‘Lady Justice’ ATL Caption Contest: And The Winner Is…

Over 3500 votes are in, and the winner of the Lady Justice ATL caption contest is…
Lady Justice.jpg

After being screwed so much by the Bush administration, a doctor confirms that Lady Justice has become pregnant.

So what’s the story behind the photo? The man is not, as many of you thought, Roy Pearson of million-dollar pants fame.

The setting is the Shreveport federal court in Lousiana, and the man taking a moment to reflect is Caddo District Judge Michael Walker. Unfortunately, he and fellow judge Vernon Claville were not as intimate with Lady Justice as they should have been. They were convicted last month on racketeering charges. From the Shreveport Times:

Walker, who oversaw the drug section in Caddo District Court, and Claville, a juvenile judge, were convicted of racketeering charges stemming from a corruption investigation that began nearly five years ago. The government said the pair took cash payments from Travis McCullough, an informant, to lessen the cost for inmates to be released from jail.

Both judges have been sent to correctional facilities. But KSLA News reports that they will still receive state pensions when they “retire” on July 2. Good old Louisiana.

After reading so many ATL caption contest entries, I have confirmed that lawyers have no sense of humor.

Enough with this drivel. Let's get to the real meat we're all looking for: PORTSMOUTH SALARY POST, BEEYATCHES.

Next time, ask SEN for grammar advice before you crown a caption that makes no sense.

"After being screwed so much by the Bush administration, a doctor confirms that Lady Justice has become pregnant."

The part of the caption modifies "doctor," not Lady Justice. The wording makes it seem as if the doctor is getting screwed.

Doctors in my residency program used to get screwed by the Bush administration all the time, it was no big deal.

@3:05, that would be a good revision, but for some reason, the editors didn't revise the submission before putting it up for a vote. The silent hand of SEN at work behind the scenes perhaps?

I cannot believe that the caption with a misplaced modifier won. We're supposed to be good writers, people!

The order of ideas in the caption is arguably correct for the intended purpose, but the specific grammar, as has been repeatedly pointed out, is questionable at best.

Suggested modification:

"After having been screwed so much by the Bush administration, it is confirmed by a doctor that Lady Justice has become pregnant."

Further: (A) Substitute "repeatedly screwed" for "screwed so much". This saves a word and has greater effect. (B) Substitute the simple verb "conceived" for the awkward phrase "become pregnant". (C) Omit "by a doctor" as irrelevant. (D) Optionally, replace "being repeatedly screwed" with "repeated screwing".

Final edit: "After repeated screwing by the Bush administration, it is confirmed that Lady Justice has conceived."

4:23: Amazingly, you've not only failed to resolve the subject-object problem, but also added in a whole new problem of excessive use of passive voice. I can't tell if that was a serious attempt at an edit or if you're screwing around...

Lat, your dangling participle is humiliating. Please change immediately. you don't mean that the doctor was screwed.

Also, you refer to a "juvenile judge" -- come on. I was a juvenile judge when I summarily took my younger brothers' sodas. Capitalize!!

The supreme irony for those who wanted to take a shot at the Bush administration is that they voted for a caption that reads like something Bush himself could have said (except for the substance, of course).

But I suppose the guy who came up with the caption was just trying to put food on his family -- his nucular family, that is -- and we shouldn't misunderestimate him, etc.

I've appeared in Walker's courtroom. He is a pig who abused the lawyers and court staff. He used to tell women lawyers he would not allow them to wear pants in his courtroom (he liked to see legs).

I am glad he is headed to prison. Everyone in the courthouse knew he was shady. No one knew how stupid he really was, until the feds played the tapes in court.
