ATL Round-up: Where the Lawyers Eat Out

Lunch.jpgOver the past few weeks, we've solicited recommendations for restaurants in various Biglaw cities. We've now compiled the lists of places where lawyers and summer associates like to wine and dine. We hope to help summer associates on lunch expense accounts find the hot spots. You'll find cities from coast to coast on the ATL lawyerly eats list, after the jump.

Sadly, we at ATL have not had the opportunity to visit all of these restaurants... yet. Next time we're in your town, we'd be happy to be taken out. Hint, hint.

in Philly, it's Good Dog, not Goodburger. they have good (i.e., the best) burgers at Good Dog.

Today, I ate at a Korean restaurant on Korean Way. Most of the eateries on that street are commendable.

You did Charlotte, Philly, and Portland (seriously, Portland? What do lawyers there make, 100k and all the birkenstocks you can wear?) but no SV/Palo Alto. Folks down in the valley don't hit the city for lunch.

"SV/Palo Alto"

Well there is no point, they all suck there too. Tamarine sucks and is overrated. So does Bistro Elan. Ditto for Fuki Sushi. Wolfgag Puck's Spago was ok but that closed down. A good cheap eat is the Alpine Inn (Zott's), but they are cash only so it's tough to use your firm credit card there.

Portland, Dallas, Seattle, Houston, Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte shouldn't even be on this list. Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Austin, and Charlotte are full of rednecks, while Portland and Seattles' populations are comprised of Birkenstock-wearing hippies. Is any law actually practiced in these cities?

Does no one care to opine about the author of this post in conjunction with the clever phrasing of its title? Cmon slackers....

Yes, we practice law in Seattle and Portland. Most of us actually get paid a lot more than you think with billable ranges from 1600-1800. I was working in Biglaw billing 2400 hours, but realized what a loser I had become.

Keep making fun of Portland. We hate the majority of the rest of the US and wish everyday we were Canadian.

Maybe you fogot that companies such as Nike and Intel are HQ'd in Oregon. People choose to live here to not have to work with the losers I find on this board.

Enjoy your rat infested hot smelly east coast city. I have a view of Mt. Hood from my office window and have hundreds of hiking trails within 15 minutes.

"At first it was a sort of underground stop for food and wine lovers who had heard word of small, fascinating restaurants run by young, talented chefs serving a bounty of local produce. It’s underground no more. Portland has emerged from its chrysalis as a full-fledged dining destination." - NY Times regarding Portland restaurant scene.

not bad for a bunch of hippies huh.

Those last 2 paragraphs really added something to your rant, 3:24/3:26. I'm not sure we would have been quite so devastated by envy had we not known about your stunning view of Mt. Hood and easy access to hiking trails.

Hiking trails? Awesome. Portland sounds like the ideal legal market...for a ten year old.

avatar
21 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, June 23, 2008 3:45 PM

what is a "Portland?"

avatar
22 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, June 23, 2008 3:46 PM

Portland is actually great for raising a family. I am REQUIRED to take a month off when my child is born as the managing partner of my firm said I need to develop a bond with him and not go down the road of being divorced.

Not to mention, having an LL.M. actually makes you valuable here where you'd be ordinary in NY. I get to work on major deals (normally out of Seattle).

Portland is the ideal legal market for people who desire a work-life balance. It is 73 degrees and sunny. We are an hour from the coast, an hour from Mt. Hood (also an hour from virtually year roudn skiing), 45 minutes to the Columbia Gorge to windsurf and boat, etc.

Not to mention, we have the best college football team and fans in the world. GO DUCKS!!!

. . . Before you make fun of UO, yes, the law school is not ranked high, but b/c I went to an Ivy League undergrad, it was no problem choosing my job upon graduation.

73 degrees and sunny? Yeah for like half the year if that. The other half is gray and miserable.

Portland? Maine or Oregon?

avatar
25 Posted by guest | Permalink Monday, June 23, 2008 3:52 PM

Fiar enough 3:48. The weather gets bad for 6 months, but we have literally 10 nonstop flights a day to Hawaii (all the islands), and we have the best "420" stash in the free world. Believe me, we still have a good time during rainy season. That is when we go on vacation . . . . . . .

You people need to stop talking up Portland. Like we're not deluged enough with Californians and New York transplants as it is.

avatar

Lot of hate for Portland. Especially given the fact that we're made up of people running away from California and New York. Lived in all three, you can keep LA and NY. We're happy here.

I am surprised that Star Provisions didn't make the list for cheap eats in Atlanta. I've eaten there several times and have never been disappointed. The meringues are an awesome treat to take back to the office as are the S'mores cupcakes.

Latty,

When are you going to understand that Silicon Valley is where most of the summers are, not SF? All of the corporate work is down here...and a lot of the litigation too. FWIW, next year you need to do a valley thread.

I've lived in 5 of these cities and these lists are simply terrible. How was this decided? I read these boards. Were the restaurants mentioned most simply reflexively chosen? I'd weep another tear for America's lemming-like tongue if my tear ducts hadn't been dried long ago.
