Boston Legal Services Office Vandalized by Celtics Fans

gbls.gifAfter the Boston Celtics emerged victorious in their match-up with the L.A. Lakers, Bostonites were thrilled. They had that kind of mad happiness that can veer off into loss of reason, then violence. Unfortunately, when the madness took over, a crowd of Celtic fans was in front of the offices of Greater Boston Legal Services.

From the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s news blog, The Docket:

Two days after the Boston Celtics grabbed the NBA championship for the first time in decades, and as jubilant fans were toasting the team at a victory parade, Robert A. Sable was walking on broken glass in the ruined offices of Greater Boston Legal Services.

GBLS’ offices, which are off Causeway Street near the TD Banknorth Garden, bore the brunt of one fan’s exuberance after the championship win. Now its newly renovated lobby is destroyed.

“We probably spent at least $300,000 [on the lobby],” says Sable, who is GBLS’ executive director. “We had brand-new windows, brand-new furniture and a really nice kids’ area.”

Ironically, the fans were trying to make their way to bars on “Friend Street.” Because the police had blocked off “Friend,” the crowd got angry. Here’s the video from YouTube:

"A national leader in poverty law, GBLS also undertakes representation and legal advocacy to address the root causes of poverty."

By spending $300,000 on a lobby to make the poor feel out of place? I hope they are just claiming it was that much to squeeze every dime out of the insurance.

While $300K may be a lot for lobby renovations at a poverty law clinic, that kind of spending demonstrates respect for their clients' dignity. Their clients may be poor, but they shouldn't treated (and made to feel) that they're charity cases the minute they walk into the clinic. Moreover, my guess is that the renovated facilities also instilled some sort of psychological benefit for clients, i.e., confidence that the clinic has the resources and willingness to be zealous advocates on their behalf.

Too bad the boorish Celtics fans took it away from them. Hope the cops catch 'em.

Next time you hear an obnoxious Red Sox fan, make sure you politely ask them this: "So, when did you guys become Yankees fans?"

Thank you for the well-reasoned, intellectual nature of your post.

In response: hasn't the GBLS been paying insurance premiums already? Isn't this the point of insurance, and how it operates? You seem to think that everyone should continue to pay premiums but never file a claim. Sounds like a great deal for the insurance companies!

Again, I'm not saying this is wonderful -- I'm saying I don't see why it deserves much more attention than, "wow, these people are asshats. Anyway, back to that story about the severed human feet washing up in British Columbia..."

12:04 -- I hear you. But NY fans' insults never really get too personal or confrontational, even if they sound very aggressive. Boston and Philly fans seem far more likely to start a fight.

And facts are facts -- since 1996, New York has seen 4 World Series wins, a Subway Series, 2 (or 3?) World Series losses, a Super Bowl win and a Super Bowl loss, and even some very good runs by the Knicks in the playoffs (seems so hard to believe that the Knicks were contenders in recent memory). Let's also add some of the most dramatic playoff game finishes in our lifetimes (the Boone HR against Boston; the walk-off HRs against Arizona in the WS), which sent NYC into euphoria. But with all those events, there's been virtually no violence, rioting or looting in NY.

Boston, on the other hand, has had problems at the end of every championship (win or lose), and sometimes during earlier playoff rounds too.

12:35 -- insurance premiums increase as a result of additional claims. Clearly, they should file the claim. But every act of stupidity like this committed by the Boston fans drives up insurance premiums for everyone, including GBLS.

If there was no negative consequence, then there would be little incentive for anyone to be careful. "Oh well, I can be as reckless as I want to be; insurance will cover it."

Never mind also that there will probably be some dispute between the bldg's insurer, the company's insurer, and possibly the city's insurer over coverage. That legal battle costs money, and that's really what drives up premiums.

Give it up.

There are tons of jackass fans across the country (and the world) and many of these jackass fans riot after championship victories or losses. The ribbing was good natured, and provided the target was willing to laugh a little and not get confrontational about some taunting, it all remained in good fun.

Destruction of property and offices is a big deal. It just is. You have destroyed property, and you have companies that can't operate fully until their front windows are replaced, their inventory is restocked, etc. In your world, this wouldn't have even made it into the newspaper.

