.

We reached out to both Professor Sunstein and Professor Power. Neither had any comment. If you happen to have more info, please email us.

The Sunstein-Power romance, as you may recall, blossomed when they were working for the Obama campaign. Now, of course, Senator Barack Obama is on the brink of securing the Democratic presidential nomination. If he wins the general election, expect both Sunstein and Power to land plum positions in the Obama administration.

How plum? Check out Garrett Graff’s fantastic piece about possible Obama cabinet picks, in the latest issue of Washingtonian magazine. Graff identifies Power, “the Pulitzer-winning human-rights researcher and author,” as a “wild card” on Obama’s foreign policy team.

Emphasis on “wild.” As Graff notes, Power “helped tutor Obama in foreign policy, but resigned after comments where she called Hillary Clinton a ‘monster.’” Graff suggests that Power “might take a leading role on the National Security Council or at the State Department or Pentagon.”

And what about Cass Sunstein? He’s not mentioned in the Washingtonian article, which focuses on Cabinet positions. But we could easily see Professor Sunstein, an authority on administrative law, snagging a seat on the prestigiously glistening D.C. Circuit — en route to a possible berth on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Expect these two to be the toast of the D.C. cocktail party circuit in 2009 — or, in the event of a John McCain victory, the most coveted company at Harvard faculty dinner parties.

Who Might Be on an Obama Cabinet? [Washingtonian]

Wow, unless those Bingham allegations are totally fabricated they have a major problem on their hands. What a bunch of idiots. How many allegations of that kind of behaviour does it take before you address them?

One of the great lucky breaks of the campaign thus far was that Power was canned from B.O.'s campaign after disparaging HillC. I would have much rather her had to stand up to critiques of her substantive policy stances.

Maybe I'm old fashioned because I remember communism, but what exactly makes Obama "hard left"? Last time I checked, he wasn't talking about nationalizing industries (well, unless you count health care) or quoting Marx.

And damn those eggheads, always curing diseases and inventing $#@!. Why does anyone listen to them?

Time to celebrate the eggheads for enforcing their morality upon the unruly masses and instituting unrealistic social policies upon people for whom they ostensibly speak. Yay, eggheads!

Obama: "And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. "

Marx: "religion is the opiate of the masses"

12:56 - The most leftie voting record in the Senate, a lifetime of associating with communist and other hard-lefties (His parents, William Ayres, Bernadine Dorrh, Jeremiah Wright, ACORN and his wife...), a policy platform that involves massive spending and the socialization of a huge industry (healthcare). There's nothing bipartisan in this guy's record or his policy proposals - it is just that he's not a dick to those he disagrees with (which is actually pretty cool and rare these days). Powers is a huge fan of the UN system and seeks to expand its powers, is strongly anti-Israel and could not even restrain herself from calling Clinton a "monster". While her positions are legitimate and I am sure she holds them sincerely, they put her on the left end of even the Democrat spectrum.

Also, after 8 years of Republican eggheads and think-tankers like Rice, Feith and Wolfowitz, I would very much like to see some more practical and experienced (and less ideological) people in the national security apparatus, regardless of who wins the top job. I don't want to replace the current pie-in-the-sky Bushies with their mirror image from the left - I don't think we could afford it.

1:24 when he writes an entire book whining about how he never knew his dad and wants to share his dreams? When most of his voluntary associations seem to follow the same pattern? Sure. Besides, aren't parents an influence?

"Last time I checked, he wasn't talking about nationalizing industries (well, unless you count health care) or quoting Marx."

Yes, he's not talking about nationalizing industries, except when he is talking about nationalizing industries. Very persuasive.

hey 1:13, some of us are actually excited about the prospect of a liberal presidential candidate who actually cares passionately about their ideas. after kerry and gore, it's a welcome change. and what's wrong with taxing the hell out of the rich? hasn't "trickle down" economics had it's opportunity to prove it's worth? looks to me like it's failed to improve the lives of the poor and middle class. i, for one, look forward to the radical change.

Hey 3:58 - Really, that's wonderful for you - I am also excited (though not in a good way) about the US economy becoming even more heavily regulated, about even more jobs and wealth moving overseas and about more layoffs in the legal and financial sectors. I assume you are a government-teat sucking swivel servant? Kerry and Gore were also liberals (though not total lefties like Obama) they just weren't nearly as charming - but then, what would I know, I'm just a typical white person, bitterly clinging to my god and my guns.

Oh, here's more to get excited about in an Obama administration - negotiations with Hamas! This is going to be AWESOME!
