The Eyes of the Law: Scalia, J., Hearting Sex and the City

We wouldn’t have guessed this, in light of his social conservatism and the show’s risqué nature. But here it is, from New York Magazine’s Intelligencer:

Apparently Antonin Scalia is a Sex and the City fan. When Sarah Jessica Parker finished an interview with Charlie Rose on May 29, she left the Bloomberg Building, where the show is taped, and stopped for a cigarette in the courtyard. The conservative Supreme Court justice emerged from a nearby Town Car and rushed over to praise the star.

“He was absolutely gushing, telling her how much he loved her show and how excited he was to see the movie,” says a witness. “Finally, he asked her if he could bum a cigarette.” She obliged, the witness said, and then Scalia strolled away. A Supreme Court spokeswoman confirmed the meeting but denied the cadge. “He was there for a symposium,” she said. “And he lent her a match.”

Sarah Jessica Parker Carrie Bradshaw SJP SATC Antonin Scalia Justice Scalia.jpgWhat, no lighter? Supreme Court justices may be underpaid, but Justice Scalia, who recently reported assets between $1.5 million and $3 million, can surely afford a nice Dunhill.

On second thought, maybe chemistry between SJP and AS isn’t so surprising after all. Justice Scalia does look a little like “Mr. Big.” (Or, to put it another way, Chris Noth looks like a young Scalia.)

Over at the WSJ Law Blog, a commenter speculates: “That is a new low, a guy telling a woman how much he likes ‘Sex and the City’ in order to bum a cigarette from her. How many guys really like that HBO series? Not very many. Scalia must be a hard core nicotine addict.”

We know he's a fan of "24" (so reassuring when a Supreme Court Justice goes on record endorsing torture).

Apparently he's a fan of promiscuous sex as well.

I find it more surprising the Sarah Jessica Parker has any idea who Scalia is.

I wonder how he'll feel about the male nudity in the movie.

A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.

The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.

1:34(2): I'm sure he'll like it just fine. He might deny it, but he'll like it. It's obvious that he secretly craves the life of Samantha.

whats not surprising is that he likes Sex and the City. Good writing on that show.

What's surprising is that he didn't have SJP immediately burned at the stake for looking like the Wicked Witch of the West.

1:52 - Chris Noth is not exactly skinny. He will probably look a lot like Nino in 20 yrs.

2:29 -- How the hell is that a spoiler when the movie is rated R for, inter alia, "graphic nudity"?

You've got the wrong Law and Order cop. Compar AS with Paul Sovino a/k/a Det. Phil Cerreta

"Justice Scalia does look a little like "Mr. Big." (Or, to put it another way, Chris Noth looks like a young Scalia.)"

Are you kidding me? That is some deluded thinking.

I was Chris Noth's workout partner a few years ago at Barry's Bootcamp in Los Angeles. He took his shirt off on the treadmill, and I couldn't stop watching the way the loose skin on his face and torso would flop up and down as he ran.

"We wouldn't have guessed this, in light of his social conservatism and the show's risqué nature."

Hmmm. As Rochelle gurstein and others have demonstrated, the entire thesis of the show (missed on its trendy viewers) is that the sexual revolution was a complete failure for women and has left them with erratic and anxiety-filled lives of quiet depseration.

Remember when Samantha gets sick, knocks a curtain rod down, and needs help getting it back up. So, she starts calling all the different one-night-stands she has been with and even though she goes through an enormous number of them, not one of them cares enough about her to come over and help.

That's free love, no attachments for you baby! A lonely depraved existence.

I don't agree with 4:20 about the nature of the show. I think that the show is about being single--something we all go through--for varying lengths of time and about negotiating relationships. It makes it more interesting for these women to have many relationships, because there is more we can learn.

But the show's biggest contribution was that it really opened up the floodgates and let women talk about sex. Since something like 10-15% of women who are sexually active have not yet had an orgasm, and something like one in six will experience vaginismus at some point in their lives, getting rid of the shame and talking openly about the pros and cons of various forms of sexual expressions is really helpful to many women.

Plus, I disagree that things are so dire for the women. Samantha chooses to be single (mostly, although she has her share of serious relationships earlier in the show, and at the end with Smith) but the other three manage to find more than one pretty decent partner. Charlotte has Trey and her 2nd husband (Trey, despite his flaws, can be a pretty awesome guy even though they never should have married), Miranda has Steve and that gorgeous doctor, along with a few other decent prospects, Carrie has Aidan and Big (who straightens up and flies right) and for a brief while, Berger, who seemed really great.

The show was pretty much trash for trash, though the writing could be, at times, smart. Sarah Jessica Parker is the ugliest woman married to a gay man this side of Broadway - actually, she's the ugliest woman PERIOD. Nothing I like more than fatties and witches trying to convince me she's attractive - because nothing shy of news that her gaze reverses aging and cures gout would make me want to look at her.

Her name is Sarah Jeesica Parker??!! I feel like an ass. This whole time I thought her name was Ruth Buzzi. Wow! I just thought she looked really good for her age. My bust.

Nor do I need her to be, 12:14. Truth be told, the only thing I need her to be is outside of my line of sight.