I went to an Eagles/Tampa Bay playoff game several years ago (2002?). Drove up from DC and could not wait to get out of town after I witnessed the following:

Group of Bucs fans stuck in traffic trying to get out of the parking lot. They appeared sober and pretty aware of the fact that they should simply keep their heads down and get to safety before celebrating the big win. Not careful enough, I guess. Three Rocky wannabees spotted them and started rocking their car. Other Rockies joined in and pretty soon it appears that the car may be rolled. It's rolled and as the occupants scramble to get out, one of the Rockies throws something into the car that starts a fire. Due to post-game traffic, the fire department doesn't arrive for nearly 15 minutes. The Rockies have dispersed and the car is done. Philly fans are worse than anything in NY, Boston or Oakland, CA.

1:18, I' ve been to a few Yankees/Sox games in the Toilet, and there have been numerous fights in the upper deck each time. Actually, there are a shocking number of fights. Some could even be called brawls. I spent most of those games watching a line of cops run around those narrow isles.

There's so much rage on this thread. Most of you sound like the type of people who would throw signs through a window, based on your level of hostility towards Boston, sports fans, the Irish, and short people. It's a shame those guys broke the window, but it's no excuse for class-based, ethnic, and regional putdowns.

1:53: That's biting. That would be almost as bad as if the Celtics PA announcer had to rush through announcing Doc Rivers' name because of the inevitable hearty boo from the crowd, right?

And let's not forget the season opener at Yankee Stadium in 2005 when Yankees fans booed Mariano Rivera (coming off a rare postseason failure) and gave a standing ovation to Jason Giambi (coming off the disclosure that he was a juicer). Nice priorities, Yankees fans.

2:06 - A season ticket holder convinced me to stay home and watch. He's told me some pretty insane anecdotes, and they've been corroborated by other Raider fans. So no, I haven't.

I worked at GBLS while I was in law school. I'm sorry to hear that this happened.

I think it's a mistake to say it's a shame that a free legal clinic got vandalized. The real shame is that it happened at all, regardless of to whom. It's not like a senseless mob was specifically targeting legal aid.

And all this stuff about Boston being worse than other places is a bunch of baloney. I've lived a lot of different places, and there are knuckleheads everywhere that would've done this exact thing.

2:56 not that giambi was in any way right, however, at least he has some balls to own up. this is more than what big (wonder how he got like that) papi could show. and maybe shilling as well who (even with his age) all of a sudden has a broken body!

avatar
102 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, June 20, 2008 3:03 PM

2:50 -- you're easily shocked then. I've been to many, and I've seen fights, but they're not that common. And usually, it's cops running to take 1 jerk away, but not necessarily breaking up a fight. An important question, though, is whose fault was it? Do you have any idea how those "fights" you saw from across the stadium started? Clearly, there is a lot of taunting. But in every instance where I've seen the taunting escalate to more tension, it's because the target's response was beligerent and inflammatory.

Not saying the target has to just take it, but if your response is good-natured, you're fine. If you choose to provoke, you're asking for a fight. This is the case at sporting events the world over.

I don't get it. Why did they smash up the Gay, Bisexual & Lesbian Society of Greater Boston? Every Boston sports fan is a member by definition.

3:03, you're an idiot. Look at a picture of Big Papi in shorts and a t-shirt sometime. Look at a picture of Giambi back in the day. And did he "own up"? He gave a vague apology without saying what he was apologizing for. What an admirable guy.

You have no evidence on Papi. And I have no idea what your point is about Schilling. Are you saying that because he's broken down as a 41 year old that's evidence he's a juicer? Really?

avatar
105 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, June 20, 2008 3:17 PM

that is exactly my point on shilling. he was ok even with advancement of age until he had to stop roiding.
papi is (was) of course on the juice, look at his numbers this year

avatar
106 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, June 20, 2008 3:18 PM

3:03(2): I'm not easily shocked. But I'm talking 10+ fights in my area alone, some (though only rarely) involving 8-10 people. Of course there are others where you hear the roar of the crowd from across the stadium and spot the fight that way - those are fun. Maybe the few games I've gone to have been particularly violent, but I kind of doubt it.

