Biglaw Perk Watch: iPhones
Lawyers seem to cluster at two extremes when it comes to technology. Some are true tech geeks, who wet themselves over every shiny new gadget; others are technophobes, who are intimidated by two-sided printing.
After Apple unveiled the new iPhone yesterday, we received several emails from readers in the first camp. For example:
In light of Apple’s release of software making the iPhone compatible with corporate Microsoft Exchange servers, I think the iPhone merits a “Biglaw Perk Watch” post. Which firms are now allowing use of the iPhone? Which firms are paying for it?
Now that iPhones are compatible with Microsoft Exchange servers, perhaps Skadden will no longer frown upon lawyers spending their technology allowances on iPhones.
A second tipster tells us that at least one large law firm is jumping on the iPhone bandwagon:
Just watched the Apple keynote address today from MacWorld in San Francisco (watch it at apple.com). In the first 10 minutes, Steve Jobs shows a video about enterprise users adopting the new iPhone. Sonnenschein is one of three or four different companies they profile — including Genentech, Disney, and some army thing.Pretty cool! Looks like Sonnenschein will adopt iPhones! Are any other firms doing this?
Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal has been going through a rough patch lately. But if shiny new iPhones are on the way, things are looking up.
If you know about your firm’s policy with respect to the iPhone, please chime in, in the comments. Thanks.
P.S. We know of at least one Biglaw partner who is an iPhone fan: noted Supreme Court litigator Tom Goldstein, of Akin Gump. To find out what he keeps on his iPhone, click here.

unlikely to be first
will not support iPhones let alone pay for them - however, heard rumors of the new BB Bold being supplied
I am a summer and got a new BB Curve (raspberry color) in my welcome bag. Its awesome, I hope I can keep it when I leave. I showed it to all my family and friends over the weekend and they were quite impressed.
NO iPhone for You! My firm provides BB 8830s for every attorney and I'm pushing for support for iPhones when the new one comes out, but so far they're not convinced.
Sonnenschein probably paid for the iPhones with all that money it saved by laying off associates.
Moral? Associates are equally as fungible as iPhones in today's economy.
There is a rumor that Ropes & Gray, which has Apple as a client, will support iPhones on the Exchange servers. I don't think that means they'll supply them, but they do allow reimbursement for iPhones from associates' technology allowances.
iPhones are weak.
I thought that the Sonnenschein guy looked like kind of an ass in the (unfortunately high-res) video where he was droning on and on about Sonnenschein and iPhones. Great, who cares, you're getting 3G iPhones. Maybe if your partners were concerned about something important your law firm would be in better shape and not have such a bad reputation.
what better way to lift declining morale than with iPhones?
In high school, we used to get iPhones all the time. It was no big deal...
But a better question is why aren't you reporting on the lawyer on the Mole? We endured the Bachlorette posts...
Don't make Yolanda Young have to come over here... lol
12:03 -
Never attempt a Frat Stud post ever again.
Thanks,
The Management
I'll be pushing this at my firm hard. What you need is for one young-ish partner to get all covetous-like - once s/he gets it, the rest are golden.
Cravath associates are supplied with whatever they want. I know of one guy who has 5 blackberries and 3 iphones just because his "bet the business" transactions require so much of him.
When do they give out the oompa loompas?
12:12 - Never attempt to disparage the Frat Stud ever again.
Thanks,
Frat Stud
I read yesterday that the pirce of the orignal iPhone is expected to fall to $99, and that v2 will retail for $199.
Already got the iPhones at DSKBWG. West Coast has always been more progressive.
I'm with Management on the abortive "frat stud" comment at 12:03. Please turn in your credentials.
The real question is why would you want an iphone over a blackberry for work? Yeah they look cool, mobile web works great compared to blackberry, and its nice to be able to listen to your music, but they suck for typing. I don't know if the new iPhone will be improved at all, but I just can't imagine it being much better when the keypad is displayed on the screen the same way. Blackberrys are still better for the purpose they are here for, to receive and send email messages away from the office. The iPhones don't belong in corporate America just yet! Blackberrys will still own the market.
Fake Frat Stud is a Paul Hastings miscarriage of blog justice.
Guys in my high school used to try to appropriate my style of speaking and writing while making lame jokes (or non-jokes) all the time, it was no big deal. (It was just kind of annoying and unfunny.)

someone please do a JTlake post.
12:37p is right. Plus, with an iPhone, you're stuck on the sub-par AT&T network. With no signal, it's an expensive paperweight that doubtlessly ate up some other perq that you otherwise might have received.
11:36- very striver/douche-ish of you
What's a "perq"?
12:12 -- my thoughts exactly! There is ONE Frat Stud!
For 1:03(Gonzo) - 'perq' = a properly shortened 'perquisite'
BBs suck for web browsing, which makes depositions and train rides pretty boring. Opera Mini helps a lot, but it's still not an iPhone.
2L here, definitely submitting my resume at FRP to Sonnenschien
What is a "DSKBWG"? What an ugly draft line that would make: "DSKBWG Draft 6/10/08."
I enjoyed the Bachelorette posts. It's not like I have time to watch the show anyway. Lat, please continue them!
Our IT guy was receptive to iPhones pending v2 of the software. Seems to me the difference between BB and iPhone is whether you want to just send emails or be able to send emails, review documents/drafts, and have a practical tool on your hip for maps, picture taking, contacts, calendars, and basically a fully-functional Outlook with you.
blackberry are bringing out a touch screen phone that looks just like the iphone, http://gizmodo.com/389923/touchscreen-blackberry-thunder-coming-exclusively-to-verizon
is the touch keypad any better? the one thing i like about my blackberry is i can type very quickly on it - i only tried typing on the iphone once but it was slow / inaccurate.
12:37, you're joking, right? Those tiny ass BB keys suck compared to the touch screen keyboard.
4:36:
reading not your thing?
2:41,
I don't know what Blackberry you've been using, but mine pretty much has all of my Outlook functions right on the home screen with access to my Outlook mailbox and personal inbox. I can open attachments too, but cannot edit. The GPS would be nice.
Stupid discussion though. All mobile devices are just electronic shackles. IMO, they are even worse than having to put in face time at the office sometimes. For the summers who think its cool that they got one from the firm, come and talk to me a year after you start working. You won't think they are so cool anymore.
any firm that supports smartphones already will automatically support iphones because they both rely on the microsoft exchange server. if your firm syncs with the MS exchange server, you'll get firm email pushed to your iphone. the firm wouldn't need to do some special new thing to support iphones. my firm, and i assume most others, supports BB, Good, and MS Exchange/ActiveSync. I'm definitely getting a new iphone. I already use the internet more than I send emails from my current device. And it's not like I'm ever sending multiple-paragraph email memos or meet and confer correspondence from my handheld anyway. The no physical keypad thing doesn't bother me.
A reply to 1:38 PM: That's not true. Most firms use Blackberry Enterprise Server and/or GoodLink as an intermediary between their exchange server and the outside world. It's an added layer of security, and many firms will likely not open up their Exchange servers to the oustide internet.