And are you blaming fights on the "target"? How can you say that the "target's" response is "beligerent and inflammatory" without looking at the INSTIGATOR? Obviously it takes two to tango, but if you are saying that the "target" is more to blame than the instigator, you're crazy. And my point is that 1:10 is right. If I understand you, you're basically agreeing.

avatar
107 Posted by guest | Permalink Friday, June 20, 2008 3:25 PM

3:17: He's coming off offseason knee surgery, you idiot. His numbers haven't dropped off in the post-testing ERA. Track Papi's numbers against Giambis. Notice anything? Papis are great, Giambi's suck immediately after they start testing for real. Look at last year. Papi's OPS was the best of his career. How was Giambi? Terrible.

Also, remember when Giambi lost all that weight? Do you remember a similar loss from Papi? No, you don't. You know why?

5:46 -- assuming your number is correct, it doesn't tell us much. Boston also saw significant property damage. (See video and article above). Big difference between breaking stuff, and jumping around on cars (which happens just about everywhere). Also, this year's Boston incidents are relatively minor compared to other years. (See UMass fires and car-flipping, etc., from prior years).

Also, Boston is hardly a "major city." A "sizable town" is more like it.

This is probably not a Boston-only situation. Fans in other cities act like assholes when their teams win also. However, the attitude I see here regarding spending $300k on a building renovation is a little disappointing. I thought this was a website for lawyers, and in law school I was taught to reason and think. Consider this, the job was more than likely a union job, meaning they had to pay living wages to the men and women who did the work. These jobs pay anywhere from $30 to $40 an hour and the unions mandate how many workers are needed. They do good work, but it takes a serious investment to get the job done.

Bringing the building up to code and buying the glass and fixtures would also require a rather large capital outlay. Think about what goes into the job before you decide they have spent too much on it.

Also, think out the comments about how GBLS spent too much on a lobby for poor people. Those comments are beneath the dignity of the legal profession. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

white boys that fall in love with big black men that play sports are semi-gay. one time in college i was at a bar the school quarterback got drunk and started trying to fight people. little white boys from everywhere came out of the woodwork to hold him back he didn't hit anyone because "he had a future" . . . pathetic

Drunken fans generally are a problem. But GBLS, an organization I respect, seems to have overreacted. i mean, they rent the space so the windows would be the responsibility of the landlord. I can't see how much lobby damage could have been accomplished -- aside from the mess of glass.

No one is saying GBLS shouldn't pay living wages to the workers who constructed the lobby. The issue is whether the selection of the materials and furnishings was a bit "rich." And I find the comments about creating a nice environment for poor people to be off the mark, as well. The question isn't how clients feel in the environment, but whether the organization's funds would have been better spent on activities that would directly benefit those clients.

122 Posted by guest | Permalink Saturday, June 21, 2008 12:00 AM

all these people complainin about how much GBLS spent is stupid. Do you know how much it costs to renovate a commercial building? It's a lot. Little hole in the wall coffee shops cost like $150-200k to build and furnish. Construction workers get paid alot. Everybody gets their pound of flesh. $300,000 is a bargain for renovating a professional-type office.

Lawyers are so disconnected from reality its ridiculous. They just need to convince themselves that the $160k they make makes them better than others.

C'mon, they're just 'passionate' about their sports teams.

Sure Boston and Philly fans will tear the joint up if they win [or if you happen to be wearing a jersey from another team], but at least they don't leave in the 7th inning just because their team is 2 runs behind [baseball comparisons used since I don't watch basketball]

On behalf of Boston, we appreciate everyone's comments linking a few idiots' drunken actions to an entire city. We understand everyone's jealousy considering that Boston (a) is on the same biglaw pay scale as New "Yawk," (2) is cheaper to live in, (3) has more and better looking college women and is a less expensive, less pretentious and more fun social scene and (4) is dominating every major sport right now (come on Bruins, you're slacking). Add that to the fact that the city is much cleaner, less crime-ridden and on a whole better quality of life than in NYC, and we don't blame you one bit. Yes, we know the legal market is much more difficult to break into up here than NYC due to the wealth of top law schools, but you could always give it a try. Otherwise, please try to enjoy your $3000 studio apartment that reeks of city sewers and garbage and come up and visit at some point.

Also, I apologize to everyone who has been victimized by Boston roughnecks at city bars (apparently a big problem judging by this thread). It's not your fault that you have a big mouth, escalate fights, and then can't back it up (which we all know is a huge NYC trait). It's not your fault. It's not your fault.
